y/n was a timid ghoulette. she was the second ever water ghoulette to be summoned for the band, but there was already a bassist for this generation—so why summon her?
she didn't speak to anyone but copia, and even then it was quiet mumbles and one word answers. she didn't feel like she belonged. the other water ghoul, rain, didn't try speak to her, he was always talking with the fire ghoul and the earth ghoul. sometimes multi, but that was only when they thought they were alone.
of course they didn't see her, she was invisible to everyone—even the other ghoulettes.
maybe she pushed them away. she didn't want to get attached.
"y/n, would you like to start pinnacle?" copia asked. you looked up from your shimmery black bass, glancing at rain. he was already looking at you, giving you a nod.
"um.. okay.." you mumbled, nodding. "perfect." copia smiled, nodding at the earth ghoul to start a gentle metronome.
you started easily, making sure not to look up at any of the ghouls or papa as you played.
you'd trip over yourself and mess up the song, which would make everyone mad at you. how embarrassing would that be? your first time starting a song and you fuck it up.
they'd probably talk about you, the other ghouls. you'd go to your room and they'd laugh at you.
fuck, shut up.. you thought to yourself. you know they wouldn't do that. they tried being nice but you were too fucking shy to answer.
you knew your mind wanted to go on, but both it and your playing was cut off as you cut yourself on one of your sharper frets.
you hissed, quickly turning the volume to your bass off as you looked at your ring finger.
nobody noticed that there was one less layer to the bass part of the song, seeing as rain was playing the same part as you.
you stared at the blood seeping from your finger before you shook your hand out, putting your bass down and slipping out of the practice room, hoping nobody noticed.
"fucking hell.." you grumbled, pulling your sleeve down and putting it over the cut on your finger, applying pressure so it wouldn't bleed as much.
rain watched as you quickly put your bass down and left the practice room while cradling your hand. he turned up the volume to his bass so nobody would stop the song due to the lack of the lower strings. he didn't want to run this song again.
"that was perfect!" copia smiled, putting his mic into the stand as rain set his bass on the stand, slipping out of the room to go looking for you.
he tracked your scent, ending up at the kitchens.
rain slowly walked in, looking around as he stepped carefully as to not startle you. the water ghoul made it to the back where the dishwashing station and storage was, finding you wrapping your finger.
"are you okay?" rain asked. you jumped, turning around quickly. your tail was rigid as your shoulders were slightly raised. "sorry- i'm sorry.." rain raised his hands up, showing he meant to harm to you.
you stared at him for a moment before forcing yourself to relax, having to restart the whole process of fixing your finger, seeing as the band aid you had gotten wasn't the right size.
"do you want help?" rain asked, shuffling over. you paused as you ran your finger under water, slowly looking over at the older water ghoul.
i have no idea what i'm doing.. you thought to yourself.
you nodded, though it was barely noticeable.
rain smiled softly, gently taking hold of your hand and pressing a certain spot on your wrist which made all your muscles completely relax.
rain grabbed a bottle that had words on it, but you couldn't read them. he slowly took your hand out from under the water and poured the clear liquid from the bottle over your cut.
you hissed as a sharp burning sensation started in your fingertip, trying to pull away from rain.
"shh, shh, it's okay. this is cleaning your cut. i promise it's okay." rain whispered, barely tightening his grip on your wrist so you couldn't get away.
as soon as you tried to relax yourself, rain stopped pouring the burning liquid, setting it on the counter before getting and towel and drying off your hand.
"the bleeding stopped," rain smiled softly, getting a bandaid that was the right size and putting it on your finger tip before ripping some gauze and wrapping your finger some more.
you watched rain easily work on your finger, his hold on you extremely gentle before he grabbed another bottle of clear liquid. you shuffled away, not wanting to feel the same burning anymore.
rain laughed softly, pressing on the top of the bottle, making foam come out. he ran the sink water again, washing his hands under it to rid of the small amount of your blood on his hands.
"that's hydrogen peroxide and this is soap, y/n. it's okay." rain chuckled, turning off the water and drying his hands. you cradled your injured and and nodded shyly, a bit embarrassed that you couldn't read the labels.
"you ready to go back to practice?" rain asked, holding out his hand to you. you stared at his hand, nodding slowly as you carefully place your hand in his, retracting your claws so you wouldn't scratch him.
