Today I found Cody back in his room.
I knocked on his door.
He opened it and let me in. His room smelled of cigarettes.
"Ugh. Cody. I can keep your secret but a room smelling like this. Will just give it away."
"Yeah. I'm trying to keep it outside most of the time but it still settles."
"Well, keep your fan on, have your bedsheets changed, and have your "trash" thrown out regularly," I said.
"Oh. Yeah, about that. I'm sorry. It's just that... ugh. I'm...."
"Where did you go??"
"Look, Grace. It's complicated, okay?"
"I don't care how complicated it was! Look at me! Does my life look simple?"
"No."
"Then where were you? Were you buying drugs?"
"Agh! Yes! Yes, Grace! Yes, I was buying drugs. Well kind of."
"What do you mean?"
"I was buying them to sell them."
I didn't know how to feel.
"Okay. Thank you for telling the truth,"
"Grace, I'm sorry. I should have just told you. I won't lie again."
"Promise?
"Promise."
