“Hello?”

“Michael, it’s Priscilla.”

His eyes narrowed. “Why are you calling me?”

“It’s Lisa, she’s in labor. I have no idea what’s going on between you two, but would you at least be able to be with her during this?” She asked in a hopeful and kind tone.

“We’ve been split for ages, and not only that, I’ve got things to take care of right now.”

Priscilla sighed. “Please, Michael. I’ve always seen you like a son.”

Michael groaned. Not that shit again. “How long has she been in labor?”

“Since last night, she’s about to deliver.”

Fingertips tapped along the dark cherry wood as anxiety began to kick in. Michael pinched the bridge of his nose as a slight touch of anger began to sweep through him. He already has so much going on with the album and his own family, plus what if this child didn’t turn out to even be his?

With another groan he replied, “Which hospital?”

“Cedar-Sinai.”

“Ok, I’m on my way.”

“Thank you, Michael.”

Without another word Michael set the phone down.

“Fucking great.”

Grabbing his jacket he made his way to the front of the house, passing Bill along the way. “Get me to Cedar-Sinai.”

Bill raised an eyebrow. “What's going on, Mike?”

“Lisa’s in labor.”

An unnerving silence swept through the foyer. A very uncomfortable one at that. This would ultimately be what the press would want, seeing Michael stop and drop everything to attend the birth of Lisa’s child. But if the child turned out to not be his, it would also possibly get the press off his back.

It was a double-edged sword.

“You sure about this, man? What about—“

“I gotta do this, just get me there.”

The ride was quiet, ungodly quiet. Michael was nervous without a reasonable doubt, eyes fixated on the passing scenery outside the window. Whatever awaited him was in God’s hands.

Upon reaching the hospital, he managed to get in without so much as a single sound through the back way. Not a single person spoke to him, knowing the gravity of the situation.

The only person to greet him was Priscilla, her arms immediately embracing him. He remained still and quiet, briefly hugging her in return.

“How is she?”

“She’s almost there.”

“Hmm.”

“Can you go be with her? Danny is already there, but Lisa still— she’s asked if you could—“

Michael nodded and walked into the room, hearing Lisa as she began to push, her cries echoing from all around.

“That’s it, Lisa. You’re doing great, on my count I want you to push again, ok?”

“Ok,” Lisa replied breathlessly.

Their eyes met, the world nearly stopped. Lisa’s brow was dotted with sweat, cheeks flushed with pain. Her hand was grasping Danny’s, trembling as another contraction rippled through her body.
