Can a good thing last?

***

It had been a little less than a week since the doctor had told her how long her recovery would take. "All I'm saying is, you've been kidnapped and..., you've been shot...twice! And left with months of recovery, and you're battling grief," Nick sighed, slipping into his bed with Maya beside him, "I'm saying you need a break. Time to recoup and re-evaluate...and...and maybe do something safer." Maya was on her first week with the cast on and she was already back at the office which infuriated Nick to no end. But other than that, there relationship was steady. Some nights spent at her house and other nights at his. They were satisfied and open, things were going the way they have both wanted it to go.

"Nick, I know you're concerned but I was built for this," she paused, "I love this job. I can't see myself doing anything else. I don't want boring. That's not me and that's what every other job would be. Bor-r-ring," she dragged out the word for drama.

"You could travel or work with kids," he paused, "find a hobby. I'm not saying be done forever but give its 4 or 5 months to see where life can take you."

"You want me to leave this early in our relationship, really?" Maya knew that wasn't the point, but she still didn't like the idea of leaving for an extended period of time, knowing she would be separated from him.

"I don't want you to leave," he shook his head, "that wasn't the point. My point is that I want you to be safe even if it's only for a few months. I just want you to see what else is out there that is non-threatening to your health and wellness. Hell you could take a few classes at the community college if that's what you wanna do."

She groaned, she was growing tired of having this conversation with him, "I'm getting a cookie." She grabbed her crutches and walked out of the room, she should have known that he would follow her.

"Why do you always walk away when I talk about this with you?" He asked, pressing the matter further.

"Because I'm sick of it, it's all you've been talking about this past week," she turned and faced him, "I've heard what you've had to say and I told you that I would think about it so can you just drop it for the night. Please? Please drop it, Nick."

He sighed, "fine. You're right, you're right. I've pushed this enough for now. I'm sorry." He walked by her and pulled out the box of cookies from a cabinet. "Want some milk?"

"Yes, please," she told him, sitting down at the stool by the island. He dropped the cookies in front of her and grabbed two glasses before filling both with whole milk. Maya watched him move about his kitchen and suddenly without thinking, "do you think we should move in together." He dropped the milk container in the fridge with a loud thud, thoroughly taken aback by the question. He turned and brought the glasses, still having said nothing. "Or not, I know we haven't been official long."

He shook his head, "that's just something that I have to think about. I'm not saying I do or I don't want that. I'm just surprised--" He babbled on.

"Okay, Nick," she stopped him, "it was just an idea, don't overthink it."

"We haven't even told everybody that we're seeing each other."

"I know we haven't, but they know," Maya pauses, "Well, they kind of know."

"They know? How?" Nick asks, confused.

"They've been betting on us since we met," she told him, "Abby told me."

"You're kidding," he said, somehow genuinely surprised, "I should have known." he let it sink in for a long moment, "that means that Gibbs knows." He thought back to his comment at the hospital take care of her. How had he been so blind? "I feel dumb."

Maya laughed, "I know how you feel. I felt like that when Abby told me. Gibbs has a sixth sense about shit like this. I should have known. I was worried about it the first time we slept together but it's like I forgot. I don't know."

"Should we tell them? Make it official?" He asked her.

"We can," she said but sounded reluctant.

"We don't have to, but you're the one that brought up moving in together, but we can't really do that until we become official, can we?" Nick says, sensing her opposition.

"I'm just nervous, I guess," she says, opening the box of cookies finally and picking one up.

"Why are you nervous?" He asked, sitting on the stool next to hers.

"It's just that Abby, McGee, and Gibbs all knew the feelings I had for Tony. Hell even Tony knew, but they all knew it wouldn't work out and didn't tell me," she paused, "I just don't want this to be the same thing. And I'm totally over Tony," she added to ensured him but Nick wasn't worried.

"Well, I'm not worried," he shrugs, "I know this is new, but I'm not worried."

She looked at him and he was sincere, she realized then that she had been fiddling with her cookie. She set it down in front of her because Nick had noticed too, "I am grateful that I can talk so openly with you, Nick."

He smiles, "like I told you before, you can tell me anything. You could tell me the worst thing and I would still think the world of you."
