It was a day that will forever change the world of kpop once again.
The day when YG Entertainment's new girl group, Blackpink, made their debut, they immediately made an impact throughout the industry as a whole.
That moment was certainly one that their fans will never forget, as even they don't know at that time that the group is destined to become icons both in Korea and worldwide.
As one of those who were eagerly waiting for them, you can consider yourself to be the happiest one among them all, knowing that the most important friend whom you had known for a long time had finally taken her first steps towards realizing her dream.
After so long, you will also be able to see her on stage, and with this, you are certain that the time for your reunion with her is just around the corner.
"You finally made it, Jennie. Now we can both tell to each other that we are now living our dreams as kpop stars. I can't wait to meet with you again." You thought while watching her perform for the first time in a music show.
Still, even you understood that from now on, she will be busy not just with their promotional activities, but also through several variety shows and fan meetings as well. Such is the kind of life that both of you had expected once you finally managed to debut in the kpop world. Despite this, you were hoping that in between the rough schedules that you both have at the moment, she will find the time to meet with you eventually.
You know that something like that would prove to be difficult, given how this will affect your respective careers.
Then again, you simply regarded it as a trivial matter, and as long as you are careful to avoid getting caught, everything will be fine.
While you were thinking this, you can't help but wonder if Jennie is pondering about the same thing.
Knowing her, she must surely miss you as well, and that she would jump at the first sign of opportunity to see you again.
Having such thoughts managed to make you chuckle a bit, as you remembered how she would always pout or worse, be upset if she can't get what she wants.
"So you're watching them again, huh? Well I can't blame you, Y/N. They're all beautiful and talented, so I'm not surprised that their popularity had skyrocketed this quickly." Your fellow member, Doyoung said as he sat beside you while holding a bag of potato chips.
"Y-yeah, I can agree with that, Doyoung-ah. The future's looking great for them, that's for sure."
"Mhm. Now tell me, which one of them is your bias?"
Certainly, that question surprised you, as he waits for your answer.
"Yah, I really don't have a specific member I like more than the others, so I'll just tell you that they're all my biases."
"So you stan all of them, huh? Yeah, right. Sure, I could believe that, but there has to be one member that stood out the most to you. Don't be shy, Y/N. We're the only ones here, anyway."
"Aish, as if I could trust you! I just know that you're going to tell everyone the moment you get a chance!" You told him.
"Hahaha! Hmm, I'll admit that I am tempted to do that. But just this once, I won't. Now tell me."
"Why are you so interested to know my bias anyway?"
"Aha! I knew it! So you do have one! "
"Oh crap. J-just forget what I said, okay?" You angrily told him.
"Not this time. But since you won't tell me who, then I'll just have to guess. I'll simply figure it out based on your facial expressions then."
Hearing this made you feel tense all of a sudden, as you didn't expect Doyoung to be this persistent about it.
"Let's see. How about Kim Jisoo? I'm pretty sure that if there's one member who would attract you at first glance, it would be her. Come on, she has top-notch visuals after all."
You simply smiled at him teasingly, making him realize that he's mistaken.
"So it's not her. Hmm, that's fine. Okay then, how about Lisa, their maknae? But if it's her, then we will have a problem." He said.
"Huh? Why's that?"
"Because she's mine, enough said." He answered with a serious tone.
"Grow up, pabo."
"Yah, I was just kidding, or am I? Eh, let's continue. I guess that only leaves two."
You gulped as you tried to focus on watching the show while forcing yourself to keep a straight face as Doyoung continues to play his little guessing game.
"So it's between Jennie and Rose now. This is going to be tough. Still, as much as I want to say that it's the latter, something tells me that Jennie's your bias. Did I guess it right?"
You tried to ignore him with all your might, but the way you slightly blushed upon hearing Jennie's name managed to give it away.
"Hehe, so you really like her that much, don't you? There's no sense it hiding it now, Y/N."
You sighed in defeat afterwards, as you had no choice but to tell the truth.
"Yeah, but so what if she's my bias? It doesn't make a difference, anyway."
"You can say that, but the way you reacted when I spoke her name meant that you really like her a lot, not just because you're a fan of hers."
Doyoung's words struck true, as for some unexplainable reason he managed to guess what you truly feel about her, even though you never told anyone the truth about your true relationship with Jennie. Having no words to say, you sat in silence as you can't even focus on the television anymore after hearing what he said.
