My story was inspired by all the awesome music I listen to – and wanting to write a story I wanted to read about being a girl in a band in the 1990s.
2 what is something you struggled constructing with your story?
I think initially I didn't want the story to be romantic – I wanted to look at how tough and sexist the music industry in the 90s was and how that would impact a young woman with talent who wanted to break down the barriers – but that didn't happen! It was easier and more fun to write a cute, light-hearted but still realistic rom-com type story.
3 what did you enjoy writing most of your story?
I loved bringing in Australian slang – the three girls who form Slider, the band the story revolves around, are all Australian, who all speak very differently. Meg uses a lot more slang terms, whereas Ellie is a bit more direct, and Kim speaks in a more educated way. Then I added in all of the British slang and it became this fun exercise to ensure I was using the right words! And I hope it makes it fun to read as well!
4 what's the overall response of your story from your readers?
Readers are surprised that there's a book on Wattpad that is pretty different to everything else, that's not too cheesy, or too full on, but it's an easy and fun read! Most of the comments are about how cool it is to read the Aussie accent with so many Aussie references!
5 is your story a stand alone novel or a piece of a series ?
I'm currently writing the second book in the series – and I think there will be plenty more! I just need to find the time to write them...argh!
6 what would you like your readers to take away from your story?
Most of all, I want readers to know that it's okay to be yourself – Ellie Devine, my main character, really highlights just how important it is to be true to yourself and your dreams. I also want everyone to know that the world isn't full of 'bad boys' and mafia men, but there really are some genuinely decent guys with big hearts!
7 what advice would you provide to fellow writers, when it comes to focusing on their own story?
My advice would be that if you can write the book you want to read, you can't go wrong! When you're in love with your characters and story, and you want more as a writer, then it's a no brainer that others will fall in love with it too! What's also important is that you write to make yourself happy, not other people – write what you love!
8 does your main character share any similarities to yourself?
Ellie Devine is very driven. If she wants something, she'll get it. At least she'll try her hardest and never give up. She can also get pretty obsessed with things (people in particular) and maybe needs to take a chill pill sometimes. Haha!
9 what is something about your story you believe would draw in new readers?
My story is full of cute moments with friends, cute moments with hot musicians and cute moments that are pretty different to anything on Wattpad. If you're willing to read a story that's quirky, fun and fast-paced with lots of hot guys – dive right in!
10 do you have any future projects?
Yes! While I'm finishing the second story in the Slider series (Ellie Devine Rock Star – check it out on my profile) I'm also working on a book called Ava J & The Regrets. For me personally, there was something missing from Daisy Jones & The Six that I couldn't quite work out so I figured, what the hell, I'll write my own. Ava J & The Regrets is pretty dark though, and really does go deep into the psychology of fame – think about the 27 Club and how the vulnerable, talented ones get there.
