As usual, I skip the first few minutes of my class to join Emery in the music room.

I find him comforting a shy beginner on the violin.

"It was so hard to get the posture right when I started," Emery tells the pretty girl. "I practiced with a wall. Moving the elbow joint but nothing else." He shows the girl how to keep her forearm angled consistently no matter what.

He sucks in a sharp breath, frustrated, when he sees the girl's bow.

"That's way too tight," he scowls, rotating the ring at the bottom to loosen the bow. "It's slightly bent, see? Like it could snap at any minute. When it goes in the case, it should be completely relaxed."

Emery helps her tune her violin.

"It's off. Too flat," he deduces expertly after strumming a single string once. I watch in awe as he twists the little knobs at the base of the strings, tightening them and plucking occasionally to test. "A... D... E..."

He's not paying attention to me, which I find annoying. I tug on his curls to get his attention.

"What are you, five?" Emery rolls his eyes.

The girl - Jessica - is pretty.

I pick up a guitar and start strumming some chords.

"Babe, you amaze me," I hum. "You're so smart and talented... How does all that knowledge fit inside your head..." I upload the video to Instagram and add the caption I wrote my best friend a song, nbd before posting.
