Those Four Little Words

Those four little words I told you
You took to be so true
And gave so much more meaning, too,
Than I ever meant to.

Those four little words whispered nice
Sounded so good in the middle of the night
Like cold, cool ice
In the middle of summer's heated vice.

Those four little words I spoke after you
Were the lifeboats you held on to
When the deep, gusty winds blew
And left you colored in blue.

Those four little words of might
Cost such a high price
When you think of them every night
And use them as your shining light.

Those four little words were never true
But remember what they meant to you
And keep the strength they provided, too,
Even though I never really loved you...
