My eyes brimming with tears, I ran in the opposite direction of the house barefoot, not having enough time to put my sandals on. And besides, who runs in wedge heels?

I ran until I came up to a familiar house.

"Adam! Open up!" I yelled, banging on the door.

"Drama Queen? Is that you?"

"Yeah, it's me, now open the freaking door!" I shouted, ignoring his nickname for me.

He finally opened it, and I bolted in and shut the door.

"Woah. What's up with you?"

I bit my lip and looked away. "It's a long story."

Adam placed a soothing hand on my shoulder. "Are you okay, Melody?"

"I'm fine," I mumbled, sneezing.

"Well, we'd better get you warmed up then. Lucky for us, my parents are out until tomorrow with my sister for her violin concert."

I nodded.

"You go shower, I'll get some clothes for you."

"Thanks, nerd."

"You're welcome, drama queen."

---

I stepped out of the shower and dried off with a towel.

Adam John. We've been friends since we were toddlers, and he's a year older than me.

Unfortunately, he doesn't go to my school.

I pulled on the clothes that Adam had gotten for me and stepped outside.

"You okay now?" he asked, looking up from his game.

"Yeah, I'm fine."

We spent the rest of the night talking.

It was nice to be able to spend time with Adam. Since school started, we'd both been so busy. Telling him all the garbage in my life was something I'd needed after such a stressful week.

Well, at least I knew there was someone still on my side.

the fact that irl adam and i don't talk to each other anymoree-- 🫢
