OwO, could it be that I finally did another request update? Haha, yes I have! This was adopted by Ocean_aqua 10, and I just gotta say this came out much better than I hoped. Also this may be a little triggering 'cause there's a theme of depression in here but there's no self-harm or anything! Anyway! We should prolly get onto the oneshot now! Hope you peeps enjoy ^-^

"Hey Kuni~"
"Hello In'ei-(Y/N), what do you want this time?" You almost choked on the yogurt you were eating as you saw your shadow attachment leaning on Kunikida's desk in a flirting manner as Kunikida continued his work nonchalantly.

"Did you sit in sugar recently?" Your shadow counterpart asked.

"No, why do you ask?"
"Because you've got a sweet ass, too bad it's in that chair all day, want to change that~" In'ei purred, leaning towards Kunikida. Kunikida's face became red in what you assumed was anger as he looked up at you.

"(Y/N)..." Kunikida growled.
"Yeah? What's up?"
"For the one hundred and sixty eigth time, control In'ei. They're distracting me from my work."
"Sorry!"
"Oooh sixty eight, one more and we'll reach that special number-~"

"Get back here!" You actually tugged on the shadow bond between you and In'ei, making them yelp in surprise as they landed on their butt by the side of your desk chair.

"Ow! You're so mean (Y/N)!" Your shadow complained as they rubbed their butt.

"Maybe Kuni can kiss it and make it better, will you do that for me Kuni~?"

"Absolutely not!"

"Shut up" you hissed at In'ei, trying to keep your blush down before going back to your yogurt and glancing at the clock.

"It's only been one hour and I've already upset you Kuni, is there any way I can make it up to you~?" In'ei asked seductively, going behind his chair and unashamedly running their hands up and down his chest.

"(Y/N)..." Kunikida growled again angrily as he practically smashed his computer keys.

"I'm sorry! Really! You know I can't control them that well!" An irk mark appeared on his head but he still continued to work despite In'ei's advances.

"In'ei-(Y/N) seems really into Kunikida today, I wonder if there's a reason for that." Ranpo smirked, making you jump.

"We need to put a bell on you."
"Whatever, so, you got any candy?" Ranpo grinned mischieviously.
"I just watched you eat like, 36 bars of candy, you're going to develop diabetes at this rate."
"Yeah, but it'd sure be a shame if everyone knew why In'ei acts the way they do, wouldn't it?" Ranpo leaned in at a whisper as you groaned, Ranpo was the only one who knew your absolutely private secret, you looked back at In'ei, who Kunikida seemed to pacify their advances with allowing them to braid his hair. In'ei was exposed to your innermost thoughts and feelings, but didn't have as big of a filter like you, they were more like the id of your personality. Acting upon impulses and having no self-control, and because of these impulses, they were consistently flirting with your crush of at least two years, Kunikida. Only Ranpo was able to figure it out, everyone in the agency didn't understand or couldn't figure out why In'ei acted they way they did, and nobody knew Ranpo figured it out. But to keep your little secret, you had to buy his silence with the candy and other treats you kept in one of your desk drawers. You sighed, if everyone knew about In'ei's true source of their actions there was no doubt you would be treated as an outsider, even in the agency and Kunikida wouldn't be your friend any more.

"Fine, just don't touch the chocolate bars."
"Sweet, I think I'll try this one, thanks (Y/N)!" Ranpo grinned as he skipped off with his prize, you sighed and picked up your yogurt again as you began to eat once more as you cringed at In'ei.

"Hey Dazai?"
"Hmm?"

"Can you use your ability on me?"
"Sorry, no can do, we have a lot of cases today and who knows if you're needed. If it's the end of the day then maybe but right now...no dice." You sighed at Dazai's answer, well at least it makes sense this time...at least it isn't his usual-

"Plus I like watching Kunikada suffer like this."
There it is.

"I really wish you learned to control your ability one of these days (Y/N), In'ei's interruptions are keeping me from my work, now I'm two minutes behind schedule." Kunikida told you, but your eyes crept up to his hair before your cheeks puffed up and your shoulders shook, focusing on his hair.

"That's a...that's quite the hairstyle you got there Kunikida..." Dazai's expression and movements matched yours as he also tried to hold in his laughter. An irk mark grew on Kunikida's forehead, at your expressions.
"I did his hair in two plaited braids, isn't it cute? You look really hot like that Kuni! But then again you'd look hot in any style you wear" In'ei complimented him excitedly.

"Whatever, but if I wear my hair like this will you be quiet for the rest of the day?"
"Of course Kuni, I'd do anything for you~" In'ei sighed dreamily, swooning onto your desk dramatically.

"Good, now if you excuse me I have things I have to do." In'ei flipped over so they were resting on their stomach on your desk, resting their chin on their palm as they kicked their feet back and forth.

"It's such a heartache to see him go...but I love watching that back work on his way out and that ass, mmm, it looks sweeter than chocolate..." In'ei sighed dreamily.

"I gotta agree, if I wasn't already looking for a beautiful woman to do a double-suicide then perhaps I would've asked Kunikida, but he probably would say no..." both their comments made your face turn pink, well...they both weren't wrong about that exactly...When Kunikada left their sight, In'ei sighed and rolled off your desk.

"I miss him already...hey! Can I have some candy?" In'ei asked, immedietly getting up.

"You can't eat food, remember?"
"Yeah, but you can! Have some candy! You know you want it!" In'ei tried to convince you, but you shook your head.

"No thanks, I have this yogurt, which is just as good as candy." You answered, In'ei pouted.

"No it isn't, candy is so much better!"

"Dazai can you please use your ability on me?" Dazai shook his head.

"Like I said, it's the beginning of the day, besides you'll probably have a mission to do."

"Uuuggghhh" you groaned, not knowing how you didn't decide to kill yourself over your shadow, wait- scratch that, if Dazai knew you thought that he'd ask you non-stop if you wanted to commit a double-suicide with him.

"Please (Y/N)? Just a little bit? For me?" In'ei asked you, you shook your head.
"Oh I get it! You're helping me maintain a slim figure so I can seduce Kuni! That's so nice of you!" In'ei hugged you, making you stiffen, you still weren't used to physical affection. Even from In'ei you still weren't used to it, but from Kunikida...

"I'm sorry! I know I can't control what happens but I'm...I'm so sorry!" You cried, it was one of the few times you stayed conscious enough to see the aftermath of what you did after you lost control. You were in a warehouse, where a small group of defected specialized ops tried to kidnap and get ransom from their hostage, but you forgot who the hostage was. You just remember them in the corner, about as horrified as you were at what you did. Kunikida looked around, the moonlight shining on his glasses and making his expression unreadable, you lowered your head, waiting for your punishment.

