Chapter Twenty-Three

Start from the beginning

"I'm going to head out for five minutes to photocopy some extras. Try starting the next page," I announced to the class even though half of them wouldn't have listened to me. I made sure that Avery came with me so it would be easier to look for Sky. I pretended that she would help me organize the lesson. "Why did they argue?" I asked Avery. Avery looked even more worried. "Last night he sent her a text saying that their "relationship" should go public. She got angry with him and told him and the rest of the school that they were quote on quote, "not, never were, and never will be a couple." I clenched my fists at my side.

"That bastard," I muttered and continued walking. I was getting closer to Sky's locker when I heard a little noise from the janitors closet. I slowed down and started walking towards the metal door and began listening. I could hear the faint sound of a male voice and something that sounded like crying. I looked back at Ave to ask her if Sky might be inside when I heard Sky's voice screaming; "Help!

Somebody help me!"

As soon as I heard Sky's scream I opened the door and threw the asshole off of Sky. I couldn't control myself and kept throwing punches until Trevor passed out. I held onto a still Sky that had blood running out from the back of her head and a bruised face. Trevor is going to pay for this. No one hurts my friends. Especially not Sky. I whispered words of encouragement to Sky as I carefully held her in my arms. "It's going to be ok, Sky. You'll get through this," I told her, but she was out cold. Avery and

Michael Edwards, who was Avery and Sky's chemistry teacher, soon interrupted us.

"What's going on here?" Michael asked me angrily. "I walked in on Trevor Ryan hurting and attempting to rape Sky," I answered angrily. If my eyes could change colour they would probably be a blood red right now. Michael looked at me skeptically. "You seem to be very cozy with Miss Evans," he observed. I couldn't help but glare at him. "She has just been attacked and I'm trying to comfort her. She's passed out and needs an ambulance." Mr. Edwards didn't look impressed and he definitely didn't buy my reason. He motioned for me to get out of the closet. I carried Sky as carefully as I could. Michael closed the door and moved closer to me.

"Cut the crap, Daniel. I know about you and Sky's relationship. I saw you two at the park," he whispered in anger. Shit. I looked down at Sky. I can't lose her; especially not when she's going to need me the most. "Michael, look. I love Sky more than you will ever know. We were together before I knew I was going to be her teacher. I thought she was older and she assumed that I knew. I would never take advantage of her. If the age difference were illegal I wouldn't be with her, but it's not. I'll stop seeing her until graduation if I have to, but please don't ruin her future because of this. I need to help her right now and get her to a hospital. I can't lose her," I said and realized that I had started crying at one point.

Mr. Edwards sighed. Avery had already called for an ambulance. Thankfully no one had come out of their classrooms. "I won't say anything, but it's only because I believe you. But I will tell you that it's best if you don't keep seeing each other until it's legal. I can't risk my own job because of this," Mr. Edwards explained. I nodded at him thankfully. "An ambulance is going to be here for Sky and the douchebag soon," Avery said as she crouched down next to Sky and held her hand. In less than five minutes the ambulances had arrived. Students started leaving their classes to see what the commotion was about.

The paramedics jotted down some information about both Sky and Trevor. I informed them that I would be calling the parents to explain what had happened since I was one of Sky, and sadly Trevor's teachers. I tried to get into the ambulance with Sky, but Michael pulled me back.

"I think it would be better if Avery went with Sky and you made those calls right now. I'll cover for you for the rest of the week. I have a free period first period anyways and math is my other teachable. Just remember what I said," he said to me. I looked down in defeat. He's probably right, I thought to myself as I nodded and helped Avery into the ambulance. "Take care of her until I can go there," I pleaded before heading back inside.

Making the two phone calls were the hardest thing that I have ever had to do. When I called Ellie, she cried hysterically as I explained the situation. She thanked me over and over again that I had stopped Trevor before he could actually succeed in what he was trying to do. I told her that I would see her at the hospital later in the evening. Calling Trevor's parents had to be the hardest. I explained the entire situation and that Sky's parents wanted to charge Trevor for rape. Trevor wasn't 18 yet so he probably wouldn't be triad as an adult, but there was still hope. His parents didn't seem to really care of what Trevor had done. They were just worried about how much money their "idiot of a son" would end up costing them.

Thankfully the bell for lunch had gone right after I finished speaking to Trevor's parents. I don't think I would have been able to handle another class. At least not right now. I just stayed inside of my classroom. I wasn't hungry at all. I stared at the empty desks and felt very lonely. This would be the fist lunch since Sky's detentions had started that she wasn't here. The sad thing is that she wasn't even at home sick. She was in the hospital getting medical care for what Trevor had done to her. I smashed the bottom of my fists on the top of my wooden desk and screamed in anger. What has Sky ever done to deserve this? It's not fair. No one deserves to experience that.

I decided to drop by the principal's office and tell him that I wasn't feeling well after what had happened. He understood and told me to go home to get some rest. As soon as I got into the parking lot I ran towards my car like there was no tomorrow. I need to get to Sky as fast as possible. I sped all the way to the hospital and ran towards the room Sky was staying in as soon as I spoke to the secretary. "Is she doing alright?" I asked as soon as I walked into the room. Ellie was holding Sky's hand while crying hysterically. Avery ran over to give me a hug.

"Thank you so much for saving her, Dan. I don't know what I would've done if someone hurt Sky," she said before sitting back down in her seat. "Is Luke coming?" I asked her. She nodded. "He should be here in a few minutes. He just got out of his class and it's about 10 minutes walking from here," she explained. I nodded and took a seat next to Ellie before wrapping an arm around her.

"Sky's going to be ok, Ellie. She's really strong and I'm sure she'll be back to her normal self in no time," I told her, hoping that my own words would be true. "I sure hope so, Dan. I just can't believe that there are people like that boy who would hurt my baby. She's never done anything to hurt anyone. She doesn't deserve this," she cried into my chest. I rubbed her back until her crying stopped.

"I really hope you and Sky end up staying together for good. You take such good care of her," she said and wiped her tears. I smiled at her. "I really hope so too," I told her honestly. "Oh my God. What happened to her?" Luke asked as soon as he walked in. Avery explained the whole situation as I texted Evie. She couldn't make it today since she had a client that needed help, but she would stop by when she could. "So what's the plan with Trevor?" Luke asked me looking very angry. He thought of Sky as a little sister and I could tell that he wanted to destroy Trevor. "I definitely want him arrested and sent far away from Sky," I said angrily. Everyone in the room was in agreement. I looked over at Sky who was still sleeping. I analyzed her head, which now had a few stitches where she was bleeding from before.

"I'll make sure you never get hurt again," I promised Sky before I decided to talk to Avery. I explained what Mr. Edwards had told me. Avery wasn't pleased to hear that somebody else had found out about the relationship, but she agreed that it would be best to put a hold on things for the meantime; at least until graduation. "I'll be back during the week to see how Sky's doing. I'll talk to her about this while I'm at it," I said before leaving the hospital for the night.

Sorry for being a bummer in this chapter. I just want to clarify something that people asked me a few years ago (not in the existing comments because they're all part of other chapters because I shortened the book). So Trevor attempted to rape Sky, but he didn't actually get to doing anything sexual to her, but those were his intentions and he did assault her. I also wanted to add this in: If you ever have someone in your life that is acting similarly to Trevor please don't be afraid to tell others about them because you think it's harmless. You never know what could happen and this chapter and it's really sad to say that Sky came out lucky with what could have happened to her. Please stay safe everyone <3
