~Chloe~

“Uh, Nick,” I choke out, but he’s already gone and walking towards the driver’s side.

“So how’s it been, Chloe?” Nick asks getting into the pick-up truck and starting the engine.

“Same old,” I say casually, but inside I’m a jungle of emotions.

                Nick just kissed me.

And my lips sort of tingle.

                Oh my gosh.

I want to kiss him again.

~~

                “We’re here,” Nick announces.

I look out the window to see a nice fancy restaurant. Where here? I’ve been thinking for this long?

                “Oh classy,” I say.

“Wait here,” he tells me before hopping out the truck and running inside.

“Sure,” I say to his retreating back.

I can see why Becka liked kissing him now.

                Stop it!

                Remember the bet!

                Bu-

                No buts!

                Remember Hank!

Great I’m going crazy. Just peachy.

Slowly my mind starts shutting down.

                ~~

“Chloe wake up, we’re here,” Nick whispers nudging me ever so slightly.

“I fell asleep?” I ask even though it’s pretty obvious.

                “Yeah,” Nick replies chuckling.

“Well, sorry,” I say getting up and stretching.

“No problem, it made the surprise better,” he says.

I look up to see where at the very end of the beach. The afternoon sun's reflecting on the water and it makes it look like the scene should be on a postcard.

“The beach?” I ask and then continue,” It’s so beautiful.”

“No, this isn’t it,” Nick says now opening my door.

He gives me his hand and helps me down. Then, he gets on the wheel of the car and reaches in the back. He pulls out a backpack.

“Come on,” he says taking my hand and racing towards the sand.

I trip a few times, but he doesn’t slow down.

                “Slow down!” I yell.

“Can’t, if we do we’ll miss it,” he replies.

I start running faster, the sand flying behind us, to keep up with his fast pace.

“Can I know exactly what I’m running like a maniac for?” I ask.

“Nope,” he replies popping the p.

“Well why don’t we just stop here and enjoy the sunset. It’s about to start,” I call back looking at the horizon.

“This is better,” he says pulling me along.

Finally we get to the edge of the water. He puts the back-pack on his back and then picks me up: Bridal style.

“Whoa, what are you doing!?” I ask frantically.

“Oh, it’s okay,” he says and gets in the water.

He starts running again; the water splashing around us. Surprisingly as he keeps going the water doesn’t get any deeper.

                “Sand bar,” he explains.

I nod before closing my eyes and snuggling my head in his chest. Might as well just sit back and enjoy the ride, right?

Suddenly I feel a branch whack the back of my head. I open my eyes startled.

                “Sorry!” Nick apologizes.

I look around to see we’re on the small island.

“Aren’t we not supposed to be here?” I ask.

“Don’t worry about it,” he says.

I just shake my head in defeat. Then, I start freaking out. What is he going to do to me? What’s in his back-pack? How could I let him drive me all the way to the beach and then drag me on some island where no one else is? What if he kills me or something?!

With those thoughts in mind I start whacking his chest like a maniac.

                “Let me go!” I scream.

“Chloe, ow! Clam down! Ow!” he yells back at me.

You know me. I’m not one to give up so I stop punching his hard chest to dig my nails in his shoulder blades.

“Ow! Yikes woman!” Nick screams dropping me on the dirt.

“Ha! Freedom,” I yell starting to crawl away.

But I spoke to soon because Nick grabs me by the waist and throws me over his shoulder.

“Let me down!” I shout kicking and screaming.

I get him in the stomach.

“Oof! Damn it, Chloe!” he yells running through some trees, “What’s wrong with you?!”

“How do I know you’re not going to murder me, huh?” I say, “How do I know what’s in the bag?”

“Fine, ruin the surprise, take a look,” he says and I can basically see him rolling his eyes, “FYI you watch too many movies,”

I open the back-pack to see take-out and a blanket. Oh, we’re having a picnic. How sweet! Oh…

I giggle nervously, “Um, sorry?” I offer.

He just shakes his head before bursting through a small clearing. Then he sets me down.

“Damn it girl, you beat me up,” he states rubbing his stomach.

“Sorry?” I say again giving him a sheepish smile.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he replies, “Can I trust you to follow me?” he asks.

“Yeah, but why did you pick me up in the first place?” I ask.

“So you wouldn’t get your dress dirty or wet,” he answers, then adds, “That obviously didn’t pan out.”

I stare down at my once white dress and see patches of it covered in dirt. Yeah I am so not a smart cookie.

                “That‘s so sweet,” I mumble.

“I have my moments,” he says shrugging before grasping my petite hand in his bigger, warmer masculine one.

Slowly he leads me through a cave.

“Watch your step,” he says before covering my eyes with his hands.

“Ha, ha, ha,” I say sarcastically.

                He laughs.

“Okay,” he states taking his hands off my eyes and wrapping his arms around my waist.

In front of me is probably the most gorgeous scene I’ve ever seen. We’re at the back of the cave, but instead of the big stone wall there’s a clearing. The ocean water crashes around huge black rocks off to the sides. It’s probably the clearest water I’ve ever seen. But the best part has to be the sunset.

The sky looks like it’s painted in with purples, yellows, blues, and pinks. The sky also reflects on the water making it look like a rainbow was split on it. And finally, to top it all off dolphins are jumping along the horizon.

                “It’s, it’s, incredible,” I say.

“I knew you would like it,” Nick replies detaching himself from me.

I hear movement in the background, but I’m still way too fascinated to turn around and see what he’s doing.