"I...I'm sorry..." you apologized again, your fists tightened as they shook, your tears cascaded like waterfalls. You thought you've come so far, you thought you were finally making progress in your ability. Kunikida stepped towards you as you closed your eyes, bracing for whatever would happen, but instead you got pulled into warmth and your eyes snapped open instinctively.

"Your ability is a hard one to control, especially when you're angry or upset...you took down the kidnappers and kept the hostage safe and that's what's important. With time you'll learn to control your ability." Your eyes watered with newfound tears as you grasped his waistcoat, slowly realizing that he pulled you into a hug.

"You...you really think so?" You asked, Kunikada nodded.

"I do," more sobs shook your body as you cried out, trying to press yourself closer and closer to Kunikida, not because of what you did, but because Kunikida saw what you did, and believed you could become better.

The only physical affection you recieved was from Kunikida, after missions when he would comfort you after the rare times you saw what you did and/or when you came to and he told you what happened. And even though his hugs meant that you did something bad or lost control, his hugs were the best to you. He hugged you tight, but not tight enough to keep you from moving and they were warm, unlike In'ei's hugs.

"Y...yeah...no problem In'ei, always happy to help out." You smiled sheepishly.

"I'm gonna go see if Kuni's noticed that we've slimmed down! I'll be right back!" She grinned as she ran to find wherever Kunikida went, but was met with disappointment as she snapped back towards you.
"Aww man! He's too far away! (Y/N), can't you get up and move closer to where Kuni is?" In'ei questioned you as you basketball shot your finished yogurt into the nearby trashcan as you turned back to your computer.

"Can't, I have to do paperwork."
"I hate it when you have to do paperwork, it means I can't see my Kuni." In'ei pouted, sitting cross-legged as she crossed her arms over her chest, not even bothering to argue as she sensed your resolve.

-Timeskip-

"Thank you for this information, the Agency will use it wisely. I wish you a safe trip back to your precinct" Fukazawa walked the police officer out, everyone except for Kunikida looked up from their desks to watch.
"Y...yes sir! Thank you!" The police officer saluted.

Huh, that's kinda weird, must be new to the force....why would they send a new guy to the Agency? To get him used to us maybe? You wondered to yourself as In'ei was busy doodling with markers onto construction paper on the floor like a child. The President watched the police officer leave before turning to the agency members.

"Dazai, Kunikida, (Y/N), Atsushi, come to my office as soon as you possibly can." Fukazawa spoke to you, a sense of dread filled your stomach as you slowly got up.

"Oooohhh! Is it a mission! I really hope it is! Everything's been so boring around here!" In'ei grinned excitedly, but your limbs felt like iron. You looked to your side to see Kunikida, who just gave you a curt nod as you entered the office.

Atushi and Dazai entered after, Atsushi standing next to you and Dazai standing next to Kunikida.

"I'm glad that you're all here, now, let's get down to business. Normally, I only send 2-3 man squads for missions, but in this case I believe the larger the numbers the better."

"Is there a reason for this case sir?" Kunikida asked, Fukazawa nodded, sliding a picture across his desk.

"I believe you remember this man, they called him the Mimic for his ability allows him to copy others abilities. You and Dazai know him especially well." Kunikida picked up the photo.
"Yes, I remember him. His ability was a tough one to beat."

"Hm? Who is he? I don't remember..." Dazai shrugged as Kunikida grew an irk mark.
"Seriously?! This guy canceled out your ability and broke almost all your ribs! You had to get five treatments because of him!"

"Really? I don't remember..."
"You're hopeless..." Kunikida facepalmed before turning his attention back to Fukazawa, "I see why you want (Y/N) and Atsushi accompany us. This man already knows our abilities and may have come up with counter-measures against them." Fukazawa nodded.

"Exactly, if the element of surprise is available we must use it to the fullest. Any advantage we have we must exploit, especially for an enemy such as this one." You shifted your weight to your other foot as you began to nervously play with your fingers, with In'ei behind you raving about how cool it would be to fight, but you, you didn't think it was cool.

My ability...it isn't so much about strategy and more about charging in recklessly...if our President believes that this is a formidable enemy then why the hell am I part of this mission? Someone like Yosano or Kenji would be better, right?

Sensing your unease, Kunikida turned to you, putting his hand on your shoulder. Not used to the surprise contact, you looked up at him as he gave you a small smile.

"You'll be fine (Y/N). Me, Dazai and Atsushi have your back." You nodded, not saying a word as In'ei continued to talk about how cool the mission will be.

-Timeskip-

"Are you sure this is the place Dazai?" Kunikida questioned your bandaged friend, Dazai nodded as he closed the door of the car that Kunikida drove.

"Yes, I'm sure of it."
"You better be, or else Ranpo's next snack run is coming from your wages."
"Ouch, so harsh Kunikida."
"An abandoned building? Seems like the perfect place for a hideout." Atsushi observed, as you nodded.

"Yeah, but I think this one's scheduled for demolition..." you trailed off nervously.

The perfect place for a trap...

"Well at least out here you won't have anything to destroy and feel bad about later (Y/N)!" Dazai pointed out cheerfully, but you glared at him, unamused.

"Come on Dazai! Why do you have so little faith in me?! Honestly, you cause more destruction than I do sometimes." In'ei pouted.
"Doubtful-"
"Dammit Dazai! You're not helping the situation!" Kunikida smacked Dazai over the head with his book.

"Uh...Dazai...is (Y/N)'s ability really that dangerous?" Atsushi asked quietly as Dazai rubbed the bump over his head.

"Unfortunately, yes. What makes it worse is that she can't quite control it. So she can't really go on a lot of missions like the rest of us." You lowered your head as you heard Dazai's words, not that it wasn't true but it still hurt.

"That isn't true! We do just fine on missions! You'll see Atsushi! You'll all see!"

No...they won't...I'll just lose control like I always do...

"You should have more faith in (Y/N), Dazai. She may just surprise you."
"I didn't say that I didn't have faith in her, I just said that her ability is complicated, besides, I'm just trying to lighten the mood." Dazai sweat-dropped as Kunikida held up his book threateningly.

"Dazai..."

"Hey guys, shouldn't the guy we're looking for be somewhere around here?" Atsushi asked as he looked around the deserted ground floor.

"Huh? Well this is a multi-level building, he's probably hiding on one of the higher levels." Dazai answered nonchalantly as Kunikida stood behind him, book in hand. You hesitantly took a step forward as you looked around, at least one good thing came from your ability, you could see really well in the dark.
"Yeah, I don't see anyone hiding around-"
Crack!

You looked down mid-sentence to see two cracks in the stone floor under you as the building shook.

"(Y/N)!" Kunikida tackled you to the floor before a partition quickly formed, separating you from Dazai and Atsushi.

"You should really be more careful. Are you ok?" Kunikida asked you, you nodded.

