Everything Wrong With: Sonic Fandom

Recolors, in general

Requested by -OtakuGamer- and (ummm, I actually can't find who, but the person had "Tails" in their name sorry)

Because of my extreme lack of activity lately, plus the fact that I lost our home internet connection for like 5 days, I decided that maybe I should go rant now on the more common topics, rather than ones that piss me off. Since recolors have been such a huge buzz around the fandom lately, I decided that maybe I should give this one a shot.

RECOLOR, by definition, means to color again or differently.

While its no surprise to anyone when I say that a majority of the users in wattpad likes to indulge themselves in the idea of recolors, as most OCs are infact prime examples of this terrible trait.

I have seen countless bluntly recolored OCs who are pretty much beloved and treated fairly by many and who people do not call out on regarding their act.

Recoloring, to me, is nothing more than to select and change the color scheme or tone of an existing image, ruining its overall quality by replacing it with eye-bleeding colors, or to literally color over it manually, in the most horrifyingly disgusting way possible, and calling it either art or your OC.

Not gonna lie, my major hatred to these comes from seeing my own old OCs get recolored once, and so terribly too, but I had no ability to call out the recolorist or to take it down so I had to watch helplessly and silently. Imagine a real human being feeling that way towards their own artworks or official ones being treated like absolute crap.

This method is really pathetic.

Not only does this remove all redeeming qualities of an existing artwork, it is bland and lazy. It totally destroys the idea of originality and creativity, and it disrespects the artwork and its creator.

In other sites it is known that people who does this often complaints that this is the only method they have for creating a visual for their OC, while being unable to draw (that and stealing, which I think I'll re-tackle soon) even though this excuse is very one-sided and really stupid.

It is never deemed necessary, or even good to do this because it ruins the image of your character. Not only are you making your character look so pathetic that it isn't even worth reading or looking at but you ruin your image by proving that lazy methods such as this is the only resort you can think of.

Imagine how ugly and horrible you make yourself and your OC look like, especially depending on the recolor quality. Some recolors out there are really bad and terrible, making it well known over the internet that any OC who is a recolor is immediately bad. 

This type of habit when it comes to Original Characters is soooo bad, that the Sonic Fandom has been notorious for 30% of it's fanbase's OCs being nothing more than terribly done recolors and edits that makes reviewers throw up. This is the level we are in, people!

Just want to make it clear, that any form of recolor is bad, regardless of its quality. Some people makes it not obvious that its a recolor but regardless, its still stealing and its still ugly. Hilariously enough many people have recognized the terrible qualities of this and have stand against the idea, which to me is very good and totally worth following as well. 

Recolors are literally the lowest an OC or illustrator can get, and is nothing more than a desperate attempt to get somewhere. Recolors, generally cannot be even called out as being good. It's worse than tracing, and tracing itself is pretty damn low in my book.

It lacks quality and effort and pretty much the love and care than one puts and gives when creating a visual for their OC. Even if you try to change the style and appearance as you redesign the existing visuals or fanart.

I don't care if you can't draw. Just don't even try, or ask someone else to do it. Please don't stoop up to this level.

I also like to point out how lots of people ask me to tackle this because there's alot of Amy recolors around. To be more specific on this rant, by making yourself an Amy recolor, you undoubtedly make your OC much more lower or lamer than her, while claiming the exact opposite.

While we're on the Amy recolor topic, requested by -OtakuGamer-, its even funnier knowing that a good amount of Amy recolors all ship themselves with Sonic, or are some really edgy character who falls into the Mary Sue stereotype. Just wanted to point out how funny the fact is.

Back to recolors, I highly acknowledge anyone who draws or creates visuals for their OCs to refrain from recoloring because come on, why would you? 

May it be an original character or an OC from Deviantart or what not, show some respect by not touching any existing photo or drawing, for the good of you and the artist.

To be fair I don't even see why people would do something like this in the first place because recolors are like the shit of any art portfolios or websites/apps. Anyone would agree to that. It's very cringy, ugly and stupid and please just don't do it. My head hurts just looking at these kind of stuff.

If you see anyone who recolors and you are afraid to point it out, tell them I sent you (if it makes you feel less scared of reporting and such) and call them out with confidence. I mean I'm not always confident about calling people out on it so the more the merrier I guess?

I know rants about recolors are so common, but at the same time its my current goal to rant on the most common things right now, to get an audience of people who are familiar with these kinds of problems while taking them off the list of the many topics I'm requested to do.

Edit: Now that I remembered, SonicBoomAutumn2020 made a rant about recolors too, and while I'm not one who likes to give shout outs, hers is more short and straightforward, so if you want it to be summed up, you can pretty much check out her version of the rant (she has it with examples too, to prove her points!)
