but mark didn't listen. he shoot up and ran out of the trauma room. he need to be by his side.
he found her in the room next to him.
she was barely awake.
"mark? my husband? where is he? is he dead?" gwen asks looking between the doctors.
mark wanted to walk over to her but a resident hold him back.
"you can't be in here, sir." he tells mark who tried to push past him.
"no, this is my wife! i have a right to see her!" mark yells.
then suddenly gwen's heart stopped making his heart sank.

"charge to 200!"

callie slept in gwen room.
it's now one week since they got transfered back to seattle and gwen hasn't woken up since.
"callie? callie?" derek whispers making her awake. "go home."
"no, i'm all right." callie shoke her head.
"no, you're not." derek says stepping into the room. "you've been up for the past two nights bouncing between arizona's room and here."
"i just need some coffee." callie sighs rubbing her eyes. "can you, um... can you stay with her while i run to the cafeteria?"
"i'll stay with her all night." derek assures her.
"i just feel like we're losing her, derek. usually when i talk to her, i sense that she's there, that she's listening, but i think she's giving up." she sighs. "i'm so scared the second i leave this hospital, i'm gonna get a phone call that she's dead."
"that's not gonne happen tonight." derek assures her.
"promise?"
derek nods. "if she starts going south, i'll tell her to cut it out. she idolizes me. she'll do whatever i say."
callie nods, squeezing gwen's hand before leaving the room.
"you heard what i told her. don't make me look like an ass. pull it together. a lot of people counting on you." derek tells his sister when mark entered the room. "where have you been?"
"i just put hailey to sleep." mark replies. "she always asks for her mama. i don't know what i do when she dies."
"she won't die. gwen isn't someone who gives up easily." derek reminds him.
"that's more than true." mark laughs. "do mind staying with her? i want to go home and take a shower."
"no, go. i'm staying." derek assures him.
mark kissed her cheek before leaving.

callie ran down the hall in her pyjamas after she got a call from derek. it's gwen and it's urgent.
"damn it. i knew i shouldn't have gone home. is she okay? did she code?" callie asks derek who stood there waiting for her.
"just come see." he says guiding her to the room.
"oh, god. where the hell is mark?" she asks. "derek, tell me what's going on."
but before he could answer they arrived in gwen's room.
callie couldn't believe her eyes.
there she sat with open eyes upright in her bed smiling at her.
"torres. where you been?" gwen asks.
callie looked at mark next to gwen's bed.
"it's crazy isn't it?" he asks kissing his wife.

"pretty amazing recovery, right?" jackson asks as he and a few other doctors watched mark and gwen.
"yeah. her stats are good?" derek asks smiling widely at the fact that his sister is okay. "she's being weaned off pressors?"
"yeah, b.p. is 110 over 60." jackson replies.
"and she's making inappropriate sexual comments to mark." callie chuckles before walking into gwen's room.
"you think it's the surge." derek states looking at richard.
"mmm. it might be." richard answers.
"i don't think it is." derek shoke his head looking at gwen.
"what's the surge?" brooks, one of the new interns, asks the attendings.
"in many terminally ill patients, they have a final surge of energy." richard explains. "they get better before they get worse."
"but this is not that." jackson shoke his head.
"but in a while, she'll do what all patients do. she'll have epiphanies, she'll tell you what really matters in life, ask for her family." richard says.
"it's not a surge." derek states.

"it's not your fault. you didn't force her to try your approach." gwen tells her brother after a fellow neurosurgeon failed a surgery. "if she couldn't pull it off, well, then..."
"i could've pulled it off had i been in there." derek protests.
"well, you'll be back in there." gwen assures him.
"no, i won't." derek shoke his head walking up and down in the room. "i will be the former neurosurgeon, derek shepherd, research librarian."
"shut up." gwen told him.
"gwen, the guy gave me 80%." derek reminds her frustrated.
"well, get back to 100%." gwen retorts.
"it's not gonna happen."
"don't give me that crap. you love a hopeless case." gwen says.
"it's true. it's the only reason mark and i are still friends." derek chuckles. "i'm glad you're doing better."
"me, too." gwen smiles. "you will be, too. 100% you'll see."
derek kissed gwen's forehead before leaving the room.