"Yeah...thank you, how about you?" You asked as Kunikida got off from on top of you and stood up.
"I'm fine, but at least now we know we're in the right place." He offered you his hand and you took it as he pulled you up.
"Yeah...I guess that's true."
"Heh, looks like I got the cream of the crop. Didn't think I would get this lucky, Kunikida." Mimic came from the shadows, a grin stretched on his face, "now I get to get you back for locking me up. And maybe after I'll have some fun with your girl." An uncomfortable shiver went up your spine as you hugged yourself.

Creepy!

"Don't you even think about touching (Y/....N)?" As soon as Kunikida grabbed his notebook something shot through his side, you heard the uncomfortable scrape against bone as a rock shot out from his back.

"Kunikida!" You yelled in horror as he dropped to his knees, trying to cover the wound but the blood wouldn't stop pouring out.

"I'm fine (Y/N)! I can still fight!" Kunikida tried to stand but immediately cried out in pain as he got back on his knees, his shoulders shaking from both pain and effort. You could hear his hacking as he began to cough out blood onto the cold stone of the floor.

N...no....

You could only stare in horror at Kunikida's suffering, your body was frozen.

"Like my ability? It's really something, I'm sure you remember it. I copied my new partner's ability, it's easier like that you see."

It...it was so fast...how could he? How could he be so cruel? Kunikida's suffering and it's all his fault!

You turned to the man in front of you, In'ei was now becoming a sticky substance that coated your back as your heart pounded with adrenaline in your ears.

Ba-dum!

He hurt Kuni! He needs to pay in blood!

Ba-dum!

He shouldn't hurt anyone like this again!

Ba-dum!

Make him pay! Make him suffer!

Ba-dum!

The line between your thoughts and In'ei's was fading, your anger and infuriation was blending together just like the sticky substance on your back was spreading.

Ba-dum!

"You think that scares me girl? If Kunikida didn't stand a chance then I doubt you do too."

Ba-dum!
"(Y/N)! Run! I can take him! G...get out of here...before...before you get hurt too! Agh!" Kunikida tried to get up again but he could barely even stand for a few seconds.

Ba-dum!

He needs to pay!

Break all his bones!
He won't ever hurt anyone ever again if he's dead!

Ba-dum!

Your eyes changed from their calm (E/C) to an unnatural red, the stickiness on your back reached to the end of your limbs and mouth, forming into claws and fangs. Some spread to your chest and abdomen, protecting your vital organs.

"Funny, I was about to say the same thing." Your smile was unnatural, making Mimic take a step back as your voice was altered, a blended mix of your voice and In'ei's.

"(Y...Y/N)..." was all Kunikida could manage before you let out a terrifying roar.

"I'll make you wish you just rolled over and died!" You roared, the black mass on your back was also a monster, mimicking Aktugawa's Rashoumon as you launched yourself at Mimic. The fight was fierce from the start, you weren't holding back, not even a little as Mimic was struggling to keep up with his ability. He kept throwing stones at you that you either caught or deflected. Meanwhile Kunikida was on the floor, starting to become pale as he reached for his slightly bloody notebook.

D...dammit...

You roared as you struck a wall of rock Mimic put up at the last second.

Dammit...

Kunikida's bloodied hand turned to a blank page in his notebook.

Dammit!

You were losing control, he knew you were if he couldn't interfere somehow he very well knew that Mimic would end up dying by your hands. If he bled out here, if he ended up dying, then he wouldn't be able to bring you back from your current state, you'll keep rampaging and killing until your own body gives out in exhaustion. He couldn't let that happen, not to anyone and especially not to you.

"D...doppo Poet...b...bandages..." Kunikida ripped out the page where the characters for 'bandages' were written in his own blood. Green letters surrounded the page before it became a roll of bandages. Kunikida began to sloppily self-treat himself as he wrapped the bandages around his torso, trying to tight them tight enough to stop himself from loosing any more blood.

"Now you die!" Mimic was now bloody and beaten, covering the bone sticking out of his arm as he bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from screaming in agony as multiple black spikes were being prepared to be shot at him from In'ei's body, at least, until you felt something wet and sticky on your cheek as Kunikida's face overtook your view.

"(Y...Y/N)...it's...it's me, Kunikida, can you...can you see me?" He asked you gently with a smile, tears pricking his eyes as he could feel the last of his strength sapping away from getting over to you so quickly. Behind him, Mimic passed out from both shock and pain, but your focus was entirely on Kunikida now.
"K...Kuni?" You let out a pained cry, two voices still as one as his free hand cupped your other cheek.

"I...I'm here (Y/N), now please, come back to me...you know I wouldn't ever leave you...you should have more faith in your superior..."

"K...Kunikida?" Your voice was now your own, your claws and fangs dulling, the bright red in your eyes fading.

"I...it's me (Y/N), I'm right here. Come back so we can go home." Kunikida was fighting to stay awake, he had to bring you back, to fully bring you back. To the point where you didn't have claws or fangs, where your (E/C) eyes were soft and beautiful like they always were. You leaned into his touch as In'ei's black armor began to retreat into your skin, your claws and fangs were no more, but your eyes still had a reddish tint.

"H...home?"
"Yes home," Kunikida began to focus on that, distracting himself from the sharp pain in his abdomen and the heaviness of his eyelids.

"The Armed Detective Agency is your home, and we are your family. Don't you ever forget that." When you opened your eyes again, they were fully (E/C) before they rolled into your head, body faltering as you collapsed onto the floor.

S...she's back...thank God...

Kunikida could feel himself slipping away, he didn't have much time left before he himself passed out.

"(Y/....Y/...N)" Kunikida could barely even manage a step before he faltered, crashing next to you, he reached out to you, resting his hand on your shoulder before finally allowing himself to drift off into unconsciousness.

"Honestly, you two. If you're going to sleep together, at least do it in a bed and not on the cold floor like that, you look ridiculous." Dazai critizied as Atsushi looked around the room. Blood streaked the walls and floor as their real target remained unconscious.

"Uh...Dazai...what should we do about this?"
"You take (Y/N) and Kunikida outside, I'll watch the targets and call our President to let him know that we completed the job successfully." Dazai answered cheerily as Atsushi sweat-dropped.

Of course that's his instructions, I should've known...
-Timeskip-

Kunikida groaned as he awoke from the bed in the infirmary, his head pounded, either from the fall he took or the lack of hydration to replenish the blood he lost.

"(Y/N)!" Kunikida hopped out of bed as he remembered the state you were in and swept open the curtain to check the bed next to him. Lo and behold, there you were, sleeping peacefully, it was almost perfect, except for the sticky note on your forehead. Kunikida gently took it off as to not wake you as he looked to see what it said.

'Kunikida's Ideal Woman

Dazai'

An irk mark grew on Kunikida's forehead as he immediately began to crumple up the note and threw it into the nearby trash can.

