‘I didn’t hurt nor kill her, child; not yet at least.’ He said with a smirk.
‘How do I know you’re not lying?’ I asked bitterly, choosing to tempt fate.
‘Oh how I knew you were going to say that,’ he said before turning from me the slightest. ‘You may come hither, my daughter.’ He said sarcastically.
I was in complete confusion as I watched Meghann emerge from the shadows and reluctantly and slowly approach the two of us. Her face was unreadable and her stance was stiff.
Meghann dragged a suitcase behind her, I realised.
‘What…’ I slowly questioned.
It looked like Meghann was about to respond before her stepfather gave her a hard and warning look. She instantly turned away and I saw a brief tightening of her lips.
‘You see? Alive, uninjured…for the time being,’ he said; forcing a smile.
My eyes were as wide as Frisbees, for all I knew. Why wasn’t Meghann running? Why was she choosing to stand by the man who had killed her mother and almost killed the both of us? Confusion was running throughout my body, tinted with fear, of course. The harsh reality of this situation overwhelmed me.
‘Meghann?’ I asked, not sure what else to say.
She immediately averted her gaze from me.
‘Meghann, say something,’ I pleaded.
But before Meghann had a chance to even consider what I said, her stepfather interrupted.
‘No, I think she would rather not. Now, I think we better be off, isn’t that right Meghann?’ he asked with a faked, lightly tone.
‘But, what-‘I tried to say before they got too far away.
Meghann’s stepfather then turned to me with a horrific look in his eyes.
‘Meghann and I will be off now, we will both be sure to leave you and this school alone forever and you will never have to worry about either of us again. But if you tell a single sole about any of this, I WILL come back here and drag you away. You will NEVER see the light of day again, is that clear?’ his voice prodded my comfort and intruded my personal space.
‘Meghann doesn’t want this. What did you threaten her with?’ I whispered in bravery.
His face hardened significantly before he took a deep breath and regained his control.
‘Oh really? Well I’ll be happy to put you in your place, Avery. You think you know everything, don’t you? Well, you don’t; you’re just some small, stubborn child. In fact, Meghann came to me. I gave her my location and I told her that if she was smart, she would come to me. She found me in a heartbeat and admitted she wanted to be away from this school, away from you. She knows where her place truly is, as stupid as she looks; the kid isn’t completely at a loss. No matter what you say or think now, Meghann is coming with me and we’re going far away from this place. But also, she’s coming with me on her own accord.’ His tone dared me to continue.
‘I may be a small, stubborn child, but I, too, am not stupid. Meghann wouldn’t want this, she doesn’t want this. I’m not letting you leave with her, and there is no chance that I won’t be telling anyone. The only way to truly silence me will be to kill me. But you’re not going to do that, are you? There’s something stopping you, there’s a reason you’re not going to just kill Meghann and I here now. But what I can’t figure out is what the reasons are. Is it because you know that after killing us, there will be no chance you will be able to get away from this? Is it because you know that too many people care about us and will notice our absence? I mean, Meghann hasn’t been gone for more than an hour and already there are many people running around the school in panic. You’re a smart but psychotic man, you’re not stupid enough to pull out your gun and kill us both here now.’ I concluded in complete realisation that he just may do that, but I tried to deny the doubt within me.
‘Shut up and don’t tell me what to do or what not to do!’ he yelled before throwing Meghann to the ground and snatching his gun from inside his coat before pointing it right at me. I noted how shaky his hand was and I believe he realised that too. His gun then suddenly was pointed at a terrified Meghann on the ground, gun still shaking.
He didn’t know who to focus on so his gun went back and forward between the two of us.
I didn’t let my mind process the situation at hand. If I did, I would be a sobbing mess on the ground. I couldn’t let myself be in that position though, or we would both be dead.
‘You…you don’t think I’m not going to just shoot the both of you here, now? I will! Don’t underestimate me, child.’ He spat as his thumb pulled down on the Hammer and made a clicking noise. He then steadied his arm, ready to pull the trigger. I inhaled sharply, closing my eyes tightly, ready for the blunt impact of the bullet.
I then heard a gun go off as I shuttered to myself. But I felt no pain.
I opened my eyes, checking to make sure that Meghann was alright. But I was met with an unexpected sight.
Meghann’s step father was crumpled on the ground with blood escaping his right leg. His arms were wrapped around his leg as he held onto it for dear life. Also, his face held nothing but pain.
I ignored the rest of the scenery as I instantly ran to Meghann. I threw myself at her as we held onto each other.
‘Girls, are you okay?’ a voice asked from above.
I turned my head upright and was met with a familiar face.
‘Leon,’ I whispered before passing out.
