Jongho ✦ Assassin AU

Start from the beginning

To your dismay, this little game of cat and mouse continued for the next week. Your boss would give you information on the assassin Jongho and you would go to his current whereabouts only to follow him around and have him slip through your fingers yet again. The pattern was beginning to frustrate you to no end. It truly seemed like you'd never capture the tricky redhead.

"I don't think I can do this." You huffed, dropping down in a chair in your boss' office.
"I've never heard you say this before."
"Boss, this guy gets away every time." You complained.
"Maybe you're not making your move fast enough."
"No." You shook your head. "Every time I get close, he hurries off. It's almost like he knows I'm coming for him."
Your boss pressed his lips together. "It sounds to me like you want to drop the assignment."
A beat of silence passed, you didn't give an answer.
"I was tipped off by an anonymous source informing me of the location of Jongho's next assignment. This could be where you finally get him, Y/n. Are you sure you want to quit now?"
You chewed on your lip in deep thought.
"Well, Y/n? What do you say?"

You arrived at the large, abandoned building that was just a mere shell of what you presumed it was decades ago. The deep black and gray colors on the metal structure were daunting, the marks of rust showing just how long it had been sitting there. The sun sank behind the nearby buildings, casting long shadows across the pavement that had been cracked with time.
You hurried inside, your boots making little to no noise as you entered. The structure appeared to be an old storage facility, seeing as there were many large wooden crates and containers sitting around. They were perfect places to hide. Sneaking behind some of the boxes, you kept your guard up, making sure to be vigilant as you held your gun close.

A quiet shuffling noise caught your attention. You turned your head, catching sight of a small shape in the dim shadows.
I've got you now. You thought to yourself.
You hurried after him, keeping as quiet as possible.
"Y/n?" Your boss' voice came through the  earpiece in your ear.
"Yes. I'm here." You whispered.
"What's your status?"
"I'm certain he's here." You spoke into your earpiece. "I'm sure I just saw him."
"Go after him." Your boss instructed.
"Already on it." You whispered, moving around old storage boxes.
You then heard a noise nearby and hurried away, not wanting to get caught just yet.

Jongho heard you sneaking around the warehouse, using his earpiece to get in touch with the person who hired him.
"Hey. I've got her."
"Good."
Jongho held his gun close to his chest, moving to one of the crates he thought he saw you hide behind. You'd been a rather tricky target for him to catch, but he was always up for a challenge.

After a few more minutes of slinking around in the shadowy warehouse, you finally had him. He was just on the other side of the large crate you were hiding behind. You could practically feel his presence. Taking in a deep breath, you gathered your courage and moved around the corner, pointing your weapon. To your surprise, Jongho also had a weapon and it was pointed directly at you. The two of you were now having a face-off.
"Choi Jongho, put the gun down." You ordered.
"You first, Y/n L/n."
You were caught off guard, not expecting him to know your name but was quick to pull yourself together and straighten your posture.
"I was sent here to capture you, so put the gun down and give up."
"I was also sent to capture you." He responded. "So why don't you give up?"
"That's hilarious, but it's not gonna get you out of this." You chuckled.
"I'm telling the truth."
You narrowed your eyes at him, trying to decide if he really was being honest.
"Who sent you?" You asked.
"I don't know. Who sent you?"
"I don't know either."
He was silent for a moment and you could almost see the gears turning in his head.
"Were you in Busan a few days ago?" He inquired.
"Yes. I was after you."
"I was after you." He returned. "I was getting tips from some guy about you being in the area."
"But you couldn't catch me, so you gave up. Am I right?"
"Yes. How did you know?" He asked.
"I watched you."
Jongho slowly lowered his gun. "Something isn't right here."
"I was thinking the same." You lowered your weapon as well, sliding it into its holster. "Why don't we put a pause on this?" You suggested.
"Alright."
You watched as Jongho put away his gun, stepping towards you.
"I think we should speak to my boss." You told him.
"I agree. I'm sure your boss is the one who messed this up, anyway."
"Please." You scoffed. "How do you know it wasn't your boss?"
"My boss is perfect."
"Right." You rolled your eyes.
"And yours is?"
"I'd like to think so, yes."
Jongho narrowed his eyes at you.
"We're wasting time. We have to hurry." You told him.
"You're the one wasting time." He argued as you both moved hastily out of the building.

You pushed open the door to your boss' office. The man in charge was lounging in his chair with his feet propped up on the desk.
"Y/n!" He exclaimed in surprise, scurrying to sit up.
His mouth hung open as he saw Jongho walk in behind you.
"Hey. You got him!" He grinned.
"Cut the crap. What's going on?" You asked him pointedly.
"Yeah. What's going on?" Jongho added.
"What do you mean?"
"We were sent to capture each other. Do you know anything about that?" You interrogated.
The look on your boss' face said it all. He was guilty as ever. Your jaw ticked in agitation as you glared at him.
"Spill." You demanded.
"Alright. I set this up."
"I told you it was your boss." Jongho spoke.
"This is not the time." You snapped, holding your hand up to stop Jongho.
"Business has been slow. I was bored. Can you blame me?"
"You're the one who was tipping me off." Jongho pointed.
"I was." He nodded, shamefully.
"Unbelievable." You scoffed in disbelief. "What did you expect to happen when one of us succeeded?"
"Come clean?" He shrugged.
Jongho shook his head. "This is ridiculous."
"I agree."
"It was just a bit of fun, Y/n."
"Fun? I ran after this guy for a week straight while you were playing your little game and having us chase after each other. You not only wasted my time but Jongho's as well." You shook your head in disappointment. "I quit."
"What?"
"I. Quit."

Before your boss could blubber out any more excuses, you left the room with Jongho following behind.
"I can't believe this." You muttered.
"Me either. What a waste of time."
"Well, I don't know what I'm gonna do now. I'm unemployed."
"You can always work with me." Jongho suggested.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"I said, you can always work with me." He repeated.
"Let me get this straight. We were pointing guns at each other less than an hour ago and now you're offering me a job?"
"Yeah." He shrugged. "You don't seem so bad. I could see myself working with you."
You huffed out a light chuckle. "You don't seem so bad either, Choi."
"So, is that a yes? We can go to my boss' headquarters right now. I guarantee you'll be hired on the spot."
"Yes." You accepted.
For the first time since meeting Jongho face-to-face, you saw him smile and it was actually kind of... cute. He was kind of cute.
"Well, Y/n. I guess we're going to be partners now, or coworkers at the very least."
"I guess so."
"How do you feel about that?" He asked.
"I don't mind it. To be honest, I'm kind of looking forward to it. What about you?"
"I feel the same."
