Types of Sentences:
1. Declarative
2. Interrogative
3. Imperative and
4. Suggestive
To make such types of sentences, add a terminative ending at the stem of verbs and adjectives. There are many forms and formal expressions below.
-(스)ㅂ니다
This is used to explain the fact at present or a fact in general. If there is no final consonant at the end of the stem it combines with ‘-ㅂ니다’. If there is a final consonant at the end of the stem, it combines with ‘-습니다’.
오다 : 오 + ㅂ니다 → 옵니다
받다 : 받 + 습니다 → 받습니다
Example:
학교에 갑니다. I am going to school.
친구를 만납니다. I am meeting my friend.
아이가 밥들 먹습니다. The child is eating a meal.
-(스)ㅂ니까?
This is used for asking questions. It there is no final consonant at the end of the stem, it combines with ‘-ㅂ니까’. If there is a final consonant at the end of the stem, it combines with ‘-습니까’.
사다 : 사 + ㅂ니까 → 삽니까?
먹다 : 먹 + 습니까 → 먹습니까?
Example:
어디에 갑니까? Where are you going?
무엇을 마십니까? What do you drink?
신문을 읽습니까? Do you read a newspaper?
