Chapter 6: School Field Trip

Alaric drives the car, Hope in the passenger seat, Rafael on my left, Lizzie on my right, and me in the middle. Josie stayed home with Jed to help Dorian.

We arrive at a high school. There is yellow tape surrounding the parking lot. Cops walk around talking to students. Some students sit around and crying and hold each other.

Rafael walks in front of me. He must be activating his 'protective big brother plan' "Raf, what's going on?"

Rafael shakes his head. "I-I don't know."

"Dad. What going on? Why are we here? Why are these people crying?"

Alaric steps in front of all of us. He talks to some guy with blond hair. "Matt, what's going on? Why did you call us here?" Alaric and Matt walk away.

Hope walks over to me and Lizzie. Rafael walks around the school. He talks to a few students. Lizzie watches Rafael. Her face looks sad. "Lizzie, why do you act so weird around Rafael? I heard you guys had a... fling, but why do you still act weird?"

Lizzie shifts uncomfortably. "I don't want to talk about it, Alexa."

"Okay. Even though he's my brother, you don't deserve to pin after some guy. You deserve better."
I nudge her arm. She smiles at me and walks over to Alaric.

"In the ten years I've known Lizzie Saltzman, she has never been rejected by a guy. When your brother rejected her it was a foreign concept to her. That's why she acts all weird around him." Hope shrugs it off. She's used to Lizzie, but I'm not.

"Well she still doesn't deserve to be running after some guy. Brother or no brother."

Hope eyes me up and down. "You're a nice person Alexa. I can tell." We exchange a smile and eye contact. Hope seems like a great person. She seems a little lost though, but Hope is strong.

"Hey guys! My dad said to come on." Lizzie runs out of the doors of the school, and then waits for us to catch up with her.

We all follow Lizzie and Alaric inside the school. Inside of it, there is goo dripping down from the ceiling. It drips down on our heads a couple times. The liquid green goo runs down. It smells awful.

"This is so nasty." Lizzie tries to wipe the goo off of her.

Hope rolls her eyes. "Stop complaining all the time, Lizzie. We're all in this together." Hope walks ahead of us. Alaric and Rafael follow her.

Lizzie rolls her eye, and I chuckle. Alaric turns around in front of us causing to stop. "Okay. We are going to split up. I'm going to take the left side of the school, Hope and Raf take the forward classes, Lizzie and Alexa take the right. Look for any clues that can tell us what this monster is."

We all nod and go our separate ways. Rafael turns towards Lizzie. "Make sure you take care of my sister." Lizzie nods and give Rafael a smile.

"I don't need to be taking care of." He laughs a little while folding his arms.

"Based on what happened yesterday, I say otherwise."

Lizzie does the proud smile. "Don't worry Raf. Your sister is safe with me."

Rafael gives her a weird look and starts walking as Hope rolls her eyes. As soon as they are out of eyesight, Lizzie scoffs. "Why am I so lame? I can't believe I did that."

"Lizzie, you don't need to impress him. Just focus on someone new. Someone who actually takes an interest in you."

"Whatever. Let's go." Lizzie walks ahead of me.

Me and Lizzie look throughout the right side of the school. We look in the classrooms trying to find some sort of clues. As we're walking, Lizzie stops at a trophy case.

"That's my mom."

The picture is of Caroline and some other girls. They all wear cheer outfits. "You miss her, huh?"

"I know that I just seen her, but I miss having her here everyday. Yelling at me and Josie for lighting things on fire, telling us to be careful when doing something, making sure we were okay. I didn't care as much about my dad and Hopes relationship when she was here. That probably makes me sound so selfish considering the fact Hope has nobody."

"Hey. That doesn't make you selfish. You have every right to miss your mom."

Lizzie fights back tears. She sniffles. "Let's finish my dad's task."

"Okay. Why don't you stay here a minute to calm down? I'll go and text you where I'm at."

Lizzie nods still sniffing.

The school is dark and quiet as I walk through it. There is one class that has a glowing green light.

"Hey Lizzie. I think I found something."

There is no answer. "Lizzie? Lizzie!" Still no answer. After a slight moment of fear, I decide to go in.

The light is coming from a dresser. It's a necklace that that is glowing green. There is a symbol on the necklace. It's a M and it's huge.

"What the heck?"

The door closes suddenly. Behind it stands a green hideous monster. It looks about six foot.

With all of my strength to stop the monster, I try to do a spell from the grimoire Hope gave me.

"Phesmatos superous em animi." The words are a foreign concept, but they roll off my tongue easily. The monster doesn't seem to be affected. It tries to walk out the door, but I stop it.

"Hey! Looking for this?" The necklace is flashing green faster than ever now. "Phesmatos superous em animi!" The monster seemed to be feeling pain now.

"Im coming Alexa." Hope runs into the room and says the words by me. Lizzie comes into the room and grabs Hope's hand.  "Phesmatos superous em animi!" The monster falls against a wall. The wall knocks down.

Rafael and Alaric comes in. Both of them with weapons. Alaric has a bow and Rafael has a sword.

Rafael looks around. "Wow. Guess you guys won't need our help."

Lizzie does another proud smile. "Of course not."

*In the car*

"Today was one hell of a day." My voice seems to lighten up the mood.

Alaric chuckles. "I couldn't agree more, Alexa."

*At school*

Lizzie is telling a group of people what happened. Obviously she left out her whole sentimental part with me and her. "It was totally crazy."

She continues saying how we saved the whole entire school, and how the locals were scared of the monster, but we saved them.

Hope leans against a wall across from me. She waves and walks over. "You okay?"

"Yeah."

It's silent for a moment. "You know today was really dangerous. You going against that monster when you didn't even know about the supernatural world a few days ago."

"I know. Luckily, I had a friend who was able to give me an awesome book on spells."

"Yea." Hope sees Jed walking by. "Welp that's my cue to leave." She laughs as she walks away.

"Hey." Jed has a sly grin on his face.

"Hi."

"I heard you took down a monster."

"Yeah. I guess." Jed nods. He looks obviously proud.

"Badass."

I laugh. "Sure. Badass."

Jed grabs my hand. "Let's go for a walk. Outside."

"Okay."

As me and Jed were walking we see a figure. I know who it is immediately.

"Chris?!" He looks around, panicked. His spiky red hair all over his face. There is mud and dirt covering his entire body.

"Chris? As in your boyfriend?" Jed sounds somewhat jealous. He stands behind me, as I slowly walk towards Chris. He has a slight smile on his face. He looks exhausted.