For his part, Doyoung had a thought that you're not telling him something important, like there's more to what he had assumed about Jennie being your bias. He had known you for quite a while now, and that he became a friend of yours upon meeting him during your trainee years. It's no wonder that he had a clear idea as to the kind of person you are and what's going on in your mind most of the time. It's for that reason why you tend to rely on him more than the other members.
"Okay, I won't pry you further on that one, Y/N. I apologize if I made you uncomfortable just now."
"Please don't do that, Doyoung-ah. I'm fine. But you're right. She's.....very special to me, in more ways than one. I'm sorry if I can't tell you anything besides that."
"I understand. Don't worry, I promise I won't tell anyone else about this, but now I know that I was right. So you really do know her in person."
"Yes that's true. She's a really close friend of mine, and to be honest, I can't wait to be able to talk with her again in person." You said.
"I hope so too Y/N, really. Though it might seem impossible right now, I really hope that you'll be able to. Wait, have you tried to call her once after she debuted? She should be able to use her phone now if I'm not mistaken."
"I did of course, but she's not answering any of my calls or my messages. To tell you the truth, I'm starting to feel worried." You said as you looked down in sadness.
"Hey, don't be like that. Perhaps she's just really busy with all their activities right now, which we both know is true. Like you, she's just waiting for the right moment to see you again, I just know it. But if she's not answering your calls or even your messages, then the worst part is that she already had a new phone number, which I hope not. The point is, if you really mean a lot to her, she'll find a way, and that she's certain that you are doing the same thing."
"B-but w-what if she-"
"Don't even try to think of that, Y/N. If you do, then you're telling me that you've given up already. If that's the case, then I'm really disappointed in you."
"No, I haven't given up yet. I shouldn't think like that so easily."
"Now that's the Y/N I know. So stop feeling like the world's about to end, all right? Right then, give me that remote. I'll find a show we can watch so you can get your mind off of those worries."
You chuckled a bit at his suggestion as you gave him the remote, but deep down, you know that he's right.
All you have to do is to be patient, and soon, that patience will be rewarded for certain.
However, as time passed, you felt unsure as to how long could you try and be as such, without any knowledge as to how long you will have to wait for her.
Little by little, the negative thoughts about you being insignificant to Jennie began to cloud your mind.
You felt scared, all because of the possibility that Jennie really doesn't want anything to do with you anymore.
Granted, there's a part of you that still strongly believes that it isn't so, but the longer the distance between the two of you lingered, the more you lose hope about her wanting to see you again.
At that moment, you felt as if you're at a crossroads, torn between two choices that made you struggle to think which is right.
It's either you believe that your relationship with her had dissolved that you have to move on from her altogether, or to keep waiting with all uncertainty for that chance to come.
For sure, none of these seem the like the perfect choice, and that alone made you stressed out.
Unbeknownst to you, the answer that you seek will later present itself, regardless of how you will feel afterwards.
At the end of 2016, both of your groups are invited to perform for a yearend show, just like all the popular kpop groups do annually.
It was an event that may feel like a culmination of everything that you had done so far before welcoming another year ahead.
As expected, this highly-public event was surrounded by excitement from all kpop fans who are privileged to be there, as well as for the millions of people who are watching the live telecast through the internet.
Like before, this was another grand opportunity to make your fans happy once more time before the year draws to a close.
Your group's performance was highly anticipated, given how large your fandom became after only a short span of time.
Certainly, it was a wonderful memory for you and your members, who went on to give another spectacular performance that won the hearts of many.
It would have been a perfect event for you, as this might be a good chance to meet Jennie in person, and when you do, then you will know the answer that you've been waiting for.
This could be the only time for you to speak to her after so long, and you wouldn't dare to miss it.
But alas, it didn't happen, much to your regret.
It would have been a lot less painful had you failed to talk to her because of unforeseen circumstances, but during that situation, there was no excuse.
There you were, walking on the day towards their waiting room, gleaming with hope.
But then, that hope was shattered in an instant the moment Jennie and the other Blackpink members ran into you.
They greeted you out of courtesy when they did, but soon after, they immediately walked away.
When they left, you stood there blankly, shocked by how "cold" she was when she greeted you.
