Chapter 46 Quiet Times

Start from the beginning

"Leah, I'm sorry." His words draw my eyes and I can see that he looks hurt... I don't blame him.

"No... It was me... Jacob just... We didn't..." I draw in a shaky lungful of air, immediately feeling regret for bringing him up. "It takes me a long time to get used to something new... Okay?"

"Okay."

"I'm so pathetic." I try to ease the situation by giggling a little and trying to make light of the situation.

"No, no you're not. You're cautious. And after want you've been through I don't blame you. You are a beautiful mess."

I roll my eyes at him.

"We aren't going to argue, now, tell me about Gordi."

Half an hour later I'm serving him toast and tea and he bears it like a champion when I apologize for not having coffee. "You know," he looks thoughtful as I sit across from him at the tiny table.

"What?"

"This is the calmest I think it's been between us... Ever."

"Funny, I was thinking the same thing." I smile, holding my tea cup in front of my face.

"So..." He looks at his phone, "flight is at 10:20 tomorrow morning... What would you like to do for the rest of the day?"

"Visit the hospital?" I make a small face and he nods in agreement. "And... Maybe I need to go grocery shopping..."

"You want to be out in public with me?" He looks amused and a smile plays over his face.

"Well, I think it's safe to say people know we are friends."

"True, we are that." I jump a bit as Hunter's hand slides over my knee.

"And... Um..." I can tell Hunter enjoys watching me squirm due to his influence. "Could you please not?"

"Oh." He removes his hand and I try to regain some composure. What's happening? I used to be so calm around him, he used to be safe.
Now he's outside of my comfort zone again and it's bugging me.

"I think you could borrow some clothes from Sam.. They may be a bit big."

"I'll ask." He smiles as he slips out of his chair and leaves the room with a wink and a smile.

I quickly shower and braid my still wet hair, contemplating the day with little enthusiasm, it's already well past 3 and I don't feel like doing much anyway. The light blue sweater I tug over my head is too big and really worn but I don't care it's soft and warm and the same thing goes for my old fur lined snow boots. "I know I look awful but I'm telling you right now I don't care and if you really want to be involved with me you'd better not mind." I inform Hunter as I shove my boots on in the entry way. I can't stop the teasing in my voice, it just came out.

"I also look quite bla today... Something about no coffee, no way to do your hair properly, and flying across the country to save your relationship seems to take a lot out of a person." Hunter laughs and I look up at him.

Same stupid black hat but he's wearing one of Sam's button up red flannels under his heavy jacket and the aftershave smell that wafts down is defiantly not Hunter's usual smell but one of Tiffany's favorite colognes that Sam refuses to wear.

"We both look half dead and hideous, let's go." I laugh as Hunter pulls me off of the floor. "Could we maybe rent a movie or something for tonight? I'm feeling like popcorn."

"And being held close in the dark?" Hunter grins as I buckle my seatbelt.

"... Maybe a game instead."