"Dammit Dazai..." he growled to himself before quietly pulling up a chair. Once he sat in the said chair, he opened his notebook, flipping to the exact page he wanted.

'My Ideal Woman

(Y/N) (L/N)'

"I hate it when you're right..." he muttered as he looked through the list of things he already had about you, smiling a little at the memories he gained this information from.

"K...Kunikida...?" You called weakly, he immediately shut his book and looked up at you.
"It's me (Y/N), how are you feeling?"
"I...I'm better, thank you." You rolled over so you were on your side facing Kunikida, he got up and walked over feeling your forehead. You were a little clammy, but you were always like that after you used your ability.

"It seems like there's nothing out of the ordinary."

"What about you? You aren't still hurt are you?" You asked sleepily, In'ei was just a little black ghost draping off the side of the bed.

"I'm fine, I vaguely remember Yosano giving me some treatment. So I'm fully healed."

"T...that's good," you yawned, "when I'm more up to it can we uh...can we go out for some Boba Tea? Please?" Kunikida decided to entertain your request as he pulled out his notebook and flipped it to his schedule.

"I suppose my schedule will allow it. But that's only if you get some rest." Kunikida told you sternly, you nodded.

"M'kay..." you whispered as you allowed your eyes to droop closed. Kunikida watched the rise and fall of your chest, as you drifted off into a deep sleep. It was only then did he carefully adjust your blanket so you were getting the maximum amount of warmth. Then, he quickly looked around, making sure no one was there before dipping down to place a gentle kiss on your forehead.

"Sleep well (Y/N)." Kunikida wished you in a hushed tone, as he spoke you rolled over, lightly gripping his sleeve in your sleep. Kunikida smiled at the endearing action as he gently removed your hand.

"I can't today, there's still a lot to get done," Kunikida placed your hand by your face before going to brush away some stray hairs, the soft look in his eye all to prominent as he gazed upon you, "but perhaps someday-"
"Why don't you just confess to her already?"

"Dazai!?" Not expecting someone (especially not this bandaged idiot) to be right next to him Kunikida let out the biggest shriek anyone's ever heard. Immediately after though, he clamped his hands over his mouth and looked over at you to find your sleep totally undisturbed by his sudden outburst.

"What are you doing here?!" Kunikida hissed angrily as Dazai casually ate some popcorn.

"You do know that she likes you, right?"
"No she doesn't, you're lying, this is one of your tricks isn't it?" Kunikida questioned defensively, pointing an accusatory finger at Dazai, though his blush was more than obvious.

"Well if you like her so much, why don't you just ask her out?" Dazai asked, a mischievous look in his eye, but it changed to intrigue when Kunikida's face suddenly became somber, hands at his sides.

"...the closer I get to (Y/N), the more likely In'ei takes over her whenever I get hurt and in turn that hurts her. I'm not going to cut myself from her life, but she needs to focus on herself right now and gain control over her ability. Her losing control on missions because I'm injured can't keep happening. It'll...it'll kill her someday...and...and I don't know what I'd do if that happened." Kunikida clenched his fists as he bit his lower lip, just even imagining you dead because of him was heart-shattering. Dazai did a once-over of Kunikida, analyzing his body languages and other signs that he picked up from his line of work.

"I call B.S." Dazai spoke casually, continuing to eat his popcorn as if he didn't even have a care in the world.

"What?!"
"Aww man, I'm out." Dazai looked inside the popcorn container as if more would instantaneously appear, "but you know it's true Kunikida, you're just looking for an excuse to not start dating her 'cause you're afraid you'll get hurt again later on. Even Atsushi could see that."
"What? Did you guys say my name?" Atsushi peeked his head through the door.
"Ah! Atsushi! Perfect timing! Can you throw this out for me?" Dazai asked, throwing the popcorn container at Atsushi.
"Me?! What!? But I-"
"Thank you! I'll pay you back later! I promise!" Dazai grinned at him as he slowly closed the door, leaving Atsushi to sigh as he went to go find somewhere to throw out Dazai's trash.

"Ok, now before I leave, let me ask you something Kunikida," Dazai still faced the door as he spoke, "have you ever thought why In'ei-(Y/N) makes all those romantic advances on you?" Before Kunikida could answer Dazai left, shutting the door behind him. Kunikida sighed, running a hand through his hair, looking at you one last time before leaving as well.

I can't...not yet...it's just not the right time...

"Are you sure you don't want some tea Kunikida?" You asked as you slowly sipped yours, as you had your legs crossed on the bench. However, Kunikida was staring out at the water in front of you and the colorful lights of the boats that were either docking or leaving the port.

"No, I don't really like eating things after dinner."
"Ohhhh, right, I forgot about that. Do you want some of mine then?" You asked, holding out your drink, Kunikida glanced at the drink before quickly looking away as he pushed up his glasses, grateful that you couldn't see his blush in the darkness of the night.

"N...no, that's fine, don't worry about it."
"Ok..." you mumbled, not disappointedly but in a more tired maner. Kunikida glanced at you from the corner of his eye, taking in your features that were illuminated by the street lamp next to you.

Have you ever thought of why In'ei-(Y/N) makes all those romantic advances on you? Kunikida's eyes went down to the slightly larger shadow puppet that was drooping over the side of the bench, swinging with the wind lifelessly. His gaze went back up to you as he began to think. He wondered what it felt like, to be completely drained and immobilized after just one use of an ability, surely he was at a point similar to that once, but now he couldn't even recall such a time. He found himself wondering once again if there was some way to help you gain control, but he could find no answers, your ability was too dangerous to practice with, even in the woods if you gave In'ei even a little control there was a chance you could lose yourself forever and that was one thought even Kunikida couldn't even bare to think about. Kunikida's mind snapped himself from his thoughts, not wanting to explore any further, only to immediately notice the goosebumps on your arms.

"Here, you're still weak from earlier." Kunikida spoke with a light blush, taking off his jacket and draping it over your shoulders. Your free hand gripped it, pulling the jacket tighter around yourself as you looked up at Kunikida with a small smile.
"Thanks Kunikida, but you didn't have to."

"W...well...you're a member of the Agency, and we take care of our own, don't think anything of it alright?!" He questioned the last part harshly, drawing the attention of some passerby as Kunikida desperately tried to conceal the blush on his face. Your smile just widened a little as you took another sip of your drink.

"Alright Kunikida, whatever you say," your smile faded soon after as you leaned against the bench, looking out at the pier in front of you.

"That guy...is he dead?" Kunikida sighed at your question as he readjusted his position so he too was facing the pier.

"Don't worry, he's in stable condition at the hospital, though Dazai's there now to make sure he or his partner don't pull anything, so you have nothing to worry about." You tilted your head back as you tried to make out the stars above through the leaves above you and light pollution around you.

"That's a relief to hear."

Kunikida glanced at you as you looked upon the sky above you.

