*Dan's pov*
I woke up first. The soft light flowed through the car windows, and shimmered on the light layer of rain drops. I didn't remember it raining last night, but I didn't wake up much either which was understandable. It was hard to wake up tangled in Phil's arms. Phil was still sleeping, he had woken up once during the night to go to the bathroom.
'Dan I need to pee' he mumbled sleepily.
'Well...um, just go in a bush' I yawned.
'Ughhh' He moaned, next to me. 'Come with me'
'Are you serious?'
'Yes'
'Phil'
'Dan'
'You're so annoying'
'Shut up'
I ended up doing it anyway, Phil went behind the bush while I stood sleepily by the car. It was probably 3am by then, Phil ran back into the car and dived under the sheets, I asked him why he needed me to come with him so bad, he told me that we'd have all the time in the world to be away from each other, I shut up after that. We went back to sleep in each others arms, and I realized this was the last night I could reach for him and he'd be there.
It was now around 7am, I knew that because it was flashing on the car radio. Phil was happily sleeping by my side, it felt good to know he wasn't awoken but any nightmares. I leaned up on my elbows and stretched out, looking down at Phil. Watching him sleep was one of those rare privileges. I watched as his eyelids gently fluttered open, and a sleepy smile formed on his face.
'Good morning' I giggled, kneeling above him.
'Morning' He laughed while stretching.
I leaned down and kissed him on the lips, they tasted like morning breath, I didn't care at all. Phil leaned up on his elbows.
'Ow! ow...ow' He whined.
'What?! What's wrong?' I asked hesitantly.
'Knee' Phil replied, I had almost forgot about his knee.
'You need to take your antibiotics' I sighed, reaching into the glove box at the front of the car to get his tablets. Phil took them from my hand and swallowed one, dry, without water.
'How can you do that without water?' I asked, in shock.
Phil shrugged, shaking his head. 'It's just another reason for you to worry'
'What do you mean?'
'There was a time where I took pills instead of cutting' He mumbled. 'It didn't last long'
'Phil, I-I'm sorry' I whispered.
He was right. It was another reason for me to worry, but I guess it was better he told me than to keep it to himself. Although, sometimes I wish there wasn't so many things to worry about between us...Sometimes I wish this could've been less painful.
'It's fine, you didn't know' He said, kissing me on the cheek. 'Anyway...Where are we going?'
He smiled, immediately changing the tone.
'Well, we're going to drive back into town and...' I trailed off. 'Suprise'
'Is there food involved?' Phil grinned. 'I'm starving'
'Maybe' I laughed. 'Help me put the seats back up?'
'Sure' Phil nodded. 'But we might want to get dressed first'
Phil and I put our clothes on, and both got out of the car, the cold winter morning air hit us immediately, and I squinted my eyes as I saw that the sun was already high in the sky. My heart sunk , and I felt a lump form in my throat, This was our last day. Phil was busily setting the chairs down on the other side of the car, he didn't see my happy expression morph into a face trying to hold back tears.
'Dan?' Phil said, while walking over to my side. 'Dan'
He saw my expression and immediately pulled me into his arms when I began to cry.
'I-I'm s-sorry, it's just-
'Dan...I was expecting tears since I woke up...it's okay to cry, don't hold it in' He reassured. 'Are you okay to drive?'
'Y-yes' I stuttered, as I pulled out of his embrace.
Phil led me over to my seat, before he walked over to his side. I started the car and we drove out of our little part of the world. The drive back home was beautiful, the roads were as empty as they were last night, and the forest part looked completely different in the day time. Phil's smiled widened when he saw the fair. We drove past the cafe, and down another road. I stopped the car when I saw we had reached our destination.
'That park?' Phil questioned.
'We're going on a picnic' I smiled, before leaning into the back seat to get the picnic basket. 'I know it's kind of cheesy but I-
Before I could say anything else Phil threw his arms around me and attached our lips.
'I didn't think I'd ever get a chance to have a picnic with you...It's perfect' He whispered, after pulled his head back so it was just inches away from mine.
I didn't say anything, I just smiled.
We walked into the park, hands clasped together. I held the picnic basket and Phil held the blanket. Unlike the field, the sky was quite grey at the park, so obviously there weren't many people there. Which was good. I didn't want many people anywhere near us, I just wanted Phil, and only Phil for as long as I was able to have him.
I didn't pack much food, just what was in the fridge. A few sandwiches, pre-made, a bottle of orange juice, some bananas and one cookie, as well as an ice pack because I didn't want it to get warm and gross.
Phil spread out the blanket near two trees, far away from anyone else who was there. I set down the picnic basket and laughed as Phil began rumaging through it.
'Dibs the cookie' He grinned pulling it out.
'I thought we could be cute and share it' I said raising an eyebrow at him.
'Okay well...okay' He said begrudgingly splitting the cookie in two and handing me a piece as a I sat down.
We ate the cookie and then took on our sandwiches. We spoke about how Phil never went to the park as a kid, and how I was taken against my will every second day. Phil got distracts by the ducks at one point...I hoped that whatever home he went to, they'd have pets.
'We'll drive back to my place after this because you need to call the adoption people and find out when and where they re picking you up...I-I also want to talk to them' I murmured, keeping my head down.
'Why?' He asked quietly.
'Phil...They said I couldn't even call you...surely...surely at least, once a week maybe, I could call you...Just to see if you're okay' I croaked. 'I know it might make this even harder but-
'It's a great idea' He interrupted, I looked up at him and his head was down as well.
I realized the tone had become serious again, I didn't want it to be this way. So I decided I'd have some fun.
'Phil?'
'Yeah' He looked up.
I didn't say anything, I just stared intently into his eyes, keeping a straight face.
'Um...Dan?' He questioned raising an eyebrow.
After a while he just gave up and stared back, mimicking my serious face. We sat there like that, trying not to smile for a while, until we both burst out laughing simultaneously. Phil covered his face when he laughed, so I reached over and pulled his hands away from his face.
'You have a wonderful smile, don't cover it' I whispered.
'Sorry I'm just not used to it...I never really smiled before you found me' He blushed.
