Spinning Around

Rachel's POV:
I woke up way earlier than I intended to that morning. I turned off my alarm clock and got out of bed. "Why did I have to wake up this early on a school day." I groaned
I sat upright and groaned again as my vision went blurry and the room spun, I clutched onto the sides of my bed. Once the room had stopped spinning sufficiently for me to safely get out of bed, I carefully held onto the cabinet next to my bed and swung around into my wheelchair and unlocked the brakes and wheeled across the room and out into the hallway, Mam was advancing down the hallway ready to get us up for school "Well I am shocked Rachel, usually you are the last one up in the mornings" She laughed
I spun my chair around and carefully backed into the bathroom. I locked the brakes and carefully moved onto the stool that was in front of the sink, I adjusted Dad's shaving mirror so it was height appropriate and started washing my face with my new lemon scented face wash , I patted my face dry and applied a thin layer of moisturizer before starting my makeup, i applied a shimmery pink eye- shadow and black eyeliner on my waterline. I covered up any dark circles and spots with concealer and foundation, then I finished off with setting powder and setting spray , I pocketed a lipstick called Lily Pink for later. I brushed my teeth and combed out my hair, I tied it back into a high ponytail leaving it to curl naturally at the ends, I wheeled back into my room and pulled on my uniform, I pulled on thick tights complete with skirt , shirt , cardigan and blazer.
Mam dropped us to school that morning and I waited for my friends in the Canteen. I finished off a piece of homework I started last night, "Hey Rachel. Good weekend?" Rosie walked in and sat down next to me "Whatcha working on?" She asked
"An essay for English, it's about A christmas carol. I'm stuck on the conclusion, you're good at English help me please?" I begged
"Fine. Let me see what you've written so far" She pulled my notepad across the table and studied it intently
She explained what to do and i got it written down. "Can you believe that Friday's sleepover marks a year since your first sleepover?" I remarked whilst scribbling in my jotter
"God I can't believe I've still only been here a year. I definitely feel like I've been here for longer, have you got all your stuff ready for Friday, it's at my house to mark my anniversary remember" She said
"Tell me about it. Of course I've got everything packed, your house is way better than ours, you live right by the beach. I'm so jealous even if it does take you an hour to get to and from school everyday" I laughed
"Oh my god" Rosie gasped
"What's the matter?" I asked
"My room is a loft conversion. How are you going to manage to get up there?" She asked
"Don't worry I get my cast off tomorrow. There's a way around everything Rosie don't worry" I laughed "Come on , it's almost form time we'd better go so we can beat the rush" I wheeled backwards and in one swift movement I backed out of the door 
"And this is where I come in" Rosie chuckled and helped me bump down the step
"Eurgh. I've got double Welsh today" Lindz groaned as she came into class
"Well that's why you should have picked Drama or Media with the rest of us" I giggled
"Don't look so smug. Future employers prefer you to have a modern foreign language qualification" She retorted
"Alright settle down you lot. Lindsay take a seat please, Rosie the last time I checked tables were not for sitting on and Rachel stop doing whatever it is your doing, you're already in a plaster cast we don't want you in a full body cast" Our form teacher ordered
"How was your weekend, Miss?" I asked cheerfully
"It was enjoyable thank you Rachel, although i did have the misfortune of marking all of your Media homeworks" She replied
"That was harsh Miss, you know that you love marking our work" I laughed

Alicia's POV:
"Who decided to say the Q word. I don't think i've sat down since I started my shift this morning" I took a swig of water and picked up another patient file
"Right" Dr Woods took the patient file out of my hands and pushed me in the direction of the staffroom "Go and take your break. You need to remember you are 28 weeks pregnant Alicia and you're still recovering from a serious accident, when it gets this busy come and find one of us to take over from you. You're entitled to a 30 minute break every 4 and a half hours and you should take advantage of that now you're getting further into your pregnancy" She tutted and I went into the staffroom.
I made myself a decaf vanilla coffee and sat down scrolling through my phone. I hadn't been sitting down for 10 minutes when Adam, one of the junior doctors came rushing in "Doctor Hardy, I'm sorry to disturb you but you're needed on the ward. Dr Woods is busy dealing with the influx of patients from the ED, Dr Kent has taken the young girl with burns off for treatment, so there's only me and you left on the ward and we've had several new admissions - A 15 year old girl who had a severe allergic reaction at school she's been sent up from the ED- Dr Woods has just admitted her and about 6 children from an explosion at a school trip campsite" He said breathlessly
I jumped up "Right, first of all go and get Dr Woods from Admissions and then page Dr Kent from the treatment room. Me and the nurses can handle this for now" I sped out onto the ward "Right, Nurse Johnson would you be able to see that the Children from the explosion are dealt with, Most of their injuries would have been dealt with in the ED. We'll have to use the day unit to cope with the overflow for now, I'll deal with the allergic reaction patient" I took patient files from the porters and matched them to patients.