This would be the perfect time to confess a little voice in his head whispered.

No, it's not I-

You're just looking for an excuse to not start dating her 'cause you're afraid you'll get hurt again later on Kunikida remembered Dazai's words in the middle of his denial, his hands in his lap tightened at the memory.

No...that's not true, she really does need to focus on herself, I can't deter her from what she needs to do...

"The pier is really nice tonight, isn't it?" You asked, looking back to the pier after having given up your search for stars. Kunikida quickly snapped his head towards the pier so you didn't catch him staring as he re-examined the pier.

"Yes, it really is." He spoke matter-of-factly as he pushed up his glasses, as he stole a quick glance at you.

-Timeskip-

You typed into your phone as you plopped yourself on the couch, enjoying your day off from the Armed Detective Agency.

(Y/N):
What's up?

Dazai:

Nothing much, just thinkin' abt throwing myself in the river again, dunno. How 'bout u?

(Y/N):

Don't u have those two Gifteds to watch?

...Dazai?

Hello?

Did u srsly forget?

You could feel the panic building up inside you as you typed text after text, you wondered if this was some kind of prank, Dazai was just messing with you, right? Maybe he actually forgot that he was supposed to watch those two?

Did something bad happen? It was all my fault! Let's not jump to conclusions now! There's probably a really good explanation as to why he hasn't responded-

Interrupting your flood of negative thoughts was the next text from Dazai, you quickly read over it.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The fourth time you put your hand over your mouth as tears pricked the corner of your eyes.

Dazai:
There's no easy way to say this, so I'm just going to say it outright. The ability user me and Atsushi fought has already been transferred to prison. The one you and Kunikida fought...died earlier today. His heart just gave out.

As you went to reread the text the fifth time you hid your phone under one of your couch pillows as you gripped the other one tightly, hoping that if you couldn't see it then it wasn't true. But you could feel it, even under the pillow you could feel the crushing truth of what you've done.

I'm a killer! How can someone like me ever be in the Agency? I don't deserve this life! I don't deserve any of it! I'm only good for death and pain! Is that the only path I can take?! I hate this! I hate this so much!

You ran to your save haven, your room, and shut the door as you began to hyperventilate. In'ei became a cloud of smoke around you, whispering negative thoughts that only you could hear. You clamped your eyes shut and put your hand over your ears, but that didn't stop In'ei relaying things that you secretly thought about yourself, you already knew that yelling over In'ei's voice would only make them louder.

"S...stop...please...i...it's not like I meant to..."

But I am an extension of your being, I only do what you want, you wanted to kill him. You wanted to feel his blood on your claws and see the terror in his eyes. That was all on you, you wanted those things so you are the monster.

In'ei's gaseous form got bigger and bigger, swallowing the room into a black abyss as you were left, alone with only your thoughts, all your thoughts.

-Meanwhile-

Kunikida's phone rang, sighing when he saw that it was Dazai's contact but picking it up anyway.

"Hello?" He asked tiredly, already imagining the slew of troublesome things that Dazai got himself into.

"Hey Kunikida...so uh...(Y/N) heard the news about Mimic dying this morning, from someone, not naming names but-"
"Dazai! What the hell did you do that for?! How could you possibly be more of an idiot?!" Kunikida roared into the phone as everyone in the Agency continued their work.

"Sorry but she asked and I didn't want to leave her questioning whether or not he was actually dead. That probably would've been worse!" Dazai argued back.

"And how exactly did she come to ask about his condition?" Kunikida asked through clenched teeth as Dazai went silent.

"..."
"I knew it."
"My silence was not an admission of guilt!"
"Dammit Dazai!"
"Ok so we don't know how she asked but you should probably go over there, she might freak out like, a lot."

"This is not over! Next time I see you you'll be an inch from death, understand?!" Kunikida yelled into the phone before hanging up, uttering curses under his breath as he swiftly packed away his stuff.

"Yosano, tell the President that I have to go to (Y/N)'s and I'll make up my work tomorrow. I'm sure he'll know why!" Kunikida called, Yosano nodded.

"Of course, I'll try to do what I can, just make sure (Y/N) is alright."
"I will." The two exchanged a brief nod as Kunikida shut the door, taking the steps two at a time in his urgency.

Just hold on (Y/N)! I'm coming! I promise I am!

-Timeskip-

Kunikida, despite his urgency, slowly closed the door to your apartment. He looked around as he carefully called your name before noticing the black smoke under your bedroom door.

It's worse than I thought...

He reached for the door knob, only to find that it was locked.

"(Y/N)? Are you in here?" Kunikida called, meanwhile you were on the other side of the door, choking on whimpers and silent tears as you somehow found the energy to move from the floor to the bed.

He doesn't actually care about you, he only cares that you don't flatten Yokohama with your power.

"L...leave me alone..." you called out weakly, your voice shaking as you tried not to betray your emotions.

"It's me (Y/N), it's alright."
All they care about is your power, without it, you are nothing to them. You're they're rabid dog that they only unleash on the worst of foes.

"It's not alright! When will I ever learn Kunikida?! When will I ever learn to control this ability and not let it control me?! Everyone else has it all figured out except for me! All I'm able to do is maim and kill! I'm no better than Aktugawa from the Port Mafia!" You yelled, the black smoke only becoming denser as tears relentlessly poured out of your eyes, blurring the darkness in front of you. Kunikida's eyes widened before he tightly gripped the door handle, his stance changing into one that was similar for when he would attack, but instead of his notebook his hand was tightly balled into a fist.

"That's not true! You're better than him! Better than all of them!" He yelled, how could you believe this was true? How could you regard yourself in such a way?

He's just saying that, to calm you down, to tame you until the next time you're needed to kill

"How?! How am I better!?" Kunikida practically slammed his head against the door, his head unballing to become flat on the wooden texture. He took in a deep breath as he had to remind himself that he shouldn't have yelled like that, and because he did even more black smoke was coming out from the door under him.

"The Port Mafia intends to kill when they fight," he spoke, his voice in a much calmer tone despite how he was angry that you felt like this, and it made him desperate to change the light you saw yourself in,"you don't. Don't stoop yourself down to their level."

Like any of them hold you in a high regard, they all see you as a tool to gain more power in this city, why do you think the government hasn't stopped you yet? They're afraid, they're all afraid, too afraid to speak the truth about you.

"Shut up! It's true, you know it is!" You yelled as you choked on a sob, "don't lie to me!"

Dammit! Kunikida could only feel the anger and desperation growing, but he wouldn't let it get into his voice, or body language, doing so would only make you feel worse.

"(Y/N), please, will you let me in?" He asked gently.