“Smile,” he says turning me and snapping a picture of both of us with the scene as the background.

His camera is one of the really fancy, professional ones and when he shows me the picture it really looks like it belongs on the postcard. We look genuinely fascinated and happy.  I smile and then stand on tip-toes to kiss his cheek.

“Thanks for bringing me here,” I whisper.

“No problem,” he replies giving me a real smile; not one of his cocky grins.

“Well, let’s eat,” he adds gesturing towards the laid out food and blankets.

I sit down just as the sun goes down.

“It’s getting awfully dark,” I say.

“Not a problem,” he responds taking out a lighter and getting up.

He lights a row of white candles that I had failed to notice before.

“Tonight we dine by candlelight,” he says in a bad imitation of a barbarian.

“And I watch to many movies?” I ask incredulously.

He laughs, “Yes, yes you do,”

I laugh with him for a while before digging into my Greek salad. Nick joins me and starts eating his own salad. Him being a boy and everything finishes way before I do and brings out our main course: chicken parmesan.

“How did you know I like this?” I ask referring to both the salad and the pasta.

                “Lucky guess,” he replies.

I smile at him and we fall into a comfortable silence.

Every now and then I sneak a peek at him. But can you blame me? He looks so handsome with the flame of the candle flickering and annunciating his chiseled features.

“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” Nick says smirking.

“Okay,” I chirp grabbing his camera and taking a picture; stunning his eyes in the process.

He rubs them, “Thanks for that,” he says sarcastically.

“Oh you’re welcome,” I reply before adding, “So how many girls have you brought here?” I ask nonchalantly half of me caring and the other not.

                “No one,” he whispers.

I almost choke on my piece of spaghetti, and then swallow it with difficulty. In my peripheral vision I see my water bottle. I grab it and just because it seems to fit in the moment I take a sip and then spit it out.

“I’ve always wanted to do that,” I say smiling cheekily at Nick.

“You’re such a child,” he says rolling his eyes.

I cock an eyebrow, “You got a problem with that?”

“Very intimidating,” Nick says sarcastically before getting up and in a flash picking me up.

                “What’s with all the man-handling!” I yell.

“Just enjoy the ride,” he says and I find my vision settling on his finely shaped ass.

                No Chloe! Bad Chloe!

                “Uh,” Is my intelligent response.

He laughs and then sets me down. I look to around to see we’re in the middle of the rocks. But surprisingly they form a semi-circle so we don’t get our feet wet.

“It’s like or own natural pool,” he says before grabbing onto my waist and jumping in.

I shriek my voice echoing through the night.

He pulls me up and I shiver slightly.

“Oh, it’s not that cold,” he says.

“Yeah, but there goes my hair,” I reply.

I must look really attractive; dirty dress and wet hair.

I roll my eyes. He chuckles; a soft hearty sound.

Then he reaches out and puts a strand of loose hair behind my ear.

“I’ve never seen a real relationship. Well, one that works,” he says out of the blue.

                “Wha-“

But he cuts me off, “And so I stopped believing in love. Actually I don’t think I ever did. I just didn’t, don't, want to be hurt like all the people around me.”

“You don’t have to tell me this,” I say softly.

“But you want to know,” he says half smiling.

I nod my head; after all it’s true. I didn’t ask, but I want to know.

“When I was small I would watch my father scream at my mom.  He would stagger home drunk and scream at her. I would be told to go to my room, but no matter how far away I was I could still hear his voice ringing in my ears and I would get mad, but I was too small to do anything.”

“Oh, Nick,” I start, but he shakes his head telling me he’s not finished.

“And then when I was sixteen he came home really, really drunk. And he hit her. I still remember it; the loud smacking sound his hand made against her cheek. She fell right off her feet. I screamed and ran to him; the angriest I’ve ever been,” his voice breaks; his face contorting into one of pain and anger.

I reach out and wipe one of his stray frustrated tears from his face and he leans into my hand ever so slightly.

“I punched him. I punched him again and again for all the times he yelled at her; for that loud deafening smack. I remember him punching me back, but I was so furious I didn’t even feel it. And then guess what?” he asks with a fake tight smile.

“What?” I murmur afraid to ask out loud.

“My mom got up and screamed at me to stop,” he laughs humorlessly. “She actually grabbed me by the shoulders and yanked my back. I looked at her bewildered and confused, but she just kept yelling at me. She told me to get out and to never lay a hand on that bastard again, well she called him my father,”

“Nick that’s horrible,” I exclaim hugging him; my teeth chattering slightly since we were still floating, on the now black, water.

“That was two years ago. Now I live with my Aunt and Uncle,” he says shrugging. “And they live like friends and well all my friends are players so you can see what I have love based on,” he finishes.

“That’s not true, you’ll find her someday,” I reply against his neck.

He pets my hair softly, “Maybe I already did,” he whispers so softly that it’s almost inaudible.

My heart lurches at the thought of him falling for me when I’m playing him, well playing him back.

“I think she’s out there waiting to meet you,” I say pretending not to have heard him.

“Maybe,” he replies before pulling back.

“You must be cold and it’s getting late, we should head back,” he continues.

“Yeah, but first I want dessert,” I say smiling and he laughs slipping back into his care-free player attitude.

“As you wish,” he states before pulling me back on shore.

                “Oh and Nick,” I say.

                He looks down, “Yes,”

I kiss him; softly and a bit passionately so he knows I understand what he went through; what he felt.

“If you ever kiss me without permission again, I’ll hit you with a baseball bat,”
