Chapter 1

I wake to a gentle knocking at my door. "Come in,dusk." I say, sitting up in bed. She opens the door quietly "morning." I say "morning." She giggles at me and points at the clock, looking all serious. I look at it, 8:30, shoot! "I have to make him his breakfast!" I say and bolt up and out of my bedroom, wearing a white tank top and grey sweat pants. I climb down the stairs and head to the kitchen. I hear a yawn in front of me before I turn the corner. He grumbles. How is he awake already!?! I sigh and round the corner "what took you so long?" He growls "I'm sorry, daddy." I say to him as I take out a pan and 2 eggs. I crack them on the pan and I turn on the burner. When his sunny side up eggs are done, I put them on a plate and I give it to him with a fork. I open the fridge and I pour him a glass of orange juice. I set it next to his plate just as he puts his fork in his mouth, tastes the eggs, and spits them out. Growling, he gets up. "Those taste terrible!" He slaps me hard, and I stumble backwards, falling to the ground. "I-I'm sorry daddy!" I scream as he storms over to me and grabs my hair, and yanks me to my feet "I feed you! Give you a roof over your head! And you repay me how? By making me terrible eggs and killing my wife! I no you caused the fire! You and your devil sister!" He growls and throws me to the ground. Then he kicks my gut. I try to hold back my tears, he didn't deserve to see me cry. He kicked me hard, 2 more times, then I started to cry. "Oh, is little dawn crying?" He laughed and kicked me more. He finally stopped and picked up a knife and yanked me to my feet by my hair "daddy, I'm sorry!" I cry "I'll teach you to be sorry." He said, he started the blade at the crook of my elbow and ended at my wrist. He did it for both my arms then put the knife in the sink. "Go. Don't disappoint me again." He snarls and marches up the stairs. I slowly walk upstairs and into the bathroom. I poured alcohol on it, to keep it clean of infection. I grimaced at the pain it caused whilst it cleaned. When it's clean I knock on dusk's door. She opened immediately and pulled me to sit on her bed. "How bad?" She asked and I showed her my arms "Let's go to church?" She suggests. I nod and we walk downstairs and out the door. We get in my pink mustang and I drive towards the church. When we get out we walk inside and sit in 2 chairs that were close to the stage. A preacher came up and announced "today, we will have a concert. To honor those who have fallen for us and their loved ones." He says as a man steps onto the stage, with a guitar. He had dirty blonde hair and intense green eyes.he started strumming his guitar. He sang the anthem. He looked at me and his eyes locked with mine. He sang as he stared at me. When he finished, he stood and said "that will be all for today's service. Thank you." I stand and I lead dusk out. "What do you want for lunch?" I ask her "Dairy Queen?" I nod As we walk to it. I order our food and we sit at a table. She looks out the window and I stare at my hands. The little bell at the door rings and I see the guitarist. I look back at my hands and I hope he doesn't notice us, but he does. A lady brings us our food and he walks behind a booth, out of my view. We eat in silence. When we finish, we throw our trash away, and she walks out to the car. I sit at our table, with my head in my hands. Now we will have to go back to our father. The smell of peppermint and pine needles hit me hard as I look up to see him. He was standing next to me, but not touching me. "Hello." He said "hi." I reply flashing him a smile. "I saw you in the church, earlier." He said, and sat in front of me. "Yeah. We go there a lot to get away from..." Was I really about to tell a stranger about me? I have built up walls. No one comes in but dusk. And he almost slipped past. "I'm Jason, by the way." He said "Dawn." I reply. "Pretty name." I nod in acknowledgement. My wolf howled with delight. Why is she so excited.
