Vocabulary: Korean Consonants 3 – Korean Syllable Final Consonants

Korean Batchim

Syllable in Korean Hangeul consist of a consonant and a vowel, batchim is the consonant which added below a normal syllable as above which in red. There are a total of 27 batchims in Korean Hangeul system, 16 single batchims ( as above ) and 11 double batchims (ㄳ,ㄺ ). However, there are only a few Korean words with double batchim.

Batchims are very important in Korean Language, without knowing that, you can’t even form a sentence, so you must make sure that you understand this lesson well.

As a Batchim, each consonant is pronounced in one of 7 different ways (ㄱ,ㄴ,ㄹ,ㅁ,ㅇ,ㅂ,ㄷ ). For example in syllables 박, 밬, 밖 which have ㄱ, ㅋ, ㄲ as their batchims are pronounced ㄱ, So all three syllables can be pronounced 박. However, that the pronunciation of some consonants does not change when they are used as batchims. Also, ㅇ, which is silent in the initial position in a syllable, is pronounced as ng when it occurs as a Batchim.

Batchim 받침 = Sound Value ㄱ ㅋ ㄲ = ㄱ ㄴ = ㄴ ㄷ ㅅ ㅈ ㅊ ㅌ ㅎ ㅆ = ㄷ ㄹ = ㄹ ㅁ = ㅁ ㅂ ㅍ = ㅂ ㅇ = ㅇ

From the table above, for the consonants in column Batchim when it becomes a Batchim which below a normal syllable, it will only be pronounce in the sound stated in the sound value column.

• For Batchims ㄱ ㅋ ㄲ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “k” sound – 각, 갘, 갂 [ gak ]

• For Batchim ㄴ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “n” sound – 간 [ kan ]

• For Batchims ㄷ ㅅ ㅈ ㅊ ㅌ ㅎ ㅆ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “t” sound – 갇, 갓, 갖, 갗, 같, 갛, 갔 [ kat ]

• For Batchim ㄹ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “r” sound – 갈 [ kar ]

• For batchim ㅁ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “m” sound – 감 [ kam ]

• For batchim ㅂ ㅍ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “b” sound – 갑, 갚 [ kab ]

• For batchim ㅇ, when it comes to batchim, it will be pronounce as the “ng” sound – 강 [ kang ]

The batchims ㄷ ㅅ ㅈ ㅊ ㅌ ㅎ ㅆ may be difficult to memories, so for my opinion, you just need to memories the other six batchims, when you see a words with batchims but not the six you memories, then it will be the “t” sound batchim.