"FIRST RITUAL OF TOUR, LETS GO!" multi yelled excitedly right next to you, making you flinch slightly. all the other ghouls and ghoulettes laughed at his antics, though you couldn't, due to still being shocked by the volume of his voice.
you picked up your case and your personal bag, staying out of the way so everyone could get off the tour bus before you.
as rain walked by, he smiled at you softly before going back to excitedly talking with fire.
"how are you, cara?" copia asked as you stepped off the bus. you nodded, trying not to let your nerves show.
this was your first ritual ever. normally, newly summoned ghouls played their first ritual in front of the clergy and siblings of sin, not the fan base that the ghost project had accumulated.
yeah, you totally weren't nervous.
"good. our social manager has posted a small teaser about you on our platforms, so the fans know a little about you." copia smiled before walking over to his ghouls who were all talking excitedly.
you followed, barely having a chance to readjust yourself before copia was leading all of the ghouls into the venue.
you kept quiet as you listened to all the ghouls and ghoulettes talk with each other, all of them having their own conversations.
the ghoulettes were talking about how they were going to set up their rooms this tour, earth and quintessence were talking about multi, fire, and rain, and the lastly mentioned three were all talking about what they were going to do on stage this ritual.
what felt like seconds later, the ghouls and ghoulettes were going into separate rooms, copia going into one on his own.
you stood there, not knowing where to go.
"y/n," you heard someone say. you turned around, seeing the stage manager peaking around a corner. "could we borrow you to set up your system? this is your first show, so it'll take longer to get you set." he explained. you nodded, taking your bass out of the case and hiding your personal bag in the case before quickly following the stage manager.
he was right—it took about an hour and a half of troubleshooting before your tech was happy with the sound. the stage manager walked back over, logging all the settings on a piece of paper before smiling at you.
"you ready for your first show?" he asked. you nodded, turning your volume off before handing your bass to your tech who smiled at you before walking off.
"that's good. have any plans with dew, or aether, or rain?" he asked. you stared at him, figuring he was talking about some of the ghouls seeing as he mentioned rain's name.
"what?" he asked, confused by your blank stare. "who's dew and aether?" you asked, your voice quiet. the stage manager's eyes widened.
"you don't know their names?" he asked. you shook your head. "do you know anyone's names?" he continued. "copia and rain." you replied. "anyone in tech?" he asked. you shook your head. his eyes widened.
"wow, okay.." he mumbled. "well, i'm kevin." kevin introduced himself, his hand on his chest, glancing over your shoulder. you turned around, seeing all the ghouls coming on stage with their techs close to them.
"dew is the lead guitarist, aether is rhythm, mountain is on drums, cumulus is keys as well as cirrus, sunshine and swiss are multi, and i assume you know rain since you didn't ask about him." kevin pointed to all the ghouls respectively, you nodding along the entire time.
"thank you.." you mumbled, looking back at him. he shrugged. "i'm surprised you didn't know. you've been here for about 3 months." he chuckled. you nodded, messing with your fingers.
"oh, also," kevin started. you looked up at him. "do you need the set list?" he asked. you hesitated before nodding, not knowing was a set list was. "cool, i'll make sure it gets to you before the show starts." kevin smiled before walking away.
i really know nothing.. you thought to yourself, looking back at all the ghouls, seeing them smiling and laughing happily.
you frowned.
you were sitting in the green room with copia and all the other ghouls, watching them all talk excitedly with each other.
your tail was tucked close to your legs, the spade twitching dramatically every now and then. you tried to hide it, not wanting the other ghouls to see that you were nervous.
they all seemed so confident, you didn't want them to think that you'd ruin the show with your nerves.
"hey, what's her name?" mult—er.. swiss whispered, tapping rain's arm. "seriously?" rain asked. "yeah, man, she never fuckin' talks. how the hell am i s'posed to know her name?" swiss defended himself. "her name is y/n," rain rolled his eyes.
"yo, y/n," swiss called. you looked up, trying not to tense under the stares of all the ghouls. "could you toss me that smart water?" swiss asked, pointing to all the water bottles on the table close to you.
you looked over, seeing a variety of different water bottles, some of them with different labels.
"um.. which one is.. uh-" you were cut off. "the one that says smart water. can't you read?" swiss asked. you froze, your eyes wide as you looked over at him.
