After Gaby had left, Illya sat back down on the bed and opened the bedside table draw. Inside, he had hidden the letter he was working on to send to his mother in Moscow. The last time he saw her was in Istanbul, but he realized his younger sister, Maria, was not going to make it through the Russian winter because of her illness.

He thumbed through all the pages he had written, rereading some of them, before furiously scrunching them up and throwing it on the floor next to him. He got out a pen and leaned over on the paper.

Dear Mother,

No. She had never been a real mother to him. He was tempted to scrunch up the paper, but he shook his head and kept it.

Dear Mother,

I will be meeting you in Moscow when I arrive tomorrow. I will come in my own time. Tell Maria for me.

He stopped. Nothing more needed to be said. He was only coming for his little sister.
