~James~
I wake up the next morning glad it’s Saturday. Without getting out of bed I reach over and grab my phone from the nightstand. I dial Kat’s number.
“Hello?” she answers cheerfully.
I smile a little, “Hey Kat. It’s me James,”
“Hey Serenity’s boyfriend,” she responds and I can basically picture the huge toothy smile she must have on her face.
Too bad I’m going to wipe it off.
“I’m not,” I say, “Serenity and I just won’t work out,” I continue.
“What?” she asks.
Gosh she’s slow.
“Serenity doesn’t want anything to do with me and I’m done as well,” I respond.
Lies. All lies.
“B-b-but Serenity’s just mildly stupid. She’ll come around,” Kat exclaims.
I laugh slightly then. Leave it to Kat to say something like that.
“I’ll always be there for her,” I say and then continue, “I-I just have to get used to the idea that Serenity doesn’t want me,”
Lies. I won’t be able to. Not when she’s so close.
“B-b-but it’s not supposed to be this way,” Kat protests.
“Well at least I know I fought for her, right?” I ask.
"That still isn’t enough. Only having her will be enough," my mind argues.
~Serenity~
I listen to James. I can’t help the single tear that escapes my eye. I don’t know what I had thought when I came down here. I don’t even know why I have my ear pressed to the door.
But I do know that he’s right. He fought for me. I didn't fight for him.
But he also kissed someone else and almost broke my boyfriend. He didn’t respect my decisions. He tried to manipulate me with his soft lips and shining eyes.
Why, why am I so confused?
I walk away after a few more seconds; the feeling of the cold metal handle still on my palm. Things happen for a reason, right?
~James~
What if-what if we-we,” Kat starts and I can basically see the wheels in her head turning.
“What if you make her jealous?” Kat bursts out.
“Kat that’s a stupid idea,” I start before I actually process her idea.
“Kat, that wasn’t actually stupid!” I exclaim after a few seconds.
Of course. Why hadn’t I thought of that?
“Congrats,” I say.
“I don’t know whether to be insulted or complimented,” Kat mumbles on the other side of the line.
“But,” she starts again this time cheery, “I know just the right person who will make Serenity’s blood boil,”
“Who?” I ask.
~Serenity~
I walk into the kitchen and sit on the stool. Once again there’s a banquet of food ready. I grab a piece of toast and nibble on the edge frustrated.
“What’s wrong?” someone says.
I turn around to face Josh with his hands in his pockets.
“How did you get in here?” I ask incredulously.
“Oh well I have a spare key. I have some uh-business to take care of with James,” he replies.
“What kind of business?” I inquire curiously.
“The business kind,” he responds smirking before asking me once again what’s wrong.
I let out a long breath.
“Nothing really. I just um,” I rack my brain for a good excuse.
“I’m just really sad at how bad of a girlfriend I am. I don’t even know my boyfriend’s number,” I reply laughing shakily.
He frowns, “Why do you need it when you can just walk to him?”
I gulp then, “James is not my boyfriend,” I clarify.
“Oh,” he says and pauses before saying, “I better go,”
Without another word he walks past me and in the direction of James’s room.
I slouch deeper into my chair; yeah I’m so sulking now.
~James~
“I hope this works,”
“It’s your last shot,” Kat replies.
“So I’ll work on it on Monday,”
“Just make sure you don’t actually get sucked into her poison,”
I laugh at that, “I didn’t then, did I?”
“Bye, James,” Kat replies.
“You just don’t want to admit your wrong,” I say quickly just as she hangs up.
Suddenly there’s knocking on my door.
Foolishly thinking it’s Serenity I bring my hands up to my hair trying to smooth it down. Then knowing it probably isn’t I let my hands drop back down.
“Uh, come in,” I say.
Josh bursts into the room before I can even let out another breath. My eyes widen.
“Uh Josh,” I start, but he doesn’t let me continue.
Instead he takes a few crisp steps towards me and plops down at the edge of the bed.
“I’m sorry to hear about Serenity,” he says worry, most likely for my sanity, etched on his face.
I smile. Same old goofy Josh.
“She didn’t die, Josh,” I say matter-of-factly.
“She’s taken dude. She might as well be half dead to you,”
I laugh at the half dead part.
“Yeah, but I have a plan,”
“Is that so?” he asks cocking his head to the side.
“Yeah,” I say grinning.
“That’s great then!” he says smiling.
“Thanks for the enthusiasm…” I say a little confused.
“You didn’t let me finish,” he says and then continues, “Because now I can do this,”
With that said he gets up and punches me in the stomach; hard.
I growl, but clutch the sheets instead of retaliating.
I mean I deserved that.
“That was for leaving me at the restaurant,” he exclaims.
I nod in understanding.
“Now that that’s out of the way, how are you going to get Serenity?”
I smile, slightly rubbing my aching stomach. Damn Josh has a good punch.
“Simple, really,”
~Kat~
My phone rings just as I’m falling back asleep. Cursing the person who’s calling me I grudgingly pick up.
“What is it?” I ask a little pissed off.
“Hi Kat,” Serenity answers and I can tell by the sound of her voice that she’s a little taken aback.
I sigh.
“Hey gurl, what’s up?” I reply cheerily.
“Listen if this is not a good time,” she starts, but I don’t let her finish.
“No, no it’s fine,”
“Oh well I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out?”
“Right now?” I ask looking down at my pillow lovingly.
“Uh it would be preferable,”
I sigh, “I’ll see you in an hour,”
“And hour?” she asks.
“Honey, don’t push it,” I warn.
She laughs.
“See you then.”