Surely, it would have been way too out of line for Jennie to at least give you a sign of how she truly missed you, but in your mind, you wanted to see her do such a thing.
You were desperate to find out what she truly felt towards you after such a long time, and the fact that she didn't give you anything only added to the amount of stress that you are feeling.
Neither a small thought that she didn't forget the promise that you had, nor a form of closure that will allow you to move on.
It was a terrible way for you to end the year, as no matter how you look at it, it's as if that she had cast you aside like nothing.
You can tell yourself without question that you made it, having realized your dream to become an idol, even though it wasn't the path that you initially chose.
But despite that, you were happy that you were able to achieve something, and that the happiness and support that you receive from fans meant that it was worth it.
After all, that's what a life of an idol is all about, right?
As long as you are able to bring such joy to the people behind you, then nothing else matters, is that not so?
You risked everything to get to where you are, having gone through different challenges that tried to stop you from realizing your dream.
Through it all, you made friends along the way, and that you became so close to them than you could possibly thought you would.
As someone who hails from another country, many would consider your case as extremely fortunate, and that you managed to become an idol through a combination of your skills, talents and luck.
Anyone who dreams to become a kpop idol would all want to be in your shoes, and that's because the life that you have now will be nothing but a distant dream to them.
But none of them will ever understand the sacrifice that you made when you decided to chase after your dream.
You risked everything, from the simple pleasures that a normal person would have all the way to the very person whom you value above all else.
Once you finally got to where you would want to be, you felt genuine emptiness, not knowing why you feel that way.
Or maybe you do, and it's only because you are in self-denial that you try to convince yourself that you do not know the answer.
When you're at your most vulnerable, the only question that came up to you was this.
After letting go of something that was equally precious to you just to reach your dream, was it all worth it?
The first month of the year began with your group in the midst of preparing for a comeback.
However, unlike before, the sense of enthusiasm that you once had was no longer there.
After what happened at the concert last year, you felt nothing but sadness in your heart, not knowing what to do next.
You tried to hide it from everyone else including Doyoung and Jaehyun, as you wouldn't want them to worry.
But knowing them, they already figured it out what was causing you to feel that way, though either of them weren't sure what to say to you other than simple words to try and cheer you up.
It worked for the most part, but once you are reminded of Jennie again, the grief comes back so easily, almost as if it never left your fragile heart.
On the other hand, you don't want to let such feelings get in the way, so you steeled yourself and try to be a good leader for your members, no matter how difficult it may seem.
Fortunately, you managed to do a good job, and that everyone was complimenting you for your efforts, with you feeling proud to have such a supportive group behind your back, even though your group became much bigger since after you debuted.
Being able to become a good example towards your members is one thing, but hanging out and being friends with them is a lot more special.
At the very least, you worries had lessened because of the bond that you share with them, and little by little, you can see yourself coping up from all the pain that dwelled inside you.
As another month went by, you were ready to move forward. You thought that such feelings that you once had for her should not get in the way of living the dream that you both shared.
The important thing is that you can finally say that both you and Jennie are already living the life you both wanted for yourselves. Right now, both of you are two of the most popular and talented kpop idols of this generation, and that is something no one could possibly deny.
But during one ordinary day, something unexpected was bound to occur, one that will lead to what you would take as nothing short of a miracle.
You were simply making the most out of your day-off at a cafe when you received a message from an unknown phone number.
Curious, you decided to read it, and you did, your eyes widened upon figuring out the only person who could have sent it.
"Please meet me at the place where we first made our promise. I want to see you again Y/N, for I have a lot of things to tell you after so long."
There was no mistaking it.
You then hurriedly saved the number on your phone, and afterwards, you called Doyoung, who was supposed to meet you at the cafe, to not wait for you.
Thankfully he agreed, as you then carefully went towards the exit while making sure that no one recognized you in your disguise.
Meanwhile, a certain girl is also about to leave her dorm in order to meet someone, until she saw one of her members who was waiting at the living room.
"Jisoo-unnie, I'll be gone for a little while. Is there anything you want me to buy for you before I go home?" She asked.
"I don't have anything in mind. But where exactly are you going?" She asked, making Jennie flustered.
