To Wait

You waited 'til my ninth birthday

Just for me to take you home

Although you were so scared at first

You learned the house was yours to roam

You waited for me after school

And sometimes even practice too

I'd find you laying on my bed—

Always with the door in view

You waited every trip we took

For me to come back to the house

While you were grumpy I had left

You tailed me like you would a mouse

You waited while I stayed in dorms

For me to visit when I could

You'd search for me both high and low—

How could you know it'd do no good?

But now I guess it is my turn

To spend my life waiting for you

How cruel it is to feel your pain

Now that there's nothing I can do