"lucifer, be nice, swiss." rain hissed, slapping swiss' arm. "it's the one closest to you, dove." rain told you, standing up and walking over. you nodded, picking up the tall and skinny plastic bottle with a lid that flicked.
"don't listen to him, he's a dick." rain whispered as he reached you, taking the water bottle from you. you nodded, avoiding eye contact so he wouldn't see the tears of embarrassment in your eyes.
rain smiled, placing his hand on your helmet before walking back to the couch.
"she's never left the ministry before, fuckin' asshole." rain growled, tossing the water bottle to the multi-ghoul, making it hit him in the forehead. "damn, sorry for fucking with you and your girlfriend." swiss grumbled, taking the plastic off from the smart water lid before flicking it open.
"she's not my girlfriend," rain stated, sitting down back in his seat. "yeah, cause we all believe you." swiss chuckled. "dude, last time one of us fucked with sunshine you got pissed as hell. i'm watching out for my same type just like you do." rain growled, picking at his nails. dew laughed softly, remembering when swiss went off the walls for a prank he pulled on sunshine.
"prep for showtime, guys," kevin said, peaking into the room.
immediately all the ghouls and copia jumped up, making their way backstage. you stood up, shuffling over to the door. kevin smiled at you, handing you a paper.
"all the songs you're playing tonight and when. it's the same as rain's so if you lose yours just find his." kevin explained as you looked at the paper in your hands. your eyes widened when you realized it was only words. words you couldn't read.
"i gotta go help with some things. let me know if you need anything." kevin told you before walking away.
your hands shook as you stared down at the paper. you didn't know what songs you were playing, much less in what order. copia had made you learn all of ghost's songs—it wasn't like you could guess.
you rushed to where all of the ghouls were, looking around for rain. you spotted him as his tech handed him his bass, the water ghoul looping it over his shoulders.
you rushed over, pulling on rain's sleeve to get his attention.
rain looked over, slightly startled as you shoved your set list into his hands. he opened the folded paper, smiling softly when he saw what it was.
"i was wondering if you got this. but what's up? why are you so panicky?" rain asked, looking at you. "i can't read, rain." you whispered, feeling your stomach twisting in knots. rain's eyes widened.
"are you serious??" rain whispered, placing his hand on your shoulder. you nodded, trying not to cry with the onslaught of anxiety you were feeling.
rain quickly took of his bass, handing it to his tech who had rushed over when he saw the water ghoul take it off.
"hey, it's okay, dove," rain soothed, wrapping his arm around you and walking back to the green room, ignoring all the ghouls as they tried to ask what was wrong.
"what's something that reminds you of kaisarion?" rain asked, looking over at you. "music notes." you said, your knee bouncing. rain raised an eyebrow at you. "it's the sound of another deadline," you quoted. rain, nodded, drawing music notes next to the top word.
"rats?" rain asked, looking at you. you stared at him. "right," he nodded, drawing a rat next to the second word.
this went on for the next 10 minutes, rain laughing at some of the drawings he made. you laughed softly with him, making the older water ghoul smiling at how you were slowly opening up to him.
"okay, this should be good." rain grinned handing you the paper. "tell me which songs are which." he told you. you nodded, looking at the small drawings.
"kaisarion, rats, faith, spillways, devil church, cirice, hunter's moon, ritual, call me little sunshine, con clavi, prime mover, watcher in the sky, year zero, he is, miasma, mary on a cross, mummy dust, dance macabre, square hammer." you listed easily, looking up at rain. the water ghoul grinned happily, hugging you.
"this'll work for now. i'll teach you how to read and it'll get even easier for you." rain whispered, his arms wrapped tightly around you.
you hugged rain back, happy to have opened up to one of the ghouls.
maybe it was so easy because he was a water ghoul too—you didn't care, you had a friend now.
you smiled happily as the ritual ended, the hundreds of thousands of fans screaming loudly making adrenaline rush your system.
you looked to the back of the stage, seeing your tech waving you over. you walked over to them, handing them your bass.
"you were amazing," they complemented. you smiled and nodded gratefully, taking the handful of picks they poured into your clawed hands.
you walked back out to the stage, waving at a fan who was waving at you excitedly.
"WE LOVE YOU ALREADY!" they yelled, reaching out to you. you smiled, tapping a guard on the shoulder. he looked up and you handed him a pick and your set list, pointing at the fan after. he nodded, walking over and handing the items to the fan who was screaming excitedly.
