Chapter 5 - The Journal

It was a bit over halfway through the term, and the assignments were stacking up while the homework was out of control. Chekov and I spent all our free time studying in the library together quizzing each other and laughing uncontrollably at our pathetic jokes. His condition had improved drastically since that night. He hadn't even cut once and I was so proud of him. Some pretty bad things had happened to him. Damien was pushing him further and further each day. He started copping all this childish 'Jerk-off has a girlfriend' and stupid stuff like that. At one stage I heard one of the things that he said to Chekov and I gave him a piece of my mind. Thank you Yr 10 debating team. But there was one day when things got out if hand.

There was a loud knock at the door, "Vienna! Please open up!!" It was Chekov's voice and he sounded pretty desperate. I also taught him how to say my name properly. I opened the door and he ran inside. "Vienna they stole it!" He said desperately. "Stole what Chekov?!" He met my eyes and caught his breath. "My journal."

"What's in the journal?" I asked, while jogging with Chekov beside me. "Everything! Everything zat has happened since I first walked in here. Ewen things zat happened between us and zat night where..." He trailed off and blushed. He swore in Russian and kept running. Chekov lead me to where the whole group was, gathered around the book and laughing hysterically. "Give it back, stealing is a criminal offence!" I shouted, striding towards them. Damien snickered and closed the book. I walked right up to his face and sneered. "Let's make a trade." I took a step back and held up his wallet. "I'll have the journal and you can have your wallet back." He looked at me completely confused. One of the guys next to him laughed. I held up his wallet too, and a few of the other people's around him. They all patted their pockets and gasped in shock. "Seems like a fair trade?" They glared at Damien. He threw the journal at Chekov, who almost dropped it but managed to keep a hold of it. I chucked the wallets back at their owners, who glared at me in return. Chekov inspected the condition of the book. Damien gave an evil grin. "Let me introduce you to someone." He turned over to some other blonde guy whose hair was way too long and he flicked it constantly. "This is Viktor, he's also Russian. He gave us translating assistance." I've never seen Chekov's eyes grow wider, or his face go redder. Hey yelled out the Russian equivalent of 'What the hell did you read?!' And a few other nasty words. The Russian started arguing back with an evil grin. Chekov looked at me and then back at Viktor.

Damien pulled out a PADD, and showed it to Viktor. "Will you do the honours?" Damien asked. Viktor cleared his throat. "February 24th - Her name is Vienna, and she's beautiful. She sat next to me in class today, and it was so exciting. I was too shy to say much, but it was still really lucky. I haven't been this happy since I was a child. Tonight was one of my first clean nights in ages, it felt good. She's like an angel, not just because she's so beautiful but because she's saving me. And the funny thing Is she doesn't even know it." Viktor looked up at me, my cheeks flushed and they all started laughing.

Viktor kept going, "February 29th - One part of me can't take this any more, but a new part of me wants to keep fighting. She hugged me tonight, and for a long time too. I haven't been hugged by a girl since I was like eight years old. We fell asleep together, and I kissed her goodnight. That's the first time I've ever kissed a girl, and she wasn't even awake at the time. I really just want to tell her how much I like her and how much she means to me, but I can't. I want to kiss her again, but when she's awake maybe next time. She really was an angel today, a lot of things happened and could've gotten worse, but she saved me again. My life is in her hands sometimes... But she does the right thing, she's has a kind heart and a pure soul. I respect that." They all cracked up laughing.

Damien had scanned all the pages of his journal, and they had read them all, absolutely everything. As soon as Viktor had stopped talking, Chekov had just run. I panicked, and ran after him, but he was too fast. He got so far ahead that I couldn't see where he was. Tears started streaming down my face. I was scared that he was going to do something stupid. I looked around hopelessly, grabbing my phone and ringing him. The adrenaline running through my veins propelled me to his room. I just walked straight and checked everywhere, it was empty. I ran to my own room, but that also empty.

My eyes flickered to one of the buildings ahead of me. It was one of the tallest around. I gasped in shock. "No..." I screamed. It was the one from my nightmares.
