~ Let's learn How to "Count Numbers" in Korean ^^ Part 1
Counting in Korean is pretty straightforward!
There are two sets of numbers in Korean: the native Korean system and the Sino-Korean system.
1. Sino-Korean system - is based on Chinese numbers and are used for dates, money, addresses, phone numbers, and numbers above 100.
2. Native Korean system - are used for numbers of items (1-99) and age.
We will start with counting in Sino-Korean. Let's start with some numbers between 1 and 20, before moving on to much larger numbers!
1 - 일 – eel 11 - 십일 - ship eel
2 - 이 – ee 12 - 십이 - ship ee
3 - 삼 – sam 13 - 십삼 - ship sam
4 - 사 – sa 14 - 십사 - ship sa
5 - 오 – o 15 - 십오 - ship o
6 - 육 – yook 16 - 십육 - ship yuk
7 - 칠 – chil 17 - 십칠 - ship shil
8 - 팔 – pal 18 - 십팔 - ship pal
9 - 구 – goo 19 - 십구 - ship gu
10 - 십 – ship 20 - 이십 - ee ship
Now we know how to count 1 - 20 using Sino-Korean. The lingering question now is, what if it goes to 30 and so on.....?
You will notice that after "십구 - ship gu" - 19, the next number becomes "이십 - i ship" meaning 20 (twenty) and it continues with the counting again.
Notice that the number 1 - 9 is placed at the beginning of the counting then "십" is next then the number 1 - 9 again.
Same rules applies for 30, 40 up to 99.
삼십 - sam ship - 30
사십 - sa ship - 40
오십 - o ship - 50
육십 - yuk ship - 60
칠십 - chil ship - 70
팔십 - pal ship - 80
구십 - gu ship - 90
What if it's in 100, 1,000, 10,000,100,000 and 1,000,000
뱍 - baek - 100
천 - cheon - 1,000
만 - man - 10,000
십만 - ship man - 100,000
백만 - baek man - 1,000,000
Remember: Sino-Korean system is used when:
~ counting money
~ measuring
~ phone numbers
~ Name of each days and months and
~ Math ^^
So... How will we write using Sino-Korean system?
Let's say...
18 - 십팔 (ship pal)
33 - 삼십 삼 (sam ship sam)
543 - 오백 사십 삼 (o baek sa ship sam)
494 - 사백 구십 사 (sa baek gu ship sa)
1991 - 천 구백 구십 일 (cheon gu baek gu ship il)
23,456 - 이만 삼천 사백 오십 육 (i man sam cheon sa baek o ship yuk)
Here is a simple way to remember on how to count in Sino-Korean.
