Author's note: Just a quick refrence, the sorting hat song and most of Umbridge's speech is found in Order of the Pheonix, american edition, not my words, just borrowing Miss Rowling's beautiful work! Enjoy!

Chapter four: There’s always a first

Alison, Ginny, and Colin stepped out of the carriage at the base of the stone steps. The front doors were thrown wide open spilling light out onto the grounds. The entrance hall had a few students in it, still making their way into the Great Hall. The four hour glasses stood empty of stones, waiting to start a new year.

Professor McGonagall stepped into the entrance hall. “Hurry along now, to your seats!” she called out to the students. They picked up their pace as they entered the Great Hall, it was decorated as always, the tables set with golden plates, empty of food, and hundreds of floating candles above their heads. The Gryffindor table was the last one in the hall. The three of them made their way to it. Halfway down sat Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Harry lifted a hand to them, waving them over to the seats he had saved. Just as they sat down, Professor McGonagall entered the hall followed by a train of timid looking first years.

McGonagall led the students all the way to the front of the hall where she placed a three legged stool and on top of it, the famous Sorting Hat. “I wonder what he’ll sing about this year.” whispered Colin as the hall sat in silence waiting for the hat to begin.

After only a moment’s hesitation a wipe rip near the brim of the hat opened, and the hat began its song:

In times of old, when I was new,

And Hogwarts barely started,

the founders of our noble school

thought never to be parted.

United by a common goal,

they had the selfsame yearning

to make the world's best magic school

and pass along their learning.

"Together we will build and teach"

The four good friends decided.

And never did they dream that they

Might someday be divided.

For were there such friends anywhere

As Slytherin and Gryffindor?

Unless it was the second pair

Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw,

So how could it have gone so wrong?

How could such friendships fail?

Why, I was there, so I can tell

the whole sad, sorry tale.

Said Slytherin, "We'll teach just those

whose ancestry's purest."

Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose

Intelligence is surest."

Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those

with brave deeds to their name."

Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot

and treat them just the same."

These differences caused little strife

when first they came to light.