"U-umm, I just figured that I want to unwind for a while, t-that's all. I was thinking of going to the park or someplace similar, but don't worry. I'll be careful not to be seen by anyone." She answered.
It was then when Jisoo stood up from the couch towards her, as Jennie noticed a smile on her face.
"Let me guess. You're going to see him today, aren't you?" She asked in a teasing manner.
"Huh? W-who are you talking about? I-I don't have a boyfriend or anyone like that!"
"Really? Then what's this?"
Jisoo then showed her a photo of you in her hand, as Jennie suddenly began to panic when she saw it.
"Unnie, w-where did you get that?"
"Do you remember when you left your diary lying around the sofa before? Well that photo fell off when I took it. I gave the diary to you the next day while not mentioning the picture, as I wanted to know the truth from you when the time is right. It didn't seem like just an ordinary picture of him as well, judging from what you wrote at the back. I can't believe that you personally know Y/N of NCT, and from the looks of it, you're very close to him as well."
Jennie was unable to say anything in reply, as Jisoo went on to give her a hug as she gave the photo back to her.
"Unnie, are you going to tell anyone about Y/N and I?" She asked with a worried expression on her face.
Jisoo chuckled a bit before answering, as she gave her a look of assurance that she won't.
"Jennie, do you really think that I will tell someone about this little secret that you have? While it's true that as your unnie, it's my responsibility to keep our group intact, free from any distraction that might get in the way of our careers. However, that doesn't mean that I will also take away what makes you happy in your life. I know that the idol life we chose for ourselves had deprived us some personal freedoms, but despite that, I still believe that no one has the right to force you not to be with someone you truly like. As long as you're both responsible towards each other, then I see no problem with it at all. Not to mention that you really miss him a lot, didn't you?"
"Yes. It took all of me to try and greet him normally when we saw him back then. I wanted to talk to him, to embrace him just like we did before. I haven't forgotten the promise we made, and this time, I will do what's right."
"Good. That's one of the things I like about you, Jennie. Now go. He's waiting for you."
Jennie smiled back at her unnie before leaving, with Jisoo cheering her on.
An hour later, you arrived at the very place where you and Jennie last saw each other before you became trainees.
Things were much different now compared to before, as this was the first time you visited Namsan Tower since you and her had parted ways.
Right now, you are feeling anxious as to what will happen, and that you were unsure what she wanted to tell you today.
The sun is about to set, as the view of the city felt somewhat melancholic in your eyes.
"It's been while, Y/N. Thank you for being here with me today."
You felt stunned for a bit upon looking at the masked girl who said those words to you.
There she is.
The very girl whom you wanted to see for a long time.
The same girl whom you thought had forgotten the promise that you made together, and now that she's here, you are at a loss for words, not knowing what you should do or say to her now that she's standing right next to you.
"Jennie, I-"
All this time, you were afraid thinking that she only wanted to meet you one last time, and that she had no intention of keeping the relationship that you shared together.
But at that same moment, she proved you wrong.
You were unable to finish what you were about to say when she suddenly embraced you tightly, with no intention of letting you go.
While she was doing this, you then heard her sniffling while burying her face in your chest, as you began to look around you to see if there are people who are watching you.
Thankfully, no one was there at that time, much to your relief.
"Jennie, you can let go now. Let's just-"
"No! For once.....just.....shut up....and.....let me.....do this....." She said in between her sniffles.
You can tell how much she missed you, and this act of hers more than proves that after all this time, she was trying to endure everything just like you did.
She longed for this very exact moment after waiting for six long years, hoping with all her heart that you will never forget the promise that you made with her.
In other words, neither of you didn't know what the other was feeling for a long time, but that's just the past now.
Words were no longer needed to describe how you two missed each other so badly, and as you looked at each other's eyes once more, the feelings of uncertainty were replaced by that of doubtlessness.
From that day on, both of you can now look forward to a much more pleasant future ahead, having fulfilled your promise to meet each other again after a long and challenging path towards your dreams.
"I can never be happier than I am now, Jennie. Today I can finally say to you that we both made it, and that I'm glad that I am able to share this moment with you."
"Thank you Y/N. Now I can finally tell you that despite everything that happened to us to get to where we are now, it's all worth it in the end. I'm happy that we both succeeded, and while we both changed since then, we changed for the better. From now on, I'll always be by your side, just as we always do."
