The rest of the week passed very quickly. After getting your back-to-school dress you hadn't gone anywhere besides school and straight home. Your father had Wednesdays and Thursdays off and wouldn't have had it any other way. He was indignant and overbearing, when he had a few drinks in him, he was downright terrifying. The dance would have definitely been off the table, but thankfully that was on a Friday so he would never know so long as you were home by eleven.

You stole a few glances of Jughead while in English or passing in the halls, but he had never spoke to you again until that Friday morning. It was right after the class discussion on 1984. Mrs. Shea called on everyone regardless of whether they wished to speak. Luckily 1984 was one of your favorite books so you had been quite prepared.

He slid into an empty desk beside you during independent reading and leaned over. "It seems like you were the only person besides me who actually read the book." He smiled causing a quiver of butterflies to erupt in your stomach.

"Yeah." You smiled unsure of what to say, while you fiddled with a pencil nervously.

"We're playing They Live at the drive-in Saturday night. I thought you may be interested."

"You work at the drive-in?"

"Yeah. I'm a bit of a cinephile, and an admirer of cars."

"I-"

Mrs. Shea cleared her throat loudly. "No talking!"

Jughead gave you an adorable sideways grin while he opened his copy of the new book the class had been assigned, Hamlet.

...

You tried to have fun at the dance, but you just felt completely out of place. You wore a formal black and silver gown that was high cut in the front of your legs and draped lower in the back. No one had asked you to dance, which you were grateful for as there was only guy you wanted to dance with, yet it was a bit sullen just standing in a corner or sitting at a table throughout the event. Veronica had tried to drag you onto the dance floor with her during an upbeat song but you had no idea what you were doing and had soon found your way back to your seat. It seemed that Betty kept giving you the evil eye throughout the night. Archie seemed nice enough, although he was clearly enjoying juggling the attentions of two women. Still, when Veronica and Betty made a trip to the ladies' room you took it as an opportunity to speak to him.

"So, the other day Betty mentioned something about how you and Jughead are not talking. Are you or were you guys friends?" You bit your lip hoping you didn't seem too obvious. "He is in my English class and seems like a nice guy."

Archie scratched his head. "Yeah, Jughead is cool, we've been friends a long time. Had a bit of a falling out over the summer though."

"Oh. So, I guess he didn't come to homecoming." You looked around wistfully.

Archie laughed. "Yeah, I wouldn't expect to see him at an event like this anytime soon. Why are you asking about him?"

"Oh, I-"

"You guys we just got invited to an afterparty at Thornhill

"You guys we just got invited to an afterparty at Thornhill." Veronica interrupted excitedly. Betty looked reluctant, while Archie looked confused. "You guys! We are so going!"