"No, leave me alone!" You cried as the tears just wouldn't stop. Kunikida took a step back from the door, his head lowered as his shoulders shook, hands balled into fists.
"I'll go make some tea." He spoke, but you didn't respond. Kunikida's movements felt almost robotic to him as he prepared the warm drink that you loved so much. That was, until the kettle started boiling as he was left with his own anger and powerlessness in this situation, and as it reached it's boiling point, he couldn't take it any more.

"Dammit!" He hissed, punching the counter next to the kettle, his voice muffled by it's high-pitched cry. Kunikida, shut off the overn and took the kettle, pouring it's contents into two different mugs. He walked back carefully with the two mugs, careful not to spill it's contents as he put one in front of the door.

"I made you some tea, if you won't talk to me then at least have a drink."
Please just take it...I want to help you in some way... he thought as he heard nothing from the other side, but slowly, he could hear you climb off the bed and you opened the door, quickly grabbing the warm beverage and closing the door before Kunikida could register the action and only black swirls of smoke were left from your actions. He sighed, sitting with his back facing the door, as he slowly sipped his tea. Normally he liked the taste of tea, but today it only tasted bitter on his tongue as he could tell you were in the same position against the door he was in. It was dead silent and it was only until the bitter drink was gone from his cup did something permeate the silence.

"Kunikida...do you ever think I'll be able to control my ability? I...I don't want to rely on others forever. I want to be able to use my ability without the worry that I'll destroy Yokohama, but if I give my shadow self even a little more control it completely takes over and well...I hate it. I don't want it to be like this for the rest of my life. I really don't." You whimpered, your voice breaking every once in a while and only added to the cracks in Kunikida's heart, he lowered his head once more as he contemplated what you said.

"You won't. You may not always be in control but you always do the best that you can. Controlling your ability fully will come with time and experience. And even if the whole world thinks you're a monster I'll still help you however I can. I promise I will." Kunikida felt the door shift, immediately straightening as he saw your small, bloodshot eye peeking out from the doorway.

"Do you really mean it?" Kunikida put his mug down, not even daring to break his eye contact with you as he scooted closer, nodding only once.

"Yes, I do." You left the crack in the door, but didn't close it, meaning that it was Kunikida's silent invitation to come in. While the smoke had thinned out a little it was still prominent in your room, you had curled up in the bed with the pillow you stole from your couch in your arms. Kunikida couldn't help the twinge in his heart as he slowly sat on the bed and pulled you so you could rest on his lap, you let go of the pillow as your arms encircled his waist as you buried your head into his torso. He gently stroked your hair in the way he knew you liked it as his heart clenched every time he saw the tear stains on your cheeks. He couldn't hear what In'ei was saying to you, but you once told him that whenever you were in this state it was a constant stream of negative thoughts, he counter-acted this by whispering sweet nothings as he busied his other hand with stroking your back. Well, one would call them sweet nothings, but Kunikida meant every word he said to you, they weren't nothing to him, but everything. The dark cloud that veiled your room was beginning to decrease in size and density, but whenever it looked like it was about to increase, he would tell you something he deemed special about you or a favorite memory, anything but his feelings for you to make the cloud shrink, to make you feel better.

When the cloud was fully gone, Kunikida found you asleep, he sighed, wishing that he could do more than this temporary fix, wishing that this didn't become such a routine to him, however genuine his words were. Most of all, he wished that you didn't think about yourself like this, ever. Even if it meant that all you knew each other as was co-workers and your bond wasn't as deep as it was. Even if it meant that you didn't need him, even if it meant that In'ei didn't flirt with him, even if you didn't go out for beverages or snacks after missions, he would forsake all of this if it meant that you would never feel like this, in a heart beat he would make that trade. Even if it wasn't his decision to make, call him selfish for this act but he would do it. Kunikida gently moved your's and his position on the bed, folding his glasses onto the nightstand before holding you protectively in his arms, he moved a stray hair from your cheek, the tips of his fingers lightly touching your skin for longer than necessary before he kissed your forehead.

"Sweet Dreams...(Y/N)..." he whispered, gazing lovingly at your peaceful features before pulling you just a little closer as he closed his eyes, fully prepared to comfort you in the middle of the night if you needed him to.

-Timeskip-

You awoke to the soft morning sunlight peeking through the drapes, as a familiar warmth enveloped you. You didn't have to look far to realize that Kunikida held you in his arms, you buried your face in his chest as you both tried to go back to sleep and listen to his heartbeat while you could.

"(Y/N)..." Kunikida muttered, you looked up, ready to ask him what was wrong only to find that his eyes were still closed. He subconsciously pulled you closer to him as he uttered your name again.

Is he...is he dreaming? Why is he dreaming about me? It isn't something weird is it?

These questions danced in your head as your cheek was basically pressed to his chest from how closely he held you.

Just try not to think about it, just try not to think about it, just try not to think about it...

You repeated to yourself as you closed your eyes in an effort to go back to sleep.

"Ngh, what time is it?" You looked back up to see Kunikida's golden irises as he looked around, the mistiness of sleep in his eyes.

"I...I dunno...probably ten?" You guessed as Kunikida retracted one of his arms from your figure to check his wristwatch.

"Close, nine thirty. Sorry I stayed the night, but I didn't think it was wise to leave you alone. Are you feeling any better?" Kunikida asked, abandoning you for a moment to grab his glasses off the nightstand so he could see you before looking to you for an answer.

"Uh...y...yeah..." you answered sheepishly, unable to meet his eye. Kunikida smiled and brushed some hair away from your face.

"That's good" he then got off the bed as he began to stretch, "we're still late to work. Though the President understands why we're tardy so I suppose we can take things slow this morning. That being said, do you feel like pancakes?" Kunikida asked you, you nodded as you hopped off the bed.

"Yes please!" Kunikida chuckled at your eagerness as you both went into the kitchen.

"What kind of pancakes are you feeling like today?" Kunikida asked as he took out the ingredients, you thought for a moment as you located the tools you would need.

"Uhh...does regular with an ungodly amount of syrup sound good?" You asked sheepishly, Kunikida smiled.

"Of course, I had a feeling you would say that anyway." And with that, you got into the daily morning ritual of making pancakes, the two of you already knowing the jobs that were needed to be done as this had occurred many times before.

-Timeskip-

"Alright, it looks like that's the last one."
"Hurry up! They look really good!" You protested as Kunikida put the bowl and pan in the sink with a little dish soap and water inside to let them soak.

"You don't have to wait until I get to the table, you know you can just eat without me right?"
"Yeah, but it isn't fair that you're a better pancake flipper than I am, and besides, it would be rude to eat without everyone at the table."

"I agree but if you're starting to get hangry then I would rather you eat instead of waiting for me." Kunikida spoke as he finally sat on the chair across from you in your little table, he used his fork and knife to grab one pancake as you began to take four of them.

"Yeah...but it's always the way we've done things, why would I ever want that to change?" You smiled as you began to pour an ungodly amount of syrup onto your pancakes. Kunikida's face fell a little as he looked up at you.

