19-year-old Gwendolyn Shafer hasn't always been on the thicker side and when thin seems to be "in" she struggles to embrace the weight she's put on since losing her mother. She finds comfort in hiding her shape underneath oversized clothes but occasionally dresses up to build her confidence. Dating hasn't been on her roster of things to do but she lives vicariously through her best friend who's a bit more confident in the skin she's in and always has a story to tell.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Akari Jeffers is living in his car after recently leaving his problematic ex-girlfriend. He works a full-time job as a car washer and does some jobs on the side such as painting people's homes and cutting grass. However, his goal has always been to be a professional artist. He's worked side jobs for Gwendolyn's grandmother for the past year but his interaction has mostly always been with her grandmother. It isn't until Gwendolyn finds Akari clinging to life on their doorstep one night that both of their lives would change.
