Chapter Seventy-Five: Pick Up

    She wasn't there.

    Not that he was expecting her to show, after what he had done. Yet he still came. Maybe just to have his hopes crushed, like he deserved.

    He asked the cashier if he had seen her lately, and he replied, "Nope, haven't seen her since yesterday."

    Yesterday?

    Did she not show up this morning?

    And finally, he dreaded the thought, could something have happened to her?

    He pulled out his phone, quickly pulling up her number, and called.

    Ring,

    Ring,

    Come on, pick up, pick up . . . .

    Ring,

    And then he could hear it, as the door blew open behind him, he could hear a phone ringing. He didn't have a direct view of the door, and no one entering had direct view of their table. He turned halfway to see who entered, when she picked up. And from both through the phone and in person, he could hear her ask,

    "Noah?"