Because...then you'll be in control of your ability and episodes like what happened last night won't ever happen again, because you won't be hurting like you are...

"Hey! What are you doing?! You're going to get diabetes at that rate!" Kunikida was snapped out of his thoughts by how much syrup you were putting on your pancakes.

"Shuddup, this is how I like my pancakes and you know it. Besides, I did say an ungodly amount of syrup..." You muttered as you put the syrup bottle down and began to eat your pancakes. Kunikida sighed as he just put a little bit of syrup in the corner of his plate.

I wonder what he was dreaming about, and why was I in it? You wondered as you watched Kunikida, his brows furrowed as he mentally calculated a healthy serving of syrup.

(Y/N) needs to focus on herself, but she also needs me by her side, what should I do? This is so confusing....

Kunikida imagined a chibi-version of himself going up to Dazai

"Hey Dazai, I have a favor to ask." Chibi-Dazai turned around in his chair.

"Hm? What is it?"
"I really like (Y/N), but she needs to focus on herself and improve her ability. But she also needs me by her side to control her ability."
"Why! The answer's so simple Kunikida! I'm surprised that you haven't figured it out!" Chibi-Dazai grinned as Chibi-Kunikida had his notebook open and ready to take notes.

"Just date her!"

"Yes but-"

Chibi-Yosano at that moment came around the corner with an angry look in her eye and a chainsaw.
"Are you insane?! Just ask her out already you coward!!!!"

"Wow, looks like you're in a maple syrup mood too huh?" You commented, snapping Kunikida out of his daydream.

Crap! I put in an extra thirty mililiters!

"Say what you want, but I fully intended on this amount." Kunikida spoke as he neatly cut his pancake.

Perhaps...the President may know the answer to my predicament...

Kunikida thought as he began to eat his pancake, yes, President Fukazawa would know exactly what Kunikida should do in such a predicament.

I wish we could make pancakes all the time together...not just when I have an episode because of my own mistakes...Kunikida's really something...putting up with me like this when he probably has better things to do with his time...how many times has he helped me like this? I've honestly lost count

You couldn't help stare at Kunikida with admiration, though there was an underlying sadness in your eye at how much of a burden you must be to him, having to rely on him all the time. But at the same time, you couldn't help but wonder if he liked the time he spent with you, he would've snapped at you in the past if he was annoyed, right?

"What? Do I have something on my face?" Kunikida questioned, making you straighten and focus your attention back to your pancake as you tried to keep down the bright pink blush.

"No, you're fine, I was just zoning out, that's all!" You defended yourself.

"I see, were you thinking about anything in particular?"

You, and how much you mean to me and I hope that our bond isn't one-sided because I really enjoy the time we spend together and I really want to hang out and make pancakes for no other reason than to make pancakes but it only seems to happen when I'm depressed and holy crap I think I'm much more in love with you than I thought...

"I just...I wanted to thank you for taking care of me, even when I said that I didn't need you here. I feel a lot better now than I did last night."
"It wasn't a problem, I would have done it for you any time. You needed me so I came through to help you, anyone at the Agency would have done it." Kunikida spoke professionally as he pushed up his glasses.

"Yeah, alright, let's finish up. We shouldn't completely miss the whole day." You smiled as you began to eat again.

...why do I have a feeling that because I'm in love with you it's different than if it were someone else...

-Timeskip-

"President Fukazawa do you have a moment?" Kunikida asked as he opened the door.

"Yes, I suppose I can spare a moment. Is there something wrong Kunikida?" Fukazawa beckoned Kunikida to take a seat, curious as to what was troubling the young man since little troubled him.

"Yes Sir, something has been troubling me for a long time and I don't know who else to turn to. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on my predicament." Fukazawa leaned back in his chair and nodded his head once.

"Yes, of course. What is this predicament that you're in?"

"...there's no easy way to say this...but I think I'm in love with (Y/N), and I don't know if I should tell her how I feel or to leave our relationship as is."

"It is hard for (Y/N) to control her ability, even with mine helping her, I don't see any issues with pursuing your affections."

"But sir, she needs to focus on herself and improve upon her ability."
"I suppose that is true, perhaps you should wait then."
"But she needs me in order to control her ability."

I don't understand what he wants from me...

Fukazawa took a moment to craft a response in his head before speaking aloud.

"If you deem yourself to be a distraction or not, as an outsider to your inner conflict, it is clear to me that (Y/N) needs you as much as you need her. I do not know if this bond will run as deep as the bond of lovers but it is definitely a possibility worth exploring. You may not even need a label to define the type of bong you have, but remember, you aren't a distraction and this is (Y/N)'s decision as well. Confess to her however you wish and work something out if she likes you back but agrees that she needs to focus on herself."

"Yes sir, thank you for your time, and your advice."
"Anytime Kunikida."

-Meanwhile-

You walked past the President's office as you were trying to find Dazai to try to get him to do his work, but you found all the clerks gathered in front of the President's door.

"What's up you guys?! What's going on?! Did some hot police officer come to drop off files?" In'ei asked, making all the clerks jump as you sighed.

"Sorry, In'ei just came back this morning at work. But what is going on?"
"N...nothing! Later!" They all shouted synchroniously as they booked it down the hallway.

"Do you have any idea what's going on?" You asked In'ei, who shook their head.

"No clue."

Just then, the door caught your attention as it opened with Kunikida leaving the office, seemingly startled that you and In'ei were there.

"O...oh! (Y/N)! How are you today?" Kunikida asked with a small blush on his face as he kept himself from meeting your gaze.

Kunikida...but why were they listening in on a conversation between Kunikida and Mr. Fukazawa? Gossip maybe?

"Better, thanks, how about you?"
"Kuni-!" In'ei went to go hug Kunikida but before she could even finish her sentence she poofed away.

"...that's weird...could it be that you're finally maintaining control over your ability?" Kunikida asked as you both looked at where In'ei used to be.

"Maybe...? Dunno yet, this is the first time it ever happened."
"Alright, keep up the good work then." Kunikida ruffled your hair as he walked past with a small smile on his face. He glanced at you one last time before going past the corner.

She may not need me anymore...

Kunikida thought as he stopped in his tracks, lowering his head. It's not that he wasn't happy that you were mastering your ability, in fact he was ecstatic, but there was a small part of him that felt a little proud that he was needed, however he knew that you were taking a step in the right direction. Even if it was at the cost of having pancakes with you in the morning.

-Timeskip-

"I just don't get it. I really don't understand how In'ei could just disappear like that. Do you really think I'm mastering my ability or am I still recovering from a few days ago? I honestly can't tell anymore..." you sighed as you spun in the spinny chair Yosano had in the infirmary. Yosano looked from you to In'ei who was on the floor messing with some low-tier medical equipment, like the cotton balls.

