"Congratulations to us!" our glasses made a clinking sound as the fireworks show began.

"Yeah..." I faced Jarvis and smiled. "Can't believe my resort in Palawan has now an international branch!"

We welcomed another New Year with the success of our newly opened resort and I really am happy and proud. But despite that, I couldn't help but to feel sad as I reminisce the previous New Year I celebrated with mama Celestina.

"Why the sullen look?" napatingin ako kay Jarvis na kumportableng nakasandal sa railings ng balkonahe.

Dahil opening ngayon ng resort, maraming tao at ganap dito sa resort. May party na nagaganap ngunit naisipan naming lumayo muna at magtago sa isa sa mga suites.

"I remembered mama," I answered with a sad smile. "I miss her."

He placed the glass he was holding on the table and wrapped an arm on my shoulder. We both watched the fireworks show as the crowd cheered from below. Nasa itaas kami na bahagi ng hotel ngunit maririnig pa rin ang ingay ng mga nagpa-party.

"I'm sure she's proud of you," aniya.

The bright moonbeams outlined his features and even if he's not looking at me, his side view looked good. He probably felt my stares that he faced me too, our noses almost touching.

My heartbeat doubled at the instance our eyes locked with each other but gradually calmed down. It has been like this in the past months. The pounding heartbeat and all those swooping sensations in my stomach feels different.

Instead of feeling all giddy and excited just like how I felt when I first realized that I liked him, I've been... I don't know... feeling calm and ... safe... when he's around.

I know that something's changed but I still couldn't pinpoint on what exactly that is. All I know is that I'm at ease when I'm with him and it feels like my heart's swelling with something I couldn't name.

He took a step nearer and I had to bite my lips at our closeness. I was rooted at the spot and I was waiting for him to distance himself but he only lowered his head, his lips almost touching mine's.

One wrong move and our lips would touch. His hand traveled its way to my nape and I honestly thought he'd kiss me. Instead, he moved his face towards my ear, his nose brushing against my cheek.

"Happy New Year," he whispered, sending shivers down my spine.

"Happy New Year, too," I breathed. "We should go back to the party."

I gently pushed him away and strode towards the door. We walked back to the party in silence, greeting some guests we passed by.

I can't believe I thought he'd kiss me! He's in a relationship, Sugar! I reminded myself.

Know your limits!

I shook my head, trying to shrug all these unnecessary thoughts.

"You okay?" tanong niya na agad ko naman tinanguan.

"Jarvis!" lakad-takbo ang ginawa ng babaeng tumawag kay Jarvis papunta sa amin.

She pecked Jarvis on both cheeks and turned to me with a smile. I wanted to give her a genuine smile but I couldn't help but give her a resentful and bitter one.

Good! Now I look like a jealous girlfriend!

Jarvis introduced us to each other and I found out that she's actually his ex-girlfriend! Jarvis was then called by someone so I was left with Oceanne.

"Don't worry, I don't like him romantically," panimula niya nang makalayo si Jarvis. "He's a good friend."

There's nothing to be worried about since we're not actually together. I thought.
