Chapter 12 (Part 2)

As we all pulled up, outside of the garage, we saw Jake’s car parked up at the side of a wall near the shutter and a shadow sat on the hood of the car. I switched the ignition off and climbed out of the car.

“Jake” I said cautiously. He’s not a very angry person and he wouldn’t hurt a fly but lately if it had anything to do with his family, friends or Hayden he wouldn’t hold back.

“Go away” I heard him whisper. I looked back to see Blake and Scott leaning against their cars looking really concerned. I turned back around and started to walk slowly towards him.

“God why am I so stupid? I thought I could be carefree and actually think I could make friends but I never thought about the fact that if she’s ever seen with me she’s in trouble not just with the school board but something much worse.” He muttered to himself. I carried on walking until I was stood in front of him.

“Jake... come on we’ll all go inside the garage and talk about it” I said to him.

He shook his head and laughed a little but not out of humour. “There’s nothing to talk about.”

“Come on Jake... please” I heard him sigh and start to stand up. I walked towards the garage where Scott and Blake were already stood waiting with the door open. We all walked in towards the little area at the back where there was an old battered couch and some chairs where we sat down during breaks from working at the garage or just to come and chill out.

I sat down on one of the chairs whilst Jake sat on the couch with Scott and Blake sitting on the other chairs. We sat there for a couple of quiet minutes waiting for Jake to say something.

“Come on Jake... you need to tell us what’s going on in your mind. We made a pack that we would tell each other everything ever since that night” Blake said.

“There’s nothing to talk about I’ve made my decision” Jake shrugged.

“Oh ye and what’s that?” Scott asked.

“I’ll stay away from her. The only times I’ll see her is at school and at dinners that my mum invites her to.”

“Dude you can’t do that... she’s a friend of yours” Blake said.

“Not anymore.”

“You can’t just drop her like that” Scott clicked his fingers together.

“Oh ye... watch me... it’s for her own safety Scott... do you not agree with me.”

“Dude I agree but it’s not gonna be that simple... our lives aren’t simple and they haven’t been for a long time... you know we’d protect her we wouldn’t let anyone near her” Blake said causing Jake to look up at all of us. I could actually see water in his eyes. If he did what he said he would... it would break him literally break him even though he wouldn’t be able to explain why because he’s that stupid to even know what his feelings are.

“It’s not that easy though...” he laughed a little “it’s better if we’re not friends meaning none of us talk to her.”

“Jake no offence but I’m not gonna stop talking to her... she doesn’t have any friends she only has us. Are you really gonna take us lot away from her and make her friendless?” I asked him by emphasising the ‘really’ part.

“J, if it keeps her safe... ye” he said nodding his head.

“Jake we like Hayden she’s a nice girl and very interesting but we know you and when your heart is set on something that’s it you don’t let it go easily.”

“Ye well in situations like this you listen to your brain not your heart” he said coldly.

“Whatever dude just remember it’s not just you who wants to keep her safe now and if she wants to talk to me I’m not gonna ignore her.” I said whilst standing up and walking to the garage door. As I walked to my car I heard people moving inside no doubt the guys getting ready to go home. I climbed in my car and started to drive home. All I can think about is if Jake does ignore Hayden he’s not just going to destroy himself but he’ll destroy her without even knowing about it.
