[CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT]

"CAN'T WE TALK?" HISSED ODETTE.

"No, don't be weird," said Cassia.

"Good morning, Odette!" chirped Mei as she took her seat.

Odette smiled, "Good morning, Mei. How was your night?"

"Could've been better."

Odette watched as Mei grabbed a slice of bread and began to eat it.

"Would you like some jam?" she asked. Mei shook her head.

"Have you heard from your sister?" asked Odette as she picked at her porridge.

"Which sister?"

"Hua."

"No, not really. Hua's been busy. I have heard from Lynwood though! Rosie said her first word and Emery almost fell off the roof."

"Merlin's beard — is Emery alright?"

"Yes, of course. Lyn caught him just in time."

"How'd he even get up on the roof in the first place?"

"One can only wonder," said Mei, "Have you talked to Xia lately?"

"Yes, I have."

"Did she tell you about her little bookclub?"

"Yes."

"Did you join?"

"No."

"Oh good," sighed Mei, "I was worried. Xia assigns like ten huge books to read in a week."

"I hope that's an exaggeration."

"I wish."

Odette turned around to look at the Slytherin table. Regulus wasn't there.

"Has Regulus ate yet?" she asked.

Mei shrugged, "I don't really pay attention to him. Are you going to eat your porridge?"

"No. I'm not really hungry."

"I'll eat it, give it to me."

Odette pushed it towards her and reached for a slice of toast. She spread a thin layer of strawberry jam and ate it. She was about to dismiss herself when Xia approached them.

"Hey girls," she said as she plopped down beside Mei, "Everyone having a good morning?"

"I'm sleepy as hell and Odette has a lack of appetite, answer your question?" said Mei.

"My morning has been great, thanks Mei," said Odette.

"Odette, can you pass the jam?"

"Strawberry?"
