Chapter 9:
I leapt up from the chair and ran into the water. I dove in. The water was cold and the salt burned my eyes. I looked around under the water. I swam off the sandbank I had been standing on. After that the water was about 10 feet deep. That's when I spotted him.
He was near the floor floating around after the drop off. I swam down towards him and scooped him up. He was floating around a rusty object with dead flowers around it. Finnick's trident. I swam to shore, handing Noah to Haymitch and he started CPR. I crawled out of the water, my heart racing. I dug my nails into the ground, my fingers beginning to sink deeper into the wet sand. Noah quickly jerked away, coughing up water. He's alive. I turned to look over my shoulder back towards the water. Finnick's trident was down there. I have to see it again.
Later that night when everyone went to bed I snuck outside. I was armed with a waterproof flashlight and I was ready to search for it.
"Katniss," I heard someone say.
I turned around and saw Finnick. I ran to hug him but my arms ran right through him, circling back around and crossing over my chest. I ended up accidentally hugging myself.
"Katniss, thank you for saving him. I see you've found where my trident is. Could you go get it?" he said, grinning. I nodded and carried on.
The water was dark except for my flashlight and a thin strip of moonlight that reflected off the surface. I found his trident again with ease and pulled it to the surface. I swam to shore, careful not to accidentally stab myself with it. I sat in the sand, the cool ocean breeze causing me to shiver. There was a folded piece of paper on one of the tips of the trident that hadn't been there before. I carefully took it off and opened it.
'Dear Katniss, thank you for finding my trident. Don't tell anyone about this note, especially Annie. Now read this part carefully because this is extremely important. On Noah's fourteenth birthday I want you to give him my trident. Manage to hide it, keep it with you or in a safe spot. I want him to have this. I can't thank you enough, Katniss. (P.S. Don't worry, Prim is safe up here with your father and I.) Love, Finnick'
