*Alyssa's p.o.v*
"Hello?" I questioned
"Hello. Is this Miss Smith?" The voice asked me
"Technically, but I'm Alyssa Irwin now, not Smith," I replied
"Are you the daughter of Alex Smith?" The voice said
"Yes. Can I ask who's calling?" I said, my confusion growing
"This is California General Hospital. Your father has been in an accident."

"What? What's happened?!" I cried, my worry rising. I could see Luke out of the corner of my eye, trying to find out what was wrong.
"Yes, I'm afraid to tell you that your father was in a car accident last night," the woman on the other end said
"Is he okay?" I questioned
"It's too soon to tell," the woman said. "He was rushed into intensive care as soon as he arrived"
"Can I see him?" I asked, running a hand through my hair
"Well he has to have surgery, but as soon as he is in recovery, you'll be able to see him," the woman replied
"Okay, thank you," I said, and hung up the phone.

"What was that?" Luke asked, worriedly
"It's... It's my dad... He was in an accident," I choked, tears running down my face.
"Oh Alyssa, come here," Luke said, holding his arms open. And in that moment, I forgot about all the drama, and fell into his open arms. They wrapped tightly around my waist, and I rested my head on his chest, hearing the beat of his heart.

"I have to go see him," I said, pulling away from Luke
"Of course you do. I'll come with you," Luke replied, as we started off home.
"No, Luke it's fine, I can go by myself," I said, hurrying down the street
"Look, let me come with you," Luke argued
"No. We still haven't sorted things out between us, and I just need to see my dad, okay?" I said, opening the front door to my house
"Okay, if you're sure," Luke replied, stopping at the door
"Look, I'll call you okay?" I said, and entered my house, shutting the door behind me, leaving Luke outside.

"Hey, how did it go?" Ashton asked, walking into the hall. He came closer, seeing the tears on my face. "I take it not well?"
"No, is not that. We didn't even get around to talking," I said, hurrying upstairs
"So what's the matter?" Ashton asked in concern, chasing me up the stairs
"I got a call from the hospital in California, saying that my dad had been in a car accident," I said, tears running down my face as I pulled my Lonsdale sport bag from under the bed.
"Oh my god, is he okay?" Ashton asked worriedly
"I don't know, he's in intensive care and has to have surgery," I said, packing haphazardly
"So you're going to see him?" Ashton asked
"Yeah," I replied, grabbing my toothbrush and paste from the bathroom.
"Let me come with you?" Ashton offered
"No, it's fine. Luke already offered but you guys need to stay here; rehearse and stuff," I replied, zipping up my bag
"Family comes before the band," Ashton said firmly
"No, honestly, I'll be fine by myself," I said, grabbing my bag and starting downstairs
"At least let me drive you to the airport?" Ashton offered
"Okay," I replied, and the two of us set off so I could catch the next flight into California.

'Attention passengers. We will shortly be landing in California, so please fasten your seat belts,' a voice said over the intercom. Luckily for me, when we arrived at the airport, a flight to Cali was leaving in 25 minutes, so I managed to get onto that. The flight had been terrible; I was so nervous that I couldn't sit still. I decided to use my sports bag as a carry on, as it meant I didn't have to wait around at baggage claim when we landed. 10 minutes later, and the plane had landed on the runway. I quickly exited the plane and hurried through the airport. I stepped out into the bright sunshine, the place I used to call home. I hailed a taxi, and drove straight to the hospital.

I was out of the cab before it even stopped, tossing my money to the guy, telling him to keep the change. I practically ran into the hospital and up to the front desk.
"Hi. How can I help?" The woman behind the desk asked, smiling at me
"Hi. Is Alex Smith out of surgery yet please?" I asked, quickly returning her smile
"No, but you can wait in the waiting room until he's in recovery if you wish?" The woman replied, pointing to the area of chairs behind me.
"Okay, thank you," I replied, and took a seat in one of the chairs, exhausted.

A half hour later, the woman at the desk was talking on the hospital phone. She hung up and looked at me, beckoning me over.
"Your father has just got out of surgery," she informed me
"Is he okay?" I asked, half relieved, half worried
"We think that he should be, but it is a little soon to tell," the woman replied
"Can I see him?" I asked
"Of course, he's currently in recovery. He'll probably still be very groggy and out of it. His room is just down the hall, B-26" the woman replied
"Okay, thank you," I smiled, and headed off to where she was pointing.

I opened the door to Room B-26. My dad was lying on a bed, his eyes closed. A heartbeat monitor was next to him, beating consistently.
"Oh daddy," I sighed, gently resting my hand on his arm. His eyes fluttered open and he looked at me.
"Alyssa? Is that you?" He asked, his eyes still half closed
"Yeah, daddy. It's me," I smiled at him.
"Alyssa, I want you to know something..."

And that's when the heartbeat monitor beat in one consecutive line.