"hey, i just wanted to see how you're doing." callie informs gwen as she entered the room.
"i'm great but how are you? how's arizona?" gwen asks.
"it's complicated. she wants to keep her leg but i don't know if it's possible." callie sighs sitting on the edge of the bed.
"you're a great surgeon. i know you will save her wether it's with the leg or not." gwen assures her friend.
callie nodded as they smiled at each other.
"can you promise something?" gwen suddenly asks.
"what?"
"if i don't make this-"
"stop. you're not gonna spoke anymore. you will get through this. you will get old with mark and you will see hailey growing up. so just shut up about dying! you're my best friend on this earth and i can't live when you're not there to keep me sane." callie slightly yells at gwen.
"okay." gwen nods. "i love you."
"i love you too." callie smiles as they hugged.
"i won't leave you alone. i promise." gwen assures her.

mark lay next to a sleeping gwen in her bed stroking her tiny cheek.
he couldn't be happier that she is fine now.
derek told him that richard thinks it's the surge but mark didn't believe it.
gwen is strong, he knew it.
gwen face twitched before she opened her eyes to look at him.
"did you watch me sleeping?" she asks adjusting her eyes to the light. "that's creepy."
"i couldn't resist. you look so pretty." mark chuckles brushing hair out of her face.
suddenly mark eyes filled with tears making gwen frown.
"hey, what's wrong?" she asks him wipping the tears away.
"i almost lost you. i saw you dying. the way you screamed out there is hunting me." mark confesses.
"i'm here. i stay. i'm not going anywhere except home with you and hailey." gwen assures him.
"i can't lose you. i lost you so often. with addison, the car crash, the shooting, now this. you can't do this to me anymore okay?" he begs.
"i promise." gwen says kissing him. "i love you so much."
"i love you more." mark says.
"i want to see hailey." gwen blurts. "why don't you run up to day care and bring her down here?"
"i can't bring a baby in the i.c.u." mark reminds her.
"no, but you can sneak one in." gwen retorts. "come on, mark. grow a pair. you know what? forget it. i'll do it."
gwen wanted to stand up but mark hold her back.
"whoa. no, no, no. all right. i'll get her. just stay here. promise?" mark asks not wanting gwen to hurt herself.
"promise." gwen smiles as mark walked out of the room. "my man!"
then she breathed out deeply collapsing back in the pillow. she breath heavily as she saw richard approaching.
"is this what i think it is?" gwen asks scared.
"there's no way to know." richard replies. "we'll just take it as it comes. okay?"
"don't tell callie. she's about to operate on derek." gwen tells richard as he put an oxygen hose in her nose so she could breath better.
"okay." richard nods.
"derek doesn't need to go in this surgery worried, so don't say anything to him." gwen adds.
"they can reschedule the surgery, gwendolyn." richard reminds her. "i'm sure they'd want to."
"no." gwen shoke her head feeling weaker. "that surgery's gonna get my brother back into the o.r where he belongs."
richard sat down listening to gwen.
"nobody's got better hands than him, except maybe callie. have you looked at her hands? they're beautiful. sofia has her hands." gwen exhaled deeply. "callie.. really doesn't know how good she is. sometimes you wish people would just see themselves the way you do. and mark is a good father. please tell him that if i don't make it. tell him this every day. he needs it. he needs the encouragement. he thinks of himself so low sometimes altough he is the best man i know. he is so great." gwen got tears into his eyes thinking about him and callie and derek. "listen to me. this is surge talking?"
"no, this is you. this is all you." richard said heartbreaking to see gwen that scared. "so keep going 'cause i'm not going anywhere."
gwen nodded tears falling out of her eyes.
¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤
after gwen filled out her dnr with richard she lay in bed.
30 days. if there's no change till then, then she wants to let go.
"promise you won't tell mark about this. he would just trying to convince me to burn this paper." gwen begs richard.
"this is all medical confidentiality. he won't know one thing unless you tell him." richard assures her.
gwen then just lay on her side. looking at richard feeling weaker and weaker.
suddenly her heart stopped and the monitors began to beep rapidly.
"crash cart!" richard yells.
just in this moment mark walked back into the room with hailey on his hip to see gwen getting shocked by richard.
"clear!"
"no, no, no. what happened?!" mark asks but didn't get an answer.
he just watch gwen getting intubated.
"don't die. don't die. please, don't die." mark whispers pushinh hailey's face into his chest so she couldn't see anything from that.
the next chapter will be in the present again.
