The rest of the day went on as normal, boring. I needed to get home so I can pick up Toby from school. But when I turned the ignition, the car wouldn't start.

Why does this stuff always happen to me?

I got out of my car and slammed the door in frustration. "Are you okay?" A familiar voice called out. My head turned to my left and I saw Mr. Tall Jock. I hesitated to talk to him. But maybe he can help me. I need to pick up Toby after all. "Yea, my car just won't start," I made sure to sound in distress.

"Let me take a look,"

As he lifted up the hood, I couldn't help but see his biceps. I guess he took of the letter-man and now he was in a plain white t-shirt with the jeans he had on before. His jawline flexed when he would look further into the hood of my car. What a cliché. He shut the hood. Why was he doing that? Wasn't he supposed to fix something?

"Imma be honest," The tall guy spoke. His jawline kept clenching. "I don't really know anything about cars... I just wanted a reason to come and talk to you."

"Well now what the hell am I supposed to do?" I freaked out. "I have to pick up my little brother from school." My eyes involuntarily started to water and the tall guy noticed.

"Hey I'm sorry I couldn't fix your car, but I can give you a ride to the school and bring you guys home."

"But my car!! It was my moms!! I need it to get to school!!" I began to freak out even more at the realization that if I don't have a car, I cant go anywhere; I cant escape from 'The Monster'.

He put his hands around my arms and caused me to flinch at his sudden movement.

"Don't ...don't touch me," my voice came out as a soft yell. The tall guy looked very concerned. Oh no, I need to calm down or people will get suspicious. A bunch of people were already looking at me; the quiet loner freak.

"Sorry," I coughed. "I have just had a bad day. I would love that ride."

He threw me a smirk that made me uncomfortable, but I ignored it.

"Follow me."

I followed him and we stopped at this silver jeep, with black accents. It was at least a foot off the ground. When he opened the door, a step slowly swung down. "Need a hand?" he scoffed at my amazement.

"I'm good." I said confidently and hopped into the passenger seat.

The whole ride was kind of awkward and Toby was really confused as to why we were in a random car with a random person. I don't blame him.

Before we got to close to the house, I made him drop us off at our neighborhood park. He was really confused; but if John saw him I would be dead meat.

The tall guy finally stopped at the park and flashed me a warm look. "I'm Ames,"

What a unique name. French; I'm pretty sure.

"I'm Charlie, thank you for the ride." I helped my brother out of the back seat and started walking home after I knew Ames had left.

We hesitantly stepped onto our front porch and took a big gulp. His car was home. "Okay, when we walk in I want to to run straight up the stairs and lock the door." He nodded.

After work is when John is most angry. Some days he comes home late, so I get some time to relax and clean the house to try and please him. But not today.

I opened the door and Toby did as I said. Tom was sitting on the couch with a bottle of vodka in his hands. He couldn't even look at me straight. "Where have you been little girl," He spit. "Its 20 minutes past the time you are supposed to be home. I need to let out some steam."

'The Monster' looked past my head and red filled his eyes. "WHERE THE FUCK IS YOUR MOMS CAR??"

The look on his face was inhuman, I don't know what my mom ever saw in him. Before I could run away; he caught my wrist and threw a punch to my face. "I knew I couldn't trust you with it." Another punch hit my face.

"That was the only thing left of your moms!!" His arm wrapped around my fragile neck and he pulled my back against his chest.

The grip his arm had on my neck began to tighten, causing my oxygen to cut off. "I'm sorry." I managed to mutter out.

"I'm so sick of you." He spit in my face, literally.

This whole time I didn't let out one single tear, I have to be stronger.

My instinct to survive kicks in and I pretend to slowly pass out. After a couple seconds, he finally lets go. His footsteps became quieter as he walked away.

I finally gasped uncontrollably and sprinted up the stairs as quiet as possible. "Toby let me it." I whisper.

The door unlocked and I shut the door behind me; locking it again. My little brother had tears in his eyes and all I wanted to do in that moment was give him a big hug and hold him in my arms; But we had to run, I can't live like this anymore. The longer I stayed in this house, the closer I came to dying.

I grabbed the two biggest backpacks and stuffed it with necessities. So...clothes, medicine from the bathroom in my room, and a hidden money stash worth $1000. It wont be enough but it is until I figure something out.

Unlocking the window to my bedroom, I threw all of our bags down and grabbed Toby's favorite blanket. "Charwie im scarwed." He cried and I handed him the blanket.

"Its going to be okay, you just have to trust me." I shushed him. I jumped out the window and landed on a higher part of the ground. "Okay Toby jump into my arms, I am going to catch you." He looked terrified. "Please?"
