Like most of my plans, today did not unfold as I hoped it would. A sudden rainstorm moved in, the goddamn restaurant Emery used to like near our old high school closed for the evening due to the owner having an unforeseen emergency or whatever, and Emery is in a rush to get back home so I have to beg and plead for him to walk with me a bit longer.

It's muddy and miserable, the rain so loud I have to shout for him to hear me. But we venture a small ways off from the restaurant to the football field behind our high school where he used to watch me play. When I get down on bended knee and produce the ring from my back pocket, Emery is stunned into silence.

I've never been so scared in my life, and I find myself rambling, trying to justify why I'm not a bad idea.

"Emery, I know I will never deserve you, but I have to at least... We've been together our whole lives, Emery. We know each other. We knew each other as children - how many people can say that about their partner? Besides, thinking of baby Adonis... He oughta have a mommy and a daddy-"

Emery leans over me, grinning.

"And I suppose I'm the mommy?"

"W-Well, now, I wasn't gonna-"

"I would be honored." Emery leans down and kisses me.

"Emery..." I break the kiss long enough to hold the ring out and ask him properly. "Will you make me the happiest man on earth by marrying me?"

He says yes.
