~ 있다 (to exist/be, to have)
Grammar Focus:
1. 있다 expresses the existence or location of something and means ‘to be located in/on’ in English. Although 있다 is typically used in the form of ‘N이/가 N(place)에 있다’, the order of the subject and place in the sentence can be changed with no change in meaning: ‘N(place)에 N이/가 있다.’ The opposite of 있다 is 없다. When ‘N에 있다’ expresses a place, the following location nouns can be used.
2. 있다 is also used in form of ‘N이/가 있다’ to express possession, meaning ‘to have’ the English. The opposite of 있다 is 없다.
· 나는 언나가 있여요. 동생이 없어요.
I have an older sister. I don’t have a younger sibling.
· 자전거가 있어요. 차가 없어요.
I have a bicycle. I don’t have a car.
In Conversation:
A 책이 어디에 있어요? A Where is the book?
B 가방 안에 있어요. B It’s in my bag.
A 은행이 어디에 있어요? A Where is the bank?
B 학교 옆에 있어요. B It’s next to the school.
A 한국 친구가 있어요? A Do you have any Korean friends?
B 네, 난국 친구가 있어요. B Yes, I have Korean friends.
A 컼퓨터가 있어요? A Do you have a computer?
B 네, 있어요. B Yes, I have one.
