“Were you prepared to testify against the Police Chief and verify the coded information?”
“Erm.”
“Are you not in fear for your life?” asked With.
“Well I wasn’t before you two turned up and told me Charles was dead. Now I think I’ll pack my bags and take a cruise somewhere.”
“Where?” asked Lee.
“I’m not telling anyone so they can’t get me.”
“What about the tape?”
“You can take it,” she handed it to Lee.
“It’s a bit useless without your testimony.”
“Sorry,” she said as she got up and walked to her dressing room.
“You see that’s the problem,” said Lee, “if the Author doesn’t plan things properly then we will lose witnesses.”
“We could have offered to put her on the witness protection programme. Then she could get lost in the anonymity of another American city.”
“You tell her.”
“What?”
“To get lost.”
With wrinkled his nose as he got up and pushed his chair under the table.
They both left the Lizard Lounge.
