A Body Beside

When you walk along an empty lane
in the middle of the night
when the wind blows softly with a chill
and the owls hoot in distant mires,
a body beside is indelibly great.
There is warmth in passing together
between rows of dark cylinders and boxes,
and there is joy and ease in hearing
tap                   tock                tap
        tock                   tap                tock
with every step under the stars.
When you walk along an empty lane
in the middle of the night
with a body beside to share the ride,
there is no labyrinth too twisted
nor hill too steep nor road too rough
because the path of companionship
carries you through the night.
