Allie

This gag has been in my mouth for far too long – it's crusty with dried spittle. I chew on the material nervously as my brother talks to Beatrice. She looks nothing like me, apart from our hair and eyes. I can tell that she is wondering why my brother Jak doesn't have a gag.

The reason is because, when we first got captured, I was yelling and screaming and trying to fight my way out. However, Jak just sat there in uncomfortable silence and let them take us. At the time I thought he was too lazy to put up a fight, but it turns out that he was just trying to protect us both. Our captors didn't trust me not to scream, so they stuffed an old sock in my mouth and tied a scarf around my head like they did to Beatrice. My brother was a model hostage and said barely a word.

Beatrice, or Tris as they call her, is slumped against the wall with her eyes closed. I wonder if she's really sleeping or just closing her eyes to escape reality.
