Edo took a shard of obsidian and sliced the first button off Emily's khaki shirt.

"EDO! YOU TOUCH MY DAUGHTER AND I'LL KILL YOU!"

Edo laughed, gleefully making another cut. "You can't reach me, Jones. And you can't drag me out on to the obsidian with your whip... or it will crack. You have no weapon that can kill at a distance. And -" he smiled. "With the spilling of blood, the knowing ones will have gained enough power to see the swords."

"Dad!" Emily called. "I'm all right, Dad!"

Indy fought back tears. "Em," he whispered, fighting memories of Nanking and the horrific inhumane destruction Edo's men had inflicted on the women and children. "Em, my beautiful precious girl... You have no idea. You have no idea how they can hurt you."

She locked eyes with her father. "But they haven't yet."

Edo laughed. "Miss Jones - your father was there. He walked into the city of Nanking days after we -"

Lizavet screamed.

Edo drew close to her. "You see the glory of it..."

Lizavet's dark eyes locked into the evil encased in Edo's infected soul. "I see the corpses of your victims rising up to meet you from the underworld of Diya! You will seek everything! Gain nothing! And you and your men are damned to wander as hungry ghosts - never fulfilled - always in agony - never getting what you so wickedly desire! At the end of time - your victims from Nanking will judge you and show you the mercy that you showed them! Which was nothing! They will cheer as you are struck down and thrown into a lake of fire like the one you are going to try to throw me into!"

"Chiba!" Edo ordered. "Tie her to the sacrifice stone!"

Chiba moved, gripping Lizavet by the waist, crushing her ribs, shoving Shorty out of the way.

Indy watched as the apkallu sucked Shorty back into memories from the Temple of Doom, turning the young man into a helpless child. "C'mon, Shorty - you know. You can resist this!"

Shorty dropped to the ground, stunned and frozen in place - his eyes wide as if he was seeing and reliving something forgotten and which was now in his face and he was unable to resist or fight back.

But Lizavet shouted onward against the darkness, unstoppable. "Knowing Ones! I am not afraid of your lackey, Edo! The women and children he tortured and slaughtered will rise from the pit of ten thousand corpses! Your strongman brags and built his falsified mighty warrior reputation on the sacrifice of women and children." Her eyes darkened as Chiba tied her against the center standing stone, still shouting. "Edo, I have faced your dehumanizing evil... and I have won! You and your men can do nothing to a woman who has no fear!"

"EM! RUN!" Indy ordered, his voice breaking.