"Do you think that maybe your ability is linked to the self-acceptance of your thoughts and feelings?" Yosano observed.

"What?"
"You said that you realized that you love Kunikida this morning right?"
"Yeah...if I told Dazai this stuff he'd probably lock us in a closet or something..." you pouted.

"So, since you accepted your feelings for him fully instead of thinking it was something to be ashamed about, In'ei disappeared when she went to flirt with him, right?"
"I guess..."

"Then you just need to accept all of your thoughts and feelings the same way. This is just a guess, but it's worth looking into, wouldn't you agree?"
"I suppose that makes sense, Yosano, you're almost as smart as Ranpo is, I have no idea how I saw this earlier! Thank you for coming to that conclusion!" You got up energetically before running out the door, In'ei grabbing fistfuls of cottonballs before being forcefully dragged after you.
"It's not an official conclusion! It's just an observation!" Yosano called before sighing, a small smile on her face.

That girl...she always works so hard, it would be nice to see all of her hard work paying off...

-Timeskip-

"Maybe...no...that won't work...what about...no, too flashy...dammit! That wouldn't work either!...but maybe if I..."
"Whatcha doin'?" Dazai asked cheerily, making Kunikida jump as he also tried to cover the writing in his notebook.

"Nothing!"
"Hm? Could it be? You're finally going to confess to (Y/N)?! About time! Though what's with all this planning?"

"Could you be any louder! What if she hears you?!" Kunikida hissed as Dazai waved his hand.

"Nah, she's not gonna hear us."
"And how do you know?"
"Because I know, anyway, since you've been in love with her for so long, surely you've at least thought of a few good places to confess when you went out with her. So what do you need to do all this planning for?" Kunikida's eyes widened in realization, of course, how could he have not seen it before?
"Thought of a good place I see, good for you. Everything else should be a sinch! Wouldn't you agree?" Kunikida nodded as he tore out the pages of worthless notes as he started his new page.

"Yes Dazai...I think I know just the place, thank you."
"Of course! I'm happy to help anytime it comes to love!"
"I honestly expected you to try to trick me, but now I know exactly what to do."
"Are you kidding?! I've been shipping you guys for years, I've had to write fanfiction of you for the clerks! Anyway! I gotta go, Atsushi probably needs my help now with something! Best of luck!" Dazai ran off as Kunikida turned in his seat.

"Wait, what?!"

-Timeskip-

Kunikida approached your desk sheepishly, you were sorting out paper work as In'ei was on the floor drawing on construction paper. Now that he was actually going to ask you, he couldn't help the butterflies fluttering in his chest.

"Hey Kunikida! What's up?" You asked, noticing him, which made him straighten as a large pink blush overtook his face.

"Uh...(Y/N) well, I was wondering if you would be interested in accompanying me for some Boba tea tonight? It seemed you really liked it last time, and I was thinking it would be nice to uh...to try some..." now it was your turn to sport a light blush.

Is he...is he asking me out?

"O...of course, I don't mind. That place is really good, I'm glad you want to try it." You agreed, Kunikida's eyes widened before he regained his composure, clearing his throat.

"I'm glad to hear it, I'll see you after work then." He nodded, to which you nodded back.

"Y...yeah..."
Unbeknownst to you, the clerks were peeking behind the door with their phones out and scary auras around them.

"This is just like the fanfictions Dazai posts!" They cackled as if they were one entity.

-Timeskip-

That bench that the two of you always sat on seemed smaller than ever as you were on that possible date. It was quiet, perhaps it could be perceived as awkward but you didn't mind watching the boats on the water, you also didn't mind this time of night since no one seemed to notice In'ei as she played behind you, though they have acknowledged Kunikida's presence it seems that your acceptance of your feelings has changed their behavior around him, which was a good thing and has only added to Yosano's theory. You glanced at Kunikida, smiling when you saw the boba tea he purchased in hand, though his brows were furrowed and lips drawn into a thin line as if he was thinking of something important.

At least he got a boba tea this time, that means he's participating right? You thought as your gaze went back to the water, you didn't notice Kunikida shift himself so instead of leaning forward on the bench he was leaning back, fiddling with his sleeve as he kept glancing at you.

This is it now Kunikida, this is the moment, just tell her how you feel, there's no need to be nervous...

Kunikida cleared his throat, which drew your attention to him.

"(Y/N), there's uh...there's something I've been wanting to tell you for a really long time now..." he faced you as he tried his best to maintain eye contact.

"Really? What is it?" You asked curiously.

Is he...is he going to confess? In'ei watched from behind the bench with baited breath, showcasing your eagerness of what you thought Kunikida was about to say to the world. Kunikida couldn't help but avert his eyes to a patch of grass from behind the bench as he rubbed the back of his neck.

This is it...the moment of truth...

"(Y/N)," Kunikida turned back to meet your gaze once again, "I love you. You don't have to feel pressured to date me or give me an answer now, but I just wanted you to know how I feel about you." Despite the calmness of his voice Kunikida's face was a bright red, but yours only doubled in a brigh hue as you used your straw to stir your boba tea.

"Kunikida...I think...I think I like you a lot too..." you confessed sheepishly.

"I know you should focus on yourself because you need to control your ability, but if you want to start, I don't know...dating or something, just let me know when you're ready for that. I'll be here waiting until then..." Kunikida's eyes drifted from you to the view in front of him.
"Can't we just start dating now?!" You blurted, making Kunikida's eyes snap back to you, his face the most scarlet it could possibly get.

"I...I mean...well...I really like your hugs, going out to places with you, and when we make pancakes together...and...and well...I really hate that it's only when bad things happen that I get to experience those things with you. So...do you think that maybe...we could start doing that every day? If...if that's alright with you that is..." you spoke as you continued to stir your drink out of embarrassment, unable to look Kunikida in the eye. Kunikida smiled, putting down his drink before scooting over to your side for a surprise hug.

"Alright, let's start now." You smiled as you hugged him back, pressing your face into his chest.

"I...I'd like that." You closed your eyes as you enjoyed the hug, the first one in a long time that wasn't given to you because of sadness or grief, and it wasn't one that was meant to comfort you either. This was a hug that was given out of the purest of joy, and the softest of love.

The road to accepting all of my thoughts and feelings is gonna be hard...

You imagined yourself on a dirt road, with nothing to see but the sunset ahead.

...but I know with Kunikida by my side, I won't falter on this path I've chosen.

Then, Kunikida materialized next to you as he held out his hand, for the first time in a long time, you grinned as you took it, the both of you beginning to walk on this path together, the sun rising on a new day.

A strong breeze blew by, making you shiver as you snuggled closer into Kunikida, opening your eyes, managing to also see the beautiful view of the pier through the hug you were recieving.

"I love you Kunikida." You sighed in content, fully relaxed in his arms.

"I love you too, (Y/N)."
