Julia McCulloch placed two blank place cards in the middle of the desk blotter. She could hear Sam outside raking leaves. She confidentially wrote the name of her daughter on one, Anne Drexler, but then hesitated when she looked at the second blank card.
She tapped her fingers on the edge of the desk and then decided to write the name of Annie's husband on it, Jack Drexler. Maybe Jack would be there for Thanksgiving or maybe not. She would do his card regardless. She knew that Jack really didn't have any other place to go for the holidays, especially with all that had happened to him – even before the separation.
