Chapter 41

Adriana's POV

"Hello, so I'm the new coach and luckily we still have time before the season for me to make you winners" he yelled

"Coach Marcus said the sport wasn't about winning"

"He's wrong it's all about making championships. That attitude is why I'm remaking all of you tryout for the team. I want to see if you're up to my standards"

"We didn't tryout our parents signed us up" another girl corrected like he cared

"This is a girls middle school team not preschool. All of you will tryout again"

"We're all the people interested in playing on the soccer team. What if none of us meet your standard" I asked

"Then I'll coach the boys team there are lots of boys interested in playing" he shrugged

"Whatever can we start your tryout instead of talking" Kelly our captain asked

"I want to know your name and what grade all of you are in"

Everyone went around saying their name and grade. All of them were in 6th grade instead of me

"I'm Adriana and I'm in 4th grade"

"This is a middle school team I'm afraid you'll have to wait 2 years to join"

"I'm not going anywhere because I'm on the team roster and have my jersey which suggests I'm not breaking any rules"

"Adriana is the only one who can play goalie besides Bridget but she likes defense better. So if you kick her off cause of her age we'll report you" Kelly defended

"She's not in 6th grade"

"I have a high iq I could be in any grade I want"

"You're too small to be goalie"

"My height has nothing to do with my ability to block goals. If you were a competent coach you'd know being goalie is less about height and more about positioning and quick thinking" I crossed my arms

"I don't need a player who can't follow directions" he said

"If I listen to you I won't even be on the team"

"Just let her prove to you she belongs" Ana another girl said

"Fine"

An hour and half later

"All of you girls are very qualified except for one of you" he looked at me

"We're going to split up into two teams. Both captains will choose their team. Kelly you go first"

"Adriana"

After teams were decided I went and grabbed my gloves

I went to my goalie box and felt right at home. This stupid Tryout was just him trying to prove I don't belong on the team. He made me do drills for every other position but goalie. He set me up to fail and I could already tell that if I were to stay on the team he'd make my life difficult.

I see Zara our best shooter running towards me full speed ready to shoot. I move up to give the illusion that I'm covering more of the goal. It also adds pressure to her so she shoots without aiming

It works and she shoots really early. It's a high ball so a can only tip it over the goal. At least I got to show off my really good jumps to coach Meany

It's a corner kick and Petra takes it. She has the best control of the ball

She kicks it center to Zara who's ready to shoot. I dive for the ball and lie on it to maintain possession. Unfortunately Zara was mid kick and I earned a nice kick to the ribs
