Chapter 1 - The Rain

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

19 Years Later....

The Rain poured heavily as I ran towards the apartment that I shared with Melanie who happens to have been my best friend since childhood. I reached home and Melanie opened the door, a coffee in one hand and a fashion magazine in the other.

"Hey, Melanie." I greeted her with a small hug but she pushed me away.

"Ashley you are muddy and wet! Don't touch me till you clean up!" She said backing away after having glanced at me.

I grinned and smiled at her. I placed my small bag on the counter and slipped off my takkies. I grabbed them both and took them to my room. I released my long, brown, wavy hair out of its messy bun. I ran my fingers through it before slipping into the shower and letting the warm water massage the knots out of my back. I soaped through my hair. I finished and stepped out and I had missed the warm water already.

"How was work?" Melanie asked as she saw that I was dressed in my comfortable clothes which were a navy hoodie and black sweat pants.

"Usual, but I wish I could just quit you know," I said.

I was 24 years old, I worked at a five-star restaurant, I had morning shifts on two days and the rest of the three days I had night shifts, I also was a receptionist three days a week at the orphanage. I wasn't poor but I wasn't rich either.

"Did David annoy you today as well?" Melanie inquired, placing her hands on her hips.

"Not really. He just winked and flirted with me. Basically the usual."

"Ashley, if he tries something, promise me you will tell someone immediately!" Melanie glanced at me with a hard look.

"Yes Mel, I promise," I said and she smiled and hugged me.

"Do you have any plans for this week?" Melanie asked as she bit her chocolate bar.

"Nope, why?" I asked her as I blow-dried my hair.

"At work, I have a gala and I was hoping you could maybe be my plus one. It is really nice and fancy...." She hesitated for a moment before adding "There are a lot of hot guys!" She said and I could see the excitement on her face.

"Do I have to?" I asked with a groan. I was genuinely hoping to sleep.

You see, things with fancy dresses, sparkly high heels, professionally done makeup, and whatever else, are just not my thing. I don't like wearing dresses unless it is very hot, and even then I prefer to wear shorts and some sandals.

"Yup! You have no choice!" She said and I nodded with a sigh.

Melanie fist-pumped the air and made her wild blonde hair go wilder as she danced like a crazy person in my room.

"When is it?" I asked her and she stopped doing her crazy chicken dance in my room.

"Uhh, about that....the gala is... err... tomorrow," Melanie stated.

"You only told me now!" I screeched at her.

"Sorry about that!" Melanie apologised.

"Can we go home yet?" I asked as I tiredly held my million shopping bags. Melanie forced me to go to the mall and now I was tired and starving. I had only eaten breakfast as I did not feel like eating lunch, now I am regretting it.

"Not yet! We need to do your fingernails and find some matching accessories for your dress and buy you some makeup. We also have to do your hair!" Melanie fretted as she told me the long list I had to go through. I groaned and she gave me the look that said 'shut the hell up' and we continued further with my torture.

Six hours later full of my whining and nagging we were in Melanie's car going back to our apartment. I still hated cars, I hated them when they sped and Melanie knew this so she drove at a moderate speed, something I could tolerate. It had taken years for me to be able to get into the backseat of a car, let alone the passenger seat. It was just the familiar setting brought back memories of that horrid day, something I hated reviving or even thinking about.

We arrived safely and I grabbed my one million bags, yes it is an exaggeration but who cares, and headed towards my room and unpacked. I sighed as I glanced at how messy my bedroom was and I set off to tidy it up.

A few moments later my cell phone rang and as I picked it up, I saw it was my granny calling me. My granny was the person who raised me and I loved and respected her to bits.

"Hello, granny!" I said excitedly as I answered my phone.

My grandmother took me in when she found out about the accident. She was devastated to have lost her son but at the same time, she ensured that I was nurtured and well taken care of. She worked incredibly hard to provide me with an opportunity to get an education. I was grateful for every single thing she had done for me and I could never ever repay her back for all the kindness she showed towards me.

"Hello dear, how are you?" She asked enthusiastically.

"I am fantastic thanks and you?" I responded as I flung myself on my bed.

"That is great my dear, I am doing fine." My grandma said and I smiled.

"Yeah. Granny, Mel is making me go to a gala tomorrow." I said.

"You going to a gala my dear? Unbelievable!" She said with a chuckle and I smiled at that.

"Yeah I am, I also bought a new dress," I told her.

"You have to send pictures!" My grandma said and I grinned. That was my grandma up to date with things including technology. She had an iPad, an Mp3 player and so much more.

"I will, Melanie is dressing me up!" I said.

"That girl. Can you try to come down Uncle Sam is coming over." My granny said and I grinned.

"Yeah, I will try. When is he going to be there?" I asked.

"The next two weeks dear." She said.

"That is fantastic!" I said and indeed it was. Uncle Sam was my dad's twin and I loved him to bits. I loved spending time with him.

"Yes, yes it is. Ashley dear I have to get going now. Time for me to take a shower. Don't forget to send pics." She said and I smiled.

"I won't. I love you, granny!" I said with a smile.

"Love you too!" She said before ending the call.

I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. At least tomorrow was Saturday so I would get to sleep in late. The gala was during the night so Melanie had no reason to scream at me to wake up like she has to do every morning. I love sleeping but sadly I did not get much of it.

My two jobs kept me on my toes all week. I rarely sleep early and I do have to work to get some money, I know that all the funds my parents left for me would not keep me alive forever.

The thought of my parents still made me feel sad and that was how I fell asleep that night.
