A/N - This part of the story takes place before you become the first champion of Alola. It still doesn't follow the storyline of the game though.

There wasn't much for (y/n) to do since she was already exhausted from previous events. She had gone to a festival with her best friends Hau, Lillie, Sun, and Gladion where they had a blast. Then she took her alolan vulpix and midnight form lycanroc to route 1 so they could get some much needed fresh air. After a while, she headed home in hopes of finding something else for her and her pokémon to do. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything she had in mind to do.

"Hi mom! I'm home!" she announced as she and her pokémon walked through the door.

"Ok dear! You aren't too tired are you?" her mother asked without turning away from what she was doing.

"No. Why'd you ask?" (y/n) responded. The possibility of an errand lifted her spirits and she happily walked to where her mother stood in the kitchen near the sink.

"Well there was this thing that the professor needed and he wanted to know if you could get it for him but...if your too tired it can wait until tomorrow," her mother said.

"No no! I can do it mom. I'm not tired at all!" (y/n) immediately answered. Her mother's face started to show hints of worry.

"But it's getting kind of dark and it could be a little dangerous at night you know," her mother reasoned.

"Don't worry about me. I am 12 after all. I can handle myself and I have my pokémon with me. You did suggest that I go in the first place anyway," (y/n) countered.

"But..." was the only reply that her mother could give her. (Y/n) hated having her mother worry about her. It was bad on both of them.

"How about I get one of my friends to come with me. Will that be ok?" (y/n) reassured. Her mother seemed like she still didn't want (y/n) to leave but finally gave her consent. (Y/n) left the house with a simple bag that held her pokémon and a few useful items.

(Y/n) had no intention of actually finding someone to come along with her. She figured they wouldn't want to be bothered after all of the fun that they'd had at the festival. She was also pretty sure that Kukui would be able to keep her disobedience a secret.

Finally arriving at the lab after a few battles, (y/n) walked right in and told Kukui why she was there. He immediately gave her the package that she came to pick up but then told her that she would need to get the other item from the mall in Hau'oli city. (Y/n) agreed only thinking of the task as something else to do. She went straight towards her destination without even telling her mother of the second errand only after making Kukui promise not to tell her mother that she was out alone.

She was taking the route with the least amount of grass around since she wasn't too proficient in pokémon battling. As a matter of fact, she was one the main path and nowhere near the grass at all, so one can imagine how surprised she was when a wild pokémon appeared in front of her. Where this mysterious attacker came from she did not know, but what she did know was that its level was that of her two pokémon combined! Lycanroc being level 51 and vulpix being level 49.

All (y/n) could do was panic at first because there was no way that her pokémon could even come close to beating this mysterious pokémon. Then she snapped out of her shock and ran as fast as she could in the opposite direction. To her surprise, the pokémon flew after her. Its scarf like fur trailing slightly behind it.

(Y/n) got as far as route 1 with the pokémon still in pursuit. That was until it finally decided to launch an attack at her. Dark energy reverberated from the flying creature and would have hit her it her Lycanroc hadn't jumped from its pokéball to take the hit for her.

"Lycanroc, no!" she shriek as Lycanroc hit the ground. She put her pokémon back into its pokéball knowing that she could not outrun this pokémon.

It must sensed her attitude of defeat because it landed right in front of her and stared strait into her eyes. Its own blue eyes seemed to wish for her do die and she might have it it weren't for Gladion. The pokémon was about to used a different pokémon move to wipe her out, but Gladion tackled (y/n) to the ground just before the pokémon attacked.

"Gladion...?" she said. "What are you...why are you even...?" But Gladion had no intention of letting (y/n) finish her sentence.

He pulled her off of the ground quite forcefully and simply said, "Run." And run they did. The pokémon did not follow them this time. It lifted itself on its black and red wings of death and flew off in the opposite direction. Even with the pokémon gone, the two kept running until they made it to (y/n)'s house.