"THANK YOU SO MUCH!!" they screamed. you grinned, walking over a few paces and throwing a pick out to the pit. it barely reached the barrier, but you were happy someone caught it.
"y/n!" you heard from someone on stage. you looked over, seeing rain rushing over to you.
you grinned, backing up from the edge of the stage and hugging rain as soon as he pummeled into you.
you both rocked back and fourth slightly, the older water ghoul pulling away after a moment and cupping your face under the mask. he smiled as he head butted you, making you laugh as the foreheads of your helmets rested together.
"you were amazing, dove." rain whispered, grazing his thumb along your cheekbone. "so were you." you grinned, leaning into his hand. "ready for bows?" he asked. you smiled and nodded.
rain walked you over to the rest of the band, making it so you were in between him and copia.
the fourth papa smiled at you as he took your hand, gently kissing your knuckles. you laughed softly, nodding back to him. you turned to face the crowd when copia did, both him and rain raising your hands above your head before leading you in a bow. you all came back up moments later, only to go down again.
though, when you came up this time, copia grabbed a mic out of seemingly nowhere and stepped forward with you.
"everyone give it up for our newest ghoulette!" copia called, the fans in the venue roaring with cheers. you smiled widely, looking around the crowd and waving at some people who waved at you.
you felt someone take your other hand, making you look over and see rain.
"c'mon," he smiled, guiding you away from copia who was speaking some final words to the crowd. you followed, leaning into the older water ghoul as you both walked backstage.
as soon as you walked by the curtains, your body drained off all the adrenaline and was quickly replaced with exhaustion.
rain watched your shoulders slump and your eyes start to droop, the water ghoul chuckling as he remembered the post-show exhaustion he had for a few months after his first ritual.
"don't worry, you'll get used to it soon." rain told you, his thumb grazing your hand as he walked you to a room you hadn't been in before.
"go ahead and shower, i'll be out here when you're done." rain smiled at you, guiding you to an en suite bathroom. you nodded, seeing your clothes already on the counter.
you yawned as you stepped out of the bathroom, seeing rain sitting on the couch wearing different clothes.
"ready to get back on the bus?" rain asked. you smiled and nodded, letting him guide you through the venue before leading you over to the tour bus and letting you step in first.
you looked up as you reached the level flooring of the bus, seeing dew and swiss looking at you.
your body froze, rain looking over your shoulder to see what made you freak out.
"hey," rain nodded, gently pushing you forward. you cautiously let the water ghoul guide you, only to realize he was taking you to the bunks.
"i swear, as soon as they find a girl they completely disappear." dew scoffed.
"don't listen to him." rain told you, leading you over to a bunk bed built into the wall that had an upside down triangle carved into the separating wood.
"which one do you want?" rain asked, easily changing the topic. "i dunno. i've only ever seen single beds." you stated, looking between the two beds that were vertical of each other.
"how high is your bed?" rain asked. "on the floor." you said casually, looking over at the water ghoul. rain's eyes widened, his jaw dropping. "what?" you asked.
"you don't have a bed frame?" rain countered. "a what?" you mumbled, feeling way more shy now. "y'know, the metal and wood thing that holds your mattress off the ground?" rain offered. you shook your head.
"satanas, y/n," rain exasperated, sitting on the bottom bunk. you sat next to him, scooting back so your back was up against the wall. rain followed your actions, moving to sit closer to you.
"how much are you missing out on?" rain asked. "um.. i can't read, i guess i don't have a bed frame, i didn't know any of the other ghouls and ghoulette's names until earlier tonight.." you trailed off. "seriously?" rain looked at you. you nodded.
"i'm sorry, y/n. we all tried to be nice but it seemed like you didn't want to be friends. i guess now i know you're just extremely shy and timid.." rain mumbled, wrapping his arm around your shoulders. you shrugged. "it's okay. life up here is a lot better than it was in hell." you mumbled, leaning into rain.
rain knew that you had no idea you were dropping bombs on him. you were practically ignored for the entire time you had been on earth and that was better than hell? you couldn't read, that one was new—the clergy never summoned ghouls that couldn't read.
rain paused.
maybe because it was mostly common knowledge.
rain went to ask you more, but cut himself off as he realized you had fallen asleep on his shoulder.
rain smiled softly, resting his head against yours and closing his eyes.
rain wasn't letting you go anytime soon, that was for sure.
