Chapter 4 - Friends

Start from the beginning

As we walked out of the class, we met the eyes of a surprised Jessica. Her eyes went from me to Edward and then to me again. She was waiting for Angela and I to go to the cafeteria together, as usual, which I completely forgot as I was talking to Edward. He had a way of keeping me captive whether it was with his beauty or his words.

"Hello Jessica." He greeted her politely, which surprised her even more.

"Hi." She only said.

Edward face's turned towards me. "I will leave you guys alone. See you later, Aiyanna." He said while walking away.

"Bon appétit !" I added which made him smirk as he looked back at me, before he was out of our sight.

When my eyes looked down at Jessica who was a few centimeters smaller than me, her expression went from a surprised one to a confused one, considering the frown that was visible on her face.

"That was...unexpected." She commented as she tried deciphering my face expression.

"Should we get going ?" I heard Angela ask us from behind me, as she came out of the class.

I nodded, and the three of us walked to the cafeteria. I didn't take Jessica's silence for granted. She probably wanted to sit around a table before asking me dozens of questions about what she just witnessed.

There were days where Jessica, Angela and I ate with Mike, Eric, Tyler and Lauren, and some where we sat together, just the three of us. Today was one of those days.

"So ? You and Edward huh ?" Jessica said with a smirk on her face, while eyeing Edward who was sitting with his family like usual.

"Don't start. It was only about our french class." I told her as I rolled my eyes.

Well, it wasn't only about French. We talked about the movies we liked and the ones we wanted to see the most at the movie theater, once they'd be out. Edward recommended some movies he thought I'd like based on the information I gave him.

Jessica lifted one of her eyebrows. "Are you really trying to make me believe that the smirk I saw, came after a boring conversation about how to say how are you, in French ?"

"Well, we already went past the greetings, but yeah exactly."

I shrugged at her and focused on my food.

"What are you going to do on your birthday ?" Angela intervened. I thanked her internally for changing the topic. She smiled at me when our eyes met, as she noticed how thankful I was.

"Nothing special. Probably going to the restaurant with my parents." I answered.

My birthday was on September 11th, which was in two days. We always celebrated birthdays. Sometimes with the whole family, or just the three of us. When we celebrated with the family, I never felt like being the center of attention. It was a time where everyone could reunite, laugh, dance and eat. I was only reminded that we were all reunited for a birthday when it was time to blow the candles.

"Around what time do your parents come home ?" Jessica asked me.

"9pm at most."

"Do you want to do something before ? Maybe we could go to Port Angeles."

"Yeah, why not ? I'll see when exactly my parents will come home first, and give you an answer tomorrow."

Both of them nodded. The best gift that could be given to me on that day, would be to not have biology, but I doubted the teacher would grant me that pleasure.

"Oh, and don't tell anyone Friday's my birthday." I added.

The worst case scenario would be the whole class singing the Happy Birthday song while I just sat there, not knowing how to react. How were you supposed to react when this happened ?

"What makes you think people don't already know ?" Jessica asked.

"Do you memorize everyone's birthday in this school or what ?"

"You don't seem to remember that Mike asked you when was your birthday, on your first day."

I frowned. "He did ?"

I didn't really pay attention to the questions I was asked when I let them get to know more about me. I just wanted to get this over with.

"You might as well expect something from him. I heard him talk about it with Eric."

"You're kidding right ? No !" I faked cry as I threw my head back.

It has only been two weeks since I've been here, he couldn't do something special. I wouldn't have if the roles had been reversed.

Jessica laughed at me. "Relax, I didn't hear anything." She reassured me. "I'm not saying he won't try anything though." Or not...

"You don't like Mike ?" Angela asked me.

"I do, but as a friend. But you guys have seen how insistent he is. You don't even need him to say it out loud, to know what he feels. It's too much for me." I answered in a sigh.

When I looked at Mike's table, I saw him staring at me and giving me a smile before looking away. I wanted to hide myself at how annoying this situation was.

"Oh my God, fix your face" Jessica laughed at me. I didn't realize the corner of my mouth twitched as I looked at Mike. "What if it would've been Edward Cullen instead of Mike ? Would you have taken it this way too ?"

I scoffed although it took me off guard. "First of all, I doubt Edward would've been that obvious. And second, I told you that I am not interested in being in a relationship. Whether it's with Mike, Edward or anyone else." I reminded her.

"Why are you so against relationships ? We're young, it's the perfect time to try it out."

" I'm not against it, it's just that...I don't know. I'm just too lazy to go into the unknown. I think it would drain me emotionally."

"You're already draining yourself by overthinking about it like this." Jessica commented.

"I know."

The bell rang again, and all students stood up to put their tray away and go to their next class.