"You had one job, (y/n). All you had to do was get home safely, but you just had to put yourself in danger. Why must you make me worry so much, (y/n)?" Gladion said once he'd caught his breath.

"It's not my fault that it decided to attack me, Gladion. All I was doing was running a simple errand when it showed up put of nowhere," (y/n) retorted.

Gladion gave her a 'yes it was your fault look' and said, "You weren't supposed to be out here by yourself, remember." He quickly regretted saying anything once he'd realized what he'd said.

"How do you know about that? Were you following me?!" (y/n) said.

"What! Of course not! Well not at first, but it was for a perfectly legitimate reason. I don't have to explain anything to you anyway," Gladion said. (Y/n) glared at him.

"Ok fine, I was following the legendary pokémon, Yveltal. Mother told me stories of all different kinds of legendary pokémon, so when I saw it, I followed it to the pokémon research lab. Why it's here in Alola, I don't really know but it has a reason," Gladion admitted. (Y/n) didn't know what to say. Was that pokémon that had chased her really a legendary?

"A legendary huh? That still doesn't explain why you followed me. I'm not a legendary pokémon, Gladion." (y/n) said as she sat on the ground.

"You're legendary to me," Gladion muttered.

"I'm sorry, what was that, Gladion? I didn't quite hear you," (y/n) said thinking he'd said some kind of witty remark as usual.

"I said I never said you were a pokémon," Gladion quickly replied.

"Anyway, I know that you're  not supposed to be out here by yourself because I was eavesdropping on your conversation with Kukui. Your mother doesn't trust you out here on your own, right? I can help you with that." (Y/n) gave him a skeptical look and nodded for him to continue.

"You can become a pokémon trainer. If you get really strong, then your mother will have no choice but to trust you on your own. My mother trusts me, so I'm sure your mother will trust you as well," he reasoned. (Y/n) liked his explanation, but there was one problem.

"Gladion, I am a trainer. I have the vulpix and lycanroc that Kukui gave me!"  There was a temporary silence as Gladion stared at (y/n) with a 'you don't listen do you' look on his face.

"Your pokémon hardly listen to you in battle. I've seen it with my own eyes. They respect you as a friend, but not as a trainer. I'll give you one of the pokémon from Aether Paradise so you can start over. Don't worry. If you need any help progressing as a trainer just ask me." he said. It was the nicest thing he'd ever said to her, so she had no choice but to accept his offer.

"You would really do that even though you think I'm bothersome?" (y/n) asked him.

He scowled at her and said, "I didn't say all of that for nothing. Who told you that I thought you were bothersome anyway?" He was walking toward the steps of her house hoping that she would follow, but she stayed put with a bewildered look on her face.

"Um, you did, Gladion. You don't remember?"she said, slightly confused.

"Of course I do. I was just asking a simple question," he lied. He hoped that she wouldn't question him further and to his luck, she didn't.

Instead she said, "Oh crap! I forgot to get the other package from the mall in Hau'oli! Darn it, now I have to go all the way back just to get it," (y/n) said.

She was turning around to go when Gladion said, "Hey! (Y/n), do you want me to go with you since your mother worries about you enough already?" (Y/n) just shrugged and kept walking, leaving Gladion to catch up to her.

"You do know that this decision requires a lot of thought. You'll be away from home most of the time, and you will have to travel to the different islands of Alola if you want to pass all of the island trials," Gladion warned.

"Sounds fun to me. I've always wanted to travel. How do you know about all of that anyway. You told me that you've only ever been to this island and the Aether island that you call home?" (y/n) replied.

"I've been researching the island kahunas and the other islands for Hau. He's starting his journey in a few weeks. He was going to tell everyone tomorrow, so keep it a secret and act suprised when he does because I wasn't supposed to tell you that," he replied. (Y/n) just gave a 'hm' in response as she continued walking.

They walked in silence for a while and it remained that way for the remainder of the trip. It wasn't until (y/n) was home that she broke that silence by saying, "Thanks for saving me back there... it could have ended badly."
