Chapter 18:
Later that night I got out of bed to get a glass of water. I looked out the window over the sink and I saw Johanna still sitting on the ledge of the fountain, alone. I grabbed my leather jacket off the coat rack and walked outside. As I got closer I saw her staring down at her ring and she was twisting it back and forth on her finger.
"Johanna?"
She looked up, the tears on her face shining in the moonlight. I sat down next to her. Mist from the fountain blew onto us with the cool summer breeze.
"What's wrong?"
She cried harder and rested her head on my shoulder. I put my arm around her. "I love someone else," she said between sobs. "Or at least I used to..."
"Wha-" I started, but she cut me off.
"He's dead now!" She pulled away and put her head in her hands. "He fucking died, Katniss! All because of the stupid Games!" She was causing quite a racket. Meanwhile, all I did was sit there, baffled. I watched her like a little kid, unsure of what to say.
"Johanna, you're going to wake everybody up."
"I don't care!" She yelled, but was then silent as she tried to relax. "It was seven years ago," she started. "His name was Avan and he was reaped. He was my friend, just like you and Gale really. One day he said he wanted to marry me. I told him that when the time was right I would... It's been years since that Game. Only he's dead and I love Gale."
Johanna looked me in the eyes. I could see the pain and guilt exposed in them.
"I love him...I love him..." she mindlessly trailed off.