Soon the day unit was filled with patients, we had Jessica and Lee in for dialysis and a 10 year old who had been sent to us from Rheumatology for IV bone phosphate infusions because apparently they weren't equipped to deal with paediatric patients. So on top of the 6 explosion patients the ward was filled to capacity, I instructed the porter as to where to put the allergic reaction patient I walked over "My name is Dr Hardy and i'll be your doctor whilst your here" I said whilst looking at the notes , I looked up at the patient and saw that she was fairly young. A flustered woman came rushing onto the ward who I could only assume was Mum, I walked over to her calmly "i take it your Mum?" and she nodded "Right, can you tell me what she ate to cause this reaction?"
"She was at a friend's house. She ate peanut butter - I've never let her have it before because her brother is severely allergic to nuts but her friend's mum let them have peanut butter cookies. She only ate half of one before she had the reaction, I wasn't there at the time but her friend's mum said she started to itch and then her face came up in hives and then her face started to swell" She explained
"Right well her friend's mum did the right thing by calling an ambulance. She's being given antihistamines and cortisone  through a drip to help with the swelling and we're giving her oxygen and salbutamol to help with her breathing" I explained "She'll be referred to an allergy clinic as i'm sure you know from your son , we'll keep her here for 24 hours to make sure Biphasic anaphylaxis doesn't occur, she'll be discharged with 2 epipens and you'll need to make a follow up appointment to see your GP. If you want to stay the night with her we do have a parents room unless you need to get back to your son?" I asked
"No No his father is with him. I'll go and get her some overnight clothes and I'll ring our GP and explain what's happened" she said and rushed off
I went back over to the little girl "My name is Dr Hardy and I'm going to be your doctor whilst you are here. I promise everyone is really nice here" I let her choose a sticker from the sheet I kept in my pocket.
One of the girls hopped over "Hi I'm Ellie. I'm in here loads and Dr Hardy is definitely one of the best doctors in here . I wish you were my doctor Dr Hardy" She pouted and I laughed
"Aw shucks Ellie. Ellie this is Ella I'll leave you two to get acquainted" I said and walked off. I went into the locker room and saw that my phone was buzzing
I picked it up and answered "Fran What's up?" My mind automatically tried to work out what had happened to Rachel for Fran to call me
Fran's voice shook as she spoke "Rachel... she fainted but then she had a seizure and she dislocated her shoulder as she collapsed. The school office have called an ambulance and they're checking her over now but I couldn't get through to Connie or Jacob but I think the secretary has called one of them" She told me
"Okay Fran. Can you put one of the paramedics on for me?" I instructed
She passed the phone to one of the paramedics "Alicia it's Ruby. Rachel's still unconscious so we can't tell if she's got any form of concussion, we've managed to reduce her shoulder but it took a few attempts as it appears that she's very stretchy - does she have any form of connective tissue disorders?" She asked
"Not that we're aware of. She does have an appointment to see a rheumatologist because of her joint pain because our GP suspected Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder or Ehlers Danlos, she has Ménière's disease but you're thinking something else aren't you"
"It's like you can read my mind Alicia, usually with Ménière's she should have come round by now. She's had a seizure before and they've ruled out epilepsy but maybe you should consider something like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia syndrome, her heart rate was 185 when we arrived and her BP was on the floor" Ruby said talking a million miles a minute as per usual
"Thanks Ruby I'll get Mam to call our GP later on. I'll see you soon" I said and she passed me back to Fran
"Fran I know this is frightening for you and I understand that completely but Rachel is going to need a familiar face when she wakes up so tell Ruby I've given you permission to go in the ambulance with her" I instructed her
I came off the phone and hurried down to the ED leaving a hurried message with Keely. "Alicia!" Mam hurried over to me
"I've spoken with Ruby, apparently her pulse rate was through the roof when they arrived and her blood pressure was really low. She thinks Ménière's isn't the sole cause of her dizziness" As I said that I could see the cogs turning in Mam's  head
"So she's thinking maybe it's a form of dysautonomia?" She said and we walked into her office
"She thinks it could be PoTs. We'd have to speak to the GP to get a referral to cardiology and maybe call her ENT consultant and see what he thinks as well best to cover all grounds" I sat down and rubbed my bump
"You shouldn't have left your shift. Those children rely on you up there Alicia" Mam chastised probably her way of coping with the fact that Rachel was being brought in
"Mam do me a favour. Stop panicking. She's in the best hands and she's going to be fine. Where's Dad anyway I thought you were both working today" I asked
"He got caught up in resus he's been in there all morning working on a case. I think I'll call the GP now to put my mind at ease" She tapped away at her phone and pulled up the correct number "Hello, I'd like to get an appointment with the doctor please to talk about my daughter"
